I’m not managing to post much at the moment-busy times with pending house move/health/work etc. all good, just all consuming! Anyway, I’ve recently been given a huge lot of vintage magazines from the 60s/70s/80s which I am loving flicking through. There’s Nova, Queen, Viva, the odd Tatler, Studio Collections, Oz, & The Lady amongst others. I’m not sure when I’ll be ready to move them on-so many problem pages to read and articles of life back then. Glorious! Anne Larsen, 1960s fashion model, shown waiting for a No. 11 bus outside the Classic Cinema in Chelsea. The fashion story was published over five images, including the back cover in the 19 January 1960 Queen magazine issue. Larsen is wearing a cream, black and brown gingham checked coat by Berg of Mayfair with a checked umbrella from Dickins and Jones. Parkinson worked with Larsen on several notable shoots including one in Blackpool with donkeys; and another learning how to dance the Madison with pop star Adam Faith. Anne Larsen, 1960s fashion model represented by the Eileen Ford Agency. Parkinson had good relations with the agency and recommended models for them. In return, he received notifications of new models they signed, who he would use for his shoots. Here, Larsen was photographed for the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, who represented many world-famous accounts, and were the first to give Parkinson some of his early commissions. Image has become known as #NewYorkNewYork and has sold as a highly successful poster and now available in a print edition of 21. The Bridge image shows two friends living in same apartment block as Parkinson in New York, namely #RobinMiller who wrote the book for the Musical #DamesAtSea and on the right #PippaDiggle who was asked to pose in her lunch hour! And run accross The plan was to take several images at 6 locations in NYC but bad rainfall that day curtailed the shoot . A full interview with Diggle was published by #CharlotteCripps when it was published to tie in with a Parkinson exhibition staged by #ElizabethSmith at the #NationalTheatre as one of 87 works shown entitled Lifework : Norman Parkinson’ Century of Style to mark the centenary of Parkinson’s birth in April 2013. Shhh, keep the noise down! Tune out on World Sleep Day. Queen magazine cover photographed in Sloane Street by Norman Parkinson, and bedding advertorial shot by John Cowan. Both Cowan and Parkinson also worked for Vogue, and Parkinson was the Associate Editor of Queen for a few years in the early 60s whilst on a hiatus from Vogue. This issue is designed by Mark Boxer and there is a fantastic multi-page series of ads for The London Bedding Centre company with models shot all over iconic London location by Cowan in the style of Parkinson's cover image. One of the examples of an advert being used as a cover image. Really unusual and ground breaking for its time. Locations for the bed include Eros in Piccidilly Circus, Sloane and Regent Streets, and the Coliseum Theatre. There is an early Susannah York portrait, aged 19, inside by Cecil Beaton. The great composer Leonard Bernstein is featured inside in an article photographed by perhaps the greatest documentary photographer of them all Henri Cartier-Bresson. This is the second in a series entitled 'A touch of Greatness' photographed by Bresson and the intimate images of Bernstein at work and with his family are wonderful. 6 pages Fenella Fielding demonstrates 'The last word on slimming exercises' by Bob Gill. He was working with editor Beatrix Miller who was about to move to British Vogue and so from 1965 Parks rejoined the magazine for which he continued until 1978 as well as continuing to work for Us Vogue with Diana Vreeland up until 1971 when she left that magazine . Jean Shrimpton born in November 1942 began her fashion and modelling career in 1960 at 18 after a course at the Lucie Clayton Charm School and became David Bailey’s muse and partner from 1960-4. Parkinson shot at least four fashion stories with Shrimpton for #Queenmagazine as well as many individual images and advertising work. These rare images, seen above , are sadly not in the #NormanParkinsonArchive but are copies from this rare issue which also include ls his 4 Eligible British Batchelors portfolio shown in adjoining post .
