Chocolate poisoning is particularly common at this time of year, especially with the large amounts of Easter eggs that may be around your home. Itโs essential to take proactive steps to ensure your dogโs safety around chocolate: 1๏ธโฃ Keep all chocolate out of reach: Make sure that all chocolate products are securely stored in places where your dog cannot access them. 2๏ธโฃ Avoid involving your dog in Easter egg hunts. Keep your dog away from the hunt area and thoroughly check that all chocolate eggs have been found. 3๏ธโฃ Resist the temptation to share chocolate with your dog: Despite their pleading eyes, refrain from feeding your dog any chocolate, as it can be harmful to their health. 4๏ธโฃ Consider homemade dog treats: Treat your dog to homemade treats using safe ingredients. Dogs with chocolate poisoning may initially be sick, have stomach pain or an upset stomach. If enough chocolate is eaten then the effects can be severe or even fatal. Additionally, be mindful of chocolate foil wrappers, as they can cause obstructions if ingested. * EXERCISE LEVELS FOR YOUNG DOGS * It is hugely important that we don't over-exercise young dogs while they are still growing and developing. Their growth plates at each joint are still closing throughout a dog's growth period. For this reason, we advise sticking to the '5-minute' exercise rule for young dogs. This means that a dog should get 5 minutes of exercise for each month of their age whilst they are still developing. Two walks a day at this limit is deemed acceptable. For small to medium breeds, the majority of their growing is complete by around a year of age, however there is still plenty going on behind the scenes! As you can see from this diagram, different growth plates close at different times - the final growth plates only closing at 15 - 16.5 months. I regularly see bad exercise patterns with people that have puppies. Whilst they are young, people are pretty good with sticking to the exercise rules, but as the puppy grows they forget that their skeletal structure is still under-developed! People with 7 - 12 month puppies are regularly over-exercising their dogs. They may not look like a small puppy anymore, but they are still very vulnerable to joint pressure. The same applies for ball throwing and allowing your dog to run up and down stairs. Both are very bad for your puppy, putting a lot of unwanted stress on their joints. Steep hill walking is also a no-no whilst they are young. Yes, 16 months seems like a long time to wait before being able to lift the lid on your puppy's exercise restriction, but believe me, it's a much better alternative than being told a few years down the line that your dog has developed elbow/hip dysplasia or arthritis. And the guidelines in the diagram are just an average - for large and giant breeds, the growth plates will take even longer to close, so the exercise restriction needs to remain in place for a longer period of time than specified here. Look after your pup's joints - they only have one set! We are thrilled to announce that little Az, the adorable baby Dalmatian, was back out on a walk and training session with our wonderful trainer Jamie today! It's always a joy to see Az making progress and growing in confidence as he learns and explores the world around him. Previously we noticed that Az appears to be less confident with a male walking him, so we are taking it slow and not pressuring obedience too much. Instead, we are focusing on lead manners and building his confidence with Jamie by setting him one simple, easy task that he can complete. It's all about building him up so that he can learn and build confidence at the same time. His sessions with Jamie are shorter than with Sam or Codie our female trainers to ensure Az is not overwhelmed during the session It's important to remember that puppy stages like this are not easy. They require patience, understanding, and consistent effort from both the pup and the owner. We are incredibly proud of Az's owner for their hard work and dedication to helping Az become the best he can be. We want to thank Jamie for his expertise and patience in working with Az. His commitment to Az's growth and development is truly commendable. We encourage all puppy owners to be patient and understanding with their furry companions, especially during the challenging and formative puppy stages.
