Say hello to our new family member Cash! Cash was rescued by A Dog on Prison Turf which is a program at the Madison Correctional Facility in Indiana that gives animals at risk of being euthanized the chance to be adopted. It’s a second chance for pets and offenders. Many of the inmates have been certified as dog trainers. The offenders and the animals had each been facing isolation and rejection, and are now giving each other hope. About 40 women participate in the program, which began a few years ago. They’re matched with an animal who then lives with them in their bunks. The inmates are responsible for their care, including feeding, grooming, housebreaking and obedience training. Cash is a 1.5 year old Yorkie/Sheltie mix who was found as an abandoned stray. We are so grateful to his inmate trainer and this program that rescued him. Isn’t this a wonderful story of redemption? We had an absolutely fantastic day at HMP Belmarsh, concluding the program ran over the past few weeks. It was a truly inspirational, insightful, and motivational experience. We were fortunate enough to hear from musical geniuses like Teshay Makeda @teshaymakeda_ and Lurine Cato MBE @lurinecato who absolutely blew us away with their performances. Not to mention incredibly powerful lyrics from @2badda and hearing from serial entrepreneur @shaun_sookoo and @esta_rae1 @miss__esta_rae and listening to an amazing rendition by @rogerrochemont we also heard from new member to the team @jab_derouchee we also have to publicly thank #GoldenFlakes Pattie’s a major JA Pattie supplier for sponsoring free Pattie’s for the men one man said he hasn’t had a patty in five years and it was so special for them all who came to the intervention. We were just happy that we could be a light in the darkness. Rewind 25 years, and for most men, their parenting role was that of bread winner and disciplinarian, like their father before them, and so on. Mark Perlman, the author and founder of the Nurturing Fathers Program saw an opportunity to change that dynamic and shared this story recently on @thehustlerfiles Podcast with Lisa Reilly (@lisagreilly16 ), along with his son Corey Perlman (@coreyperlmanspeaks ) Comment ‘PODLINK’ for a link to the show. “I started writing a program that would offer fathers a workbook guide, but as I wrote the program, I felt as if the subject matter was coming through me, rather than from me.” The Nurturing Fathers Program, soon to be passed on to one of Mark’s sons, Corey, is facilitated through counseling agencies, the military, social work curriculums and behind the walls of minimum, medium or maximum prisons, across the United States. Every part of today has been incredible. This morning, a 2019 In-Prison Program (IPP) graduate stopped by our office unexpectedly! We hadn't seen him in a while since he'd returned home and was doing well. The graduate bumped into a friend of his while passing on the street and mentioned his readiness to start his own small business. Currently, he has a great job working nights, his family is thriving, and he has a new baby due next week. His friend suggested looking into the RISE Business Academy since he had recently graduated from it and launched his own business! Neither of them knew they were both part of the "RISE Family." So, first thing this morning, the IPP grad visited the office, gathering all the information he needed to take his next step. He also left with a RISE onesie for the new baby on the way. 😉 This exemplifies RISE at work. This is the impact of your support. When we started collecting the data point in 2020, it was discovered that 88% of RISE participants had experienced at least one family member being incarcerated during their lifetime. 100 Fathers and Counting 🎓The Children’s Trust @trust4kids and Hampshire County Jail and House of Correction have partnered for a number of years to offer the Nurturing Fathers program, helping hundreds of incarcerated fathers build parenting skills and strengthen their bonds with their children. The 13-week program provides guidance and counseling to fathers during their incarceration, and the expanded program provides an additional 2 weeks of transitional guidance at the Northampton Recovery Center for participants after they leave incarceration and return home to their families. Typically, our participants have the opportunity to say goodbye to their dogs and meet their foster or adopter at graduation. Unfortunately, Snowball needed extensive medical treatment and was unable to participate in graduation. We know how important it is for both ends of the leash to say goodbye so we arranged for Snowball to visit our office to spend time with Jeremiah. We are so proud of our graduates! Happy Reunion! Snowball, a graduate of our @philly_prisons_ @tastykake Class, was recently reunited with her incredible handler Jeremiah! Typically, our participants have the opportunity to say goodbye to their dogs and meet their foster or adopter at graduation. Unfortunately, Snowball needed extensive medical treatment and was unable to participate in graduation. We know how important it is for both ends of the leash to say goodbye so we arranged for Snowball to visit our office to spend time with Jeremiah. We are so proud of our graduates! What an incredible turnout! Despite the bitter cold, 35 volunteers stepped up to fill over 200 "Welcome Home" bags for our 2024 RISE program graduates and Justice Study participants returning to our community! In less than two hours, our dedicated RISE volunteers in Nebraska made it happen! This support is invaluable to us, saving us a huge effort as staff. A million thank you's to each and every one of you who lent a hand! Each "Welcome Home" bag, valued at over $100, contains essential personal care items like body wash, shampoo, laundry detergent, and towels. It's an amazing sight to witness - one of our current members-in-training, Manuel, connecting with Tony - a program alumnus who returned to share about his experiences with re-entry. While both initially connected over their IE roots, both were able to also share their common goal of helping others and giving back to their communities. As a Job Coach with @ceoworks, Tony shared how he's been able to do just that since being released from prison. When he was asked what the experience of returning to CMC was like for him, Tony explained: "Initially, there were mixed emotions that ranged from sadness, hope, and happiness. Once I made it to the circle and saw some familiar faces, I instantly felt a calmness; it brought back a comfortable feeling of connectedness that was created before, from the many shares in circles of the past." Thanks to Tony, along with other program alumni, who were willing to step into the complexities of this experience. Today marks 5 years since I embarked on a remarkable mission with the Art of Living and IAHV, in collaboration with the DCS Volunteers Unit. It’s been a journey of hope and healing, reaching out to the hearts and minds of 140 prisoners through our dedicated prison program. This path hasn’t been without its challenges, but every hiccup has been a step towards steady progress and deeper understanding. Our efforts may have been gradual, but their impact is undeniable and deeply fulfilling. Looking ahead to 2024, I am filled with determination and optimism. My goal is to reach at least 100 more prisoners in South Australia. This isn’t just a target; it’s a commitment to bring light and transformation where it’s most needed. A global movement that spans 85 countries and has touched over 1 million prisoners, I am reminded daily of the power of compassion and human resilience. Here’s to continuing this journey of change and hope, touching one life at a time.
