I feel like these two pictures deserved their own post because the colors are just so vibrant! Kootenai and Kaniksu, the National Forest brothers 🥰. Kaniksu weighed in at almost 30 grams heavier than his brother, and you can clearly see how his face looks more mature at this point. You can still see the baby fuzz on Kootenai’s head whereas Kaniksu has shed all his. Kootenai is just a smidge behind his brother as far as maturing, but both boys are doing incredibly well! All four boys, the Fancy brothers and the NF brothers, get along splendidly, so they share free-roams together now. They aren’t all bunking together quite yet because the littles still have some growing to do before I feel comfortable leaving them in the ‘Eiffel Tower.’ Otherwise, they are completely ready to live together. Four teenage boy rats in my home is quite the chaos, but they’re always a great time. And the two girlies, Opal and Pearl, are also doing incredibly well. The National Forest boys and I went out on a little adventure this afternoon. We took advantage of the 70°F weather that has graced us for the first time this year. And we managed to get some cute flower pictures! Although, I think I was more impressed than they were 😅. Having been raised with me from such a young age, these two boys are far braver (less fearful overall) than my big boys. This little girl is so absolutely stunningly gorgeous. It’s very unfortunate that the genes for this coat pattern are likely linked to genetic defects and abnormalities (as is evident even in this girl with her impaired vision and runty stature). But holy cow, is she not absolutely stunning?! She has only been with me for one week and her coloring is already changing, with her spots becoming far more evident! 🥰 Fun fact, a Spotted Tabby’s dorsal stripe tells you what their base coat color is and what color their spots will darken/lighten to. Opal’s dorsal stripe is black, so her spots will darken! A Spotted Tabby can actually have any color as their base. Some have such light coats that you almost can’t make out the spots (like a champagne). I’m actually starting to wonder of Pearl is also a Spotted Tabby because I think she has a dark mask and a dorsal stripe 😳. That would be wild! . . We entered our very first show – #ratapalooza2024 in Olympia, Washington (actually in Lacey) on April 18th! Jackson will be showing as a show rat (I’m keeping him unaltered as a potential breeder in the future) and Pearl will be showing as a show rat in the kitten category. Kaniksu and Kootenai will be showing in pet, currently registered for ‘Best Matched Pair,’ but I’ll probably show Kootenai in a few others that match his sweet temperament. Opal will be showing in the pet under ‘Funkiest Markings,’ ‘Cutest Kitten,’ and ‘Disabled Pet.’ Brody is the only one not showing, but he’s registered as a companion, since the brothers have never been separated. So, it’ll be all six ratties and I traveling across the state in a couple weeks! It should be a great time! We’ll stay overnight on Friday and drive back after the show on Saturday. I grew up training and showing dogs and horses, and even showed my rabbits in 4H, but I’ve never shown rats, so this is exciting and new! Hoping this will be the start of our future rattery. . . *An Opal focused post* My perfect, beautiful, special little girl. Opal joined our mischief yesterday (April 28, 2024). Her and her sister are the first girls to come into my care, but I just couldn’t stop thinking about this special little girl. When I first met Opal about a week ago, I noticed that something was different seeming with one of her eyes. It turns out that both of her eyes are slightly smaller than usual, and her right eye is even smaller. There’s also a slight blue tint in the corners, possibly cataracts in the early stages, but also possibly third eyelid overlap that she might grow out of. Her eyes are so tiny right now that it’s hard to tell. I suspect some lack of vision in the tiny eye (or possibly both), but she seems to have great senses of her surroundings and she’s one bold little girl! She’s already anxious to explore – but the girls are on quarantine so no major explorations yet. After the mention of this from a rattie friend, @rattie_asylum_stud, I did some further research and it appears that she likely has a condition known as microphthalmia – a maternally linked mutation during embryonic development resulting in smaller, recessed eyes and a “squinting” appearance, and can be associated with cataract development, retinal dysplasia, and vision impairment. With all that being said, she’s a healthy little bugger with lots of spirit and sweetness to boot 😁💕 And as always, I feel lucky to have her. . . Please welcome our two newest additions – Little Opal and Onyx. I met Opal almost a week ago and it was love from first sight. It seemed she had something different with her eyes and upon closer inspection by her caregiver, they noticed she has a small eye. Her right eye is smaller than her left. She also a bit “runtier” than her sisters. After seeing her several more times over the week, I couldn’t stop myself from bringing her home today when no one had scooped her up yet. So, here she is, in all her precious, special, and beautiful glory. I picked out one of her littermates for moral support (since my home is suppooooosed to be a bölls only home, so girls have to be housed separately until they’re old enough to be spayed). Onyx is her Berkshire (?) littermate. She’s a spunky girl, but she’s also a good sister and is already offering comfort grooms to Opal. Did you know something so little could be so compassionate and provide a human with such unconditional love?! And yes, rats DO show compassion. It’s quite impressive and endearing. These two babies, having come into my life at three weeks of age right after I lost Wyatt, have made such a drastic impact on my life. Having been taken from their own mother a bit too young, they looked to me for a great deal of comfort and guidance, and since then we have been bonded tighter than oxyhemoglobin (the oxygen in our blood)! These are the National Forest Brothers, Kootenai and Kaniksu, named after my two favorite national forests in the Idaho Panhandle. And yes, I have a mischief of four ratties now, and I couldn’t be happier. *Had to repost. Noticed I shared two front pics of Kaniksu and none of Kootenai (the belly freckle was missing!). Oops* . Five weeks old! My goodness! They’ve been in my life for two weeks and they have grown SO MUCH! They are such healthy, happy little boys, and just the loves of my life (don’t worry, I still love Jackson and Brody just as much!). I’m so proud of these little guys for how well they are doing. Simply phenomenal. As always, I’d like to credit @spicerack_rats for supporting me and these little guys through some hard times and @little_heroes_rattery for supplying such a wonderfully nutritious Shunamite diet mix that definitely fostered proper growth in these little guys. Also @oxbowanimalhealth for creating a solid young rat diet and their Critical Care Omnivore supplement. It really takes a community to raise little ones. . Pictured first is Kaniksu, then Kootenai. They’re getting a little harder for the average eye to tell them apart. Kaniksu’s spine stripe has filled in a bit and no longer stands out as a blob. But some permanent tells are the break Kootenai has in his hood from his belly to his chin, the freckle on his belly, and the jagged edges of his hood. Kaniksu has smooth edges and no break. Been a busy day. Another test litter has been welcomed into the world. Apen gave birth the 8 healthy pups this morning. We were able to get a few pictures before she decided enough was enough. *Test litters are done to help better the genetics, health and temperaments of the rats we breed. No only are we testing the doe to see how she'll react to us handling her babies. We also test the babies to see how they progress to hopefully become pet quality babies. Bous are of the age! That means that get to move out of mom's place with uncle Rebel. These boys are 4.5 weeks old weaned. The reason we remove the boys from mom so early is that rats can get pregnant super early. As early as 5 and 6 weeks old. So to ensure the males still get to be with an older mentor we place them with dad or another docile male we may have available. We have been doing this method since day one of breeding and it has never done us wrong. What an adventure we’ve had on our walk tonight. We rescued a doggy. She was wandering all on her own down in the creek. 2 teenage boys were door knocking the houses at the top of the creek to see if she lived there so mummy and I kept walking. There’s no way I would have walked down the hill. Well. 2 blocks later this same doggy is now walking on the road. That’s it, mummy said. We’re not leaving this doggy to get run over. So we sped up and were able to catch her. She had a collar but the only tag was our council tag. No tag with a phone number. Soooo. Mummy carried this little doggy (who stank really badly) about 5 blocks home where she dropped me off and drove the doggy to the vet. Great news. She was microchipped and the owner had reported her missing. Our good deed has been done for the day.
