We’ve had some beautiful bright & sunny days in the UK recently after a VERY looong, dull start to the year. The meadows are full of buttercups, daisies and other tiny little pink and mauve flowers that are just beautiful and uplifting to see. Working on this joyful quilt the last couple of weeks has felt uplifting too! Some fabric combinations just sing don’t they?! I can’t wait to show you the full shots of this adorable quilt!! Thank you so much for all the encouraging feedback on my #rubystarsocietymakers2024 projects!! 🫶🏼😘I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again - these Picture Book fabrics got me SO fired up with ideas!!!🔥⚡️💡 & I may have got carried away 🤦🏻♀️ This is a 6 player game of fabric bingo complete with caller cards and 6 sets of tokens to use to fill up your fabric bingo board as you match with the motif the caller shows. The ‘bingo boards’ have a strawberry tag to denote the matching tokens for that board, with matching fabric on the back of the boards. The cards and tokens all have Tarry Town fabric to coordinate. I had intended to make a tote bag to contain the full set also but time was against me when we had a big family event to attend - so that may get made later 😂🎉🌈 💕 Honest talk here y’all: I’m NOT very good at keeping things simple. My ADHD means that I tend to get lost going off on tangents and over complicating things by finding more and more ways to add to something I’m doing. So instead of ONE simple ‘make’ there are 4!! And each of the 4 is full of multiple aspects! I did the same at the end of my degree when we had to curate an exhibition and I just did waaayyyy too many things for my own good. Full disclosure: I used to get teased for being ‘Orla or nothing’ for my approach to tasks, which REALLY hurt and made me feel so misunderstood. Since I’ve learnt more about neurodivergence going through an ADHD diagnosis in my late 40s, I better understand why I take longer to do things, have racing thoughts and get easily distracted by new input as well as how I can get lost in hyper focus to the point of burn out. I’m still trying to find ways to navigate this and manage my approach to self employment & creative entrepreneurship without constantly feeling I’m on catch up. Note to us all. Imagine gifting this to a little loved one!!! Tiny fingers feeling the stitches and tracing the shapes of the numbers, then clumsily prodding the pictures of the flowers, making sounds and forming first words. I loved when my Meg was little and we shared her first books together. I loved watching her little brain soaking up information and seeing learning happen in real time. It was a real privilege as a teacher to see children learn, & especially lovely to have experienced this with a child of my own! This year I set myself the goal of being intentional with all of my creative work: both my surface design and my quilting. It is my mission now to ensure that what I put out into the world in meaningful and adds value. Whether it’s an educational resource to inspire development & spark joy; or an item to promote awe and wonder in the world and the beauty we have within it; or to pay it forward to society through enriching the lives of people who are living with the challenges of dementia or other cognitive impairment, like my sweet mum did. This project (one of 4 I’ve worked on) as one of the #rubystarmakers2024 really ticks all these boxes. I’m in love with these wee drawstring bags! 🩵💕🤩 Mind you, making drawstrings takes an unexpectedly looooong time! D’you ever sit down to undertake a sewing task that you *think* will be quick, only to find yourself still going hours later 😅🤪🤣 then other tasks are done in the blink of an eye that you thought would be harder work!! 🥳🏆🙌🏼 I guess you could easily substitute handmade drawstrings for twine or ribbon if you didn’t want to make your own. The ‘Matching Pairs’ panel from @kmelkight s upcoming Picture Book collection is gorgeous! 💕⭐️💖🤩 It comes in 3 colourways. A 42” x 24” piece gives a full repeat of all 56 different 3”x 3” squares, so there’s loads of possible combinations to choose from for creating your own matching pairs game!! Using them all, I’ve separated the motifs into 4 different sets of 14 pairs of motifs, each with a different coordinating fabric from the collection. I went for the exposed seams this time as I had 112 squares to sew. Meet the Erica Quilt Pattern! Yes, it's named after me and it felt so strange putting my own name on the pattern! I have been planning to use my name at some point and was just waiting for a pattern that felt right. Here are my reasons why this felt like the one. 🤩 The quilt has an overall design rather than a repeating block, similar to some of my. most popular patterns 🤩 The pattern is fat quarter friendly, which is my favorite precut 🤩 And it is scrap friendly! If you saw my previous post then you’ll know I was wondering what y’all think about exposed raw edges for little quilt sandwiches. Yesterday I made 72 mini quilted ‘player cards’ (for two different games) with the seams hidden and they look really great! Just a stitch around the edge and they’ll be complete 🌟💪 AND I also trialed sewing a little square with exposed seams, and d’you know what, I think it looks SUPER cute!! 💕☺️ I really like the texture and detail with the stitching plus the frayed edges will look cute too as these squares get played with and used over time. I’m relieved they look so sweet as I’ve a BIG stack of squares to sew to make these pieces into 4 sets of matching pairs. The Hero print ‘Memory Cards’ comes in 3 beautiful colour ways (tumeric shown here is my absolute fav!) and features 56 different motifs on 3” squares. The full repeat is 42” x 42” As soon as I saw it I was full of ideas for how these little squares could be used. Obviously a matching pairs game is in progress but also multiple other little games and tactile, interactive play ideas are coming to life in the little house of @diddyandmeg ATM 🩷 Here’s a sneak preview of a little stack of squares ready to turn out the right way. Really into mini quilts lately. I made this in one day. Something about those quick finish projects are just so satisfying 😊 This is my final #rubystarmakers project. I chose to do another dresden mini because they are my favorite. I originally had a blue elephant at the center but felt like it needed more contrast. I didn’t want him to feel left out so I added him on the back as a fun surprise. Thank you @rubystarsociety for including me in your initial run of this program, I loved being a part of it! I made something! I’ve started out 2024 very slowly, and I’m perfectly fine with that. I love sewing and creating, and my mind is usually busting with ideas and plans, but it’s also been really nice to step away for a few weeks and take a break. This is my last project as a Ruby Star Maker from 2023. I made so many friends and pushed myself to try new things through this opportunity. The design is inspired by a children’s board game and the whimsical Picture Book fabric collection by @kmelkight! There are 5 different blocks that make up this quilt: Curved Block, Straight Block, Start and End Block, as well as a Background Block. The finished throw size is around 50” x 60”, but can easily be sized up or down to fit your desired quilt size. It is an adventure of your choice!
