This year our goal for Menstrual Hygiene Day was to deliver 1,000 period kits across four underserved communities in Abuja. On Day 1 we spent some time with the students of JSS Gbessan educating them on menstrual health and hygiene as well as providing them with period kits containing pads and sanitary items. Prioritizing menstrual health education alongside improving access to menstrual products, is essential for ensuring an equitable future for our girls. In many parts of the world, menstruation has a stigma associated with it. Many women relate their period with feelings of shame, discomfort and secrecy due to a societal pressure not to talk about menstruation. Menstruation is still viewed as an uncomfortable, taboo topic even though a quarter of the world experiences it every month. These stigmas have been passed down through generations, intertwining themselves in the culture of these societies. Without proper education regarding menstruation, this stigma will continue, further fuelling period poverty. These misconceptions and harmful ideas surrounding menstruation that originated years and years ago will continue to remain prevalent in the conversation surrounding menstruation. These conceptions have been ingrained in society to the point where active learning and discussion about menstruation is required to reverse the stigma around periods and menstruation. Menstrual education affects health, understanding menstruation will help girls reach their healthiest potential. Knowing what to expect and how to navigate periods is empowering and will help prevent negative health outcomes or complications. Menstrual education will help girls know what is normal and abnormal about their periods which can help them and their doctors identify menstrual disorders earlier. Today Hope For A Better Tomorrow - HOBET joint the entire community to commemorate international menstrual hygiene day. this year's theme is "period friendly world", drawing inspiration from the global them, Hope for a better Tomorrow (HOBET) carefully calved its own "DIGNIFYING MENSTRUATION FOR AN INCREASE IN WORKFORCE", they aimed at educating young adolescent girls and young women on proper menstrual hygiene management and methods and distribution of menstrual kits in Miselele community along the Tiki Douala road. Among the inspiring activities and trainings sessions with participants, I was opportunes to be one of the presenters where I delivered a talk on Gender Based Violence (GBV) paying attention to what GBV is, the types of GBV,perpetrators, effects of GBV on the victims and I crowned my session with the measures we can take in order to end GBV like: starting a conversation with friends, family and community members about why GBV is unlawful and where survivors can get help, encourage survivors to speak up and not be ashamed and stay silent in instances of GBV, and engage men and boys to listen and support victims and bring perpetrators to book. At the end of the session,the 210 participants received menstrual kits(sanitary pads,hand towels, under wears, menstrual beads) and pledged to make use of the knowledge gained, pass it on to their peers in the community and beyond,watch their respective health and report cases of Gender Based Violence around them. Many women and girls around the world are held back from achieving their full potential due to poor menstrual hygiene caused by limited access to proper education, hygienic products, and sanitation infrastructure. This issue is worsened by persisting taboos and stigma surrounding menstruation which negatively impacts both health and social status. It seems so simple but sadly period products are not always available for people in their place of work. When Caroline provides period education workshops to businesses and organisations one of the first tips for a #periodfriendlyworld and work environment is to provide period products in toilets for employees. If period products are not available in your place of work open up the conversation with your employer about this. We also recommend to employers that they make sure there are a variety of products available so people have the choice of something they are comfortable using. It’s an unwritten rule that we always help out in an emergency, if we can. What about a woman living in a refugee camp, who has had to flee her home with nothing? Or a girl living in a rural community with no access to proper sanitary wares, Would you help her out too, if you could?
