Pendleton Barn in a Snow Storm – Capitol Reef National Park, Utah Horses stand next to the old Pendleton Barn (also known as the Gifford Barn) during a snow storm in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. I took this picture during our March 2021 trip. During the second to last night of the trip a snow storm moved in and blanketed the entire park with about 6 to 12 inches of snow. Everything in the park ground to a halt. Every view was completely transformed. I am really happy that we were able to be at the park for this experience. Love how the sunlight hitting the mountain in the BG blends into the similar tones of the barn roof. The nearby Fruita campground was one of our favorite places to stay during our 10 day trip exploring Utah National Parks.

The Fruita section of Capitol Reef is a small oasis of green amidst the towering red rocks. Fruita was once a Mormon settlement, and there are some cool old farm buildings and lush fruit orchards here. The Pendleton Barn, part of the Gifford Homestead, located in Capitol Reef National Park. The Gifford family lived here, in what was then the small town of Fruita, until 1969. The Fruita Historic District, as it is now known, is still home to orchards containing approximately 3,000 trees, including cherry, apricot, peach, nectarine, pear, apple, plum, mulberry, quince, almond, pecan, and walnut — including the orchards own unique strain, the tart Capitol Reef Red apple. The Gifford House today, in the background, is part museum, part store and sells what are rumored to be the best pies ever. Unfortunately, due to currently being closed, we won’t get a chance to see if that’s true. I’d really like to compare their apple pie to the famous (and delicious) Julian apple pie found in San Diego’s east county mountain town of Julian, CA. . There’s also a beautiful campground in this area, appropriately named Fruita Campground, that is the nicest national park campground we’ve ever seen. It’s dry camping, though there are restrooms; however, there’s no cell signal. (Also currently closed.) .
