Happy (belated) New Year!! 🎊🎉 I was lucky to start off 2024 at the beautiful @hyattzivacancun in Cancun, Mexico! This was my first time at an all inclusive in many years and the overall experience was fantastic, especially because I got to enjoy the food 🥰 The great thing about the Hyatt Ziva is how well they take food allergies. Your allergies are noted to your room, so when you check into a restaurant it’s noted and written down for the waiter. But the waiter will usually ask again, which was very reassuring. Aside from desserts and avoiding the buffet - all the food was delicious. We even had dinner @lorenzillos in the hotel zone and they were great as well. Allergies and working in the office *suck* Some co-workers are very understanding, while others clearly state their annoyance/frustration that they can’t just order whatever for the team. Thankfully, I now work on a very understanding team, with a few different allergies/restrictions. Something I’ve come to learn growing up with a peanut/nut allergy is that I cannot just walk into any ice cream/dessert place and expect to find something safe to eat; 99% of the time there isn’t something safe. It’s an unfortunate experience but something you learn to accept after many years. So when my friends walked into @gemmagelateria I thought the same and didn’t bother to ask if their gelato was safe. Finally sharing some of my favourite meals and restaurants from my Costa Rica trip earlier this year! Our itinerary was Liberia/Playa Hermosa ➡️ Arenal/La Fortuna ➡️ Monteverde ➡️ Tamarindo. I found most of the areas we visited, except for Tamarindo, had little to no dishes with peanuts/nuts on the menus, which made eating less stressful in a foreign country. Most of the meals we ate were some type of Casado variation (rice, meat, plantains, cheese, tortilla) and were delicious EVERY SINGLE TIME. When we weren’t eating out, we stayed at a few places with kitchens and we were able to make our own meals! All of the grocery items we bought had English ingredients. Tamarindo is a very tourist beach town and most of the restaurants had nuts on the menu, but every server was able to understand the severity of my allergy. Having an Spanish allergy card would have been very helpful. Not only is Costa Rica a beautiful place to travel but the food was great (and safe) as well. Peanut free but no longer almond free! 🥳 A little back story - during the pandemic with lots of time on my hands, I realized my last allergy test was in 2010 🤯. So I got a referral to a new allergist as I not only wanted to test for peanuts & tree nuts but also soy and peas which have been making me feel sick for a while. The allergy blood test ($500 and not covered by insurance 🙃) showed I still have an anaphylactic peanut allergy (no surprise lol), along with allergies to cashews, hazelnuts, shrimp, soy and peas (like I thought). The remaining tree nuts, I was most likely no longer allergic too 😱. This led to my first allergy challenge yesterday for almonds, which was successful! 🥹 It was about three hours in total, with a higher almond serving every 30 minutes. Nerve racking but exciting none the less!! And in a few weeks I will challenge pecans and walnuts. HAPPY TACO TUESDAY 🌮 Let’s tacobout allergies and chain restaurants … I have had some great and not so great allergy experiences at chain restaurants and @earlsrestaurant was one of the better! The waitress was great at ensuring I could and was comfortable eating the tacos (somethings were not made in house). Finding delicious and allergen safe food is always a win 😍 @aburitora is some of the best Japanese foods I’ve had. Although they don’t claim to be nut free, they do not cook with any nuts in the kitchen making their food safe enough for me to enjoy! (Except no dessert because it’s not made in house). The staff and manager were great when explaining what was safe or not. The Bread Essentials is *essential* (That’s all the creativity I have today) I have no idea how I discovered The Bread Essentials, but I’m so glad I did because they have an incredible selection of baked goods which are nut and gluten free along with a large selection of allergen safe pantry/grocery items!! In addition to the baked goods pictured, we also got picked up some frozen soup (big hit), jam and a very fluffy loaf of buckwheat bread. Please don’t judge me but I do in fact regularly drink instant coffee 😅 Sometimes I have no patience and a cup of instant coffee and milk (topped with caramel or biscoff spread) hits the spot!! I know coffee can be tricky for those with allergies due to shared/lines and “natural flavouring” which is why I’ve stuck with plain Nescafe coffee for a very long time. A dessert a day keeps the doctor away, did I get that right?? Sharing a delicious meal from the restaurant at the @elora_mill that I visited a few weeks ago. I ordered the seared tuna salad as a main and a DELICIOUS crab apple mille-feuille for dessert. There were a few other nuts on the menu but the waiter/kitchen made note of my allergy and didn’t see any concerns for the dishes I ordered. As my account slowly becomes *peanut free never caffeine free* I want to share more of my fav at home coffee products! I don’t use traditional syrups to flavour my coffee, mainly because I don’t enjoy super artificial tasting flavours. I love using @lalichee.co to flavour most of my coffee/latte/caffeinated beverages. I usually stir in a spoonful (or two) into hot coffee/ espresso to sweeten and/or drizzle over the top of frothed milk! It’s also so great for topping pancakes and incorporating into desserts 😍 They have quite a few flavours and size options, along with not using any nuts in their products (but are not certified peanut/nut free). I discovered this brand at the One of a Kind show (@ooak_toronto) a few years ago and shortly after they started shipping to Ontario! (They are a Quebec based company). #peanutfreenotfunfree

I saw a biscoff recipe on my feed, I searched for more biscoff recipes, my explore feed keeps giving me biscoff recipes and I now own a jar a biscoff which I might eat by the spoonful 😅 Today recipes includes stirring a spoonful of biscoff spread into two espresso shots, frothed oatmilk and topped off with some melted spread. I know they are not peanut/nut free (they have nuts on the menu) but I always make my allergy aware. I have felt ok eating here because the salads are so good 😭. Took a little weekend trip to Montreal and had the most delicious brunch at @arthursmtl 🤩 I had the Latke Smorgasboard (scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, latke, challah and israeli salad) and split an order of pancakes (syrniki) with the table. I wish I could ship this to Toronto it was fantastic and worth the hype. (Pro-tip get there at 9 am to get a seat early) They don’t have any peanuts/nuts but they do serve Nutella.
