Living it up with the Isleys. That's all. (Addendum: Sandwiched between two of their most widely celebrated classics, it's no wonder that 1974's Live It Up often gets overlooked in the Isley Brothers' great '70s run. This is undoubtedly my personal favorite of their long and distinguished catalog. Sure it lacks an enduring anthem on the level of "Fight the Power," "That Lady," or their definitive cover of Seals & Crofts' "Summer Breeze." But it's where they fully cemented their rock-solid 3 + 3 direction for the rest of the '70s, melding funk and rock with the silkiest soul ballads known to man. It's every bit as sterling as anything they did during that period, highlighted by their masterful rendition of Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me," where they strip back some of the original's lovey dovey, soft rock vibe and turn it into a soulful lament. There's also one of their greatest rockers, "Midnight Sky," which Ernie Isley torches to the ground with his fiery, skyscrapping guitar solo. And if "Lover's Eve," "Brown Eyed Girl," and "Ain't I Been Good to You" aren't in your top 25 Isley Brothers slow jams, we can't even have a conversation.)
Rival Schools - United By Fate on ltd red vinyl Picked this up @firstpressvinyl yesterday and when we were chatting about this record we released it came out 23 years ago. Even though it feels like yesterday. I was baffled that some people had never heard ‘Used for Glue’ or heard of @rival_schools_nyc because they seem like such massive songs/record. Taylor Swift - The Tortured Poets Department on ‘ghosted white’ I think it’s great. Lyrically it’s much stronger than Midnights (which I loved). There’s focus here that midnights lacked a little. Musically its more of a low buzz, the production is mostly understated but some incredible sounds on here. Its tension and release throughout as songs build to crescendo. The one question it leaves me with, as most of the last lot of records he’s worked on, is how many more records can Jack Antanoff work on with the likes of Lorde, Lana and Taylor. That’s a massive footprint to leave on music. Vastly successful but is it time to look for new vistas. Especially with such individualistic musical titans. At The Drive-In - In / Casino / Out on ‘purple and green smoke’ RSD pressing. One of the best bands ever. This record is a much more raw and direct representation than Relationship of Command but it’s definitely a pre-cursor of what would come. A fantastic album in its own right. Cedrics lyrics are fantastic, they read like Burroughs cut and pasting his way through another paragraph, yet they all make sense. Tony’s drumming on this record is some of my favourite, I remember learning the whole record. It’s so totally him, he has such an unmistakable style. I’ve been stealing from him ever since. Paul is one of my all time favourite bass players. Omar and Jim’s guitar work is phenomenal, the tension between their approaches, melody and dissonance, is what makes it special. I always the title was meant to be about, you’re born the middle is a total gamble, roll the dice and see what you get, where you end up, then you die. Maybe that’s just me? Anyone else have theories? I’ve waited ages to get this record, the original and represses were just far too expensive so glad I woke up at 6am for this! Relationship of Command is next on the list..
