"I was your typical small town girl, I wanted to get out but couldn’t make a living. I was 2 years out of high school working a dead end job as a barista just trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted to do with my life. I was always my mom’s golden child; straight A student with 2 years of college already under my belt from an early start program, but I was burnt out. College didn’t really feel like it was an option at that time in my life, it felt too far out of reach because I didn’t know how I was going to pay for it. The general rule that people always say is “go to college to get a good job to make good money.” Well, that isn’t always the case. Mom and I had some really close friends who were operators out of the 701 Union and they were always talking about how the union was the way to go. Good pay, retirement, benefits. It looked like a pretty good way out of that little town, so we went to the 737 hall together and joined up. Now we didn’t know anything about how the union worked so we just sat and waited for months and next thing you know, I got a call out for civil work on the golden hills wind project. Wouldn’t you know it, that was when I fell in love with dirt work and realized this is what I wanted to do with my life." Local 737 has gained an incredible laborer. "I was a short order cook before joining the union. I was looking for something different, something more! I have a few friends in the operators union and with some encouragement I joined the 737 to better my future and learn new things. Small town living being what it is I took my daughter Laura Clark along with me for the experience. We’ll never look back!! I am the type of person that hates repetitive work. I’ve went through many jobs in my life because I can’t stand doing the same thing day after day. The boredom would eventually send me seeking something new and different. Since joining the union I have worked with many different kinds of people (some of which I will call friends) and learned so many different skills. I am currently learning all about grade control and GPS. Dirt work seems to be my home so GPS is where I want to be (though UTS is more accurate.) I have learned how to run several small pieces of equipment and can confidently grade a road, sidewalk, curb, or anything else that requires a nice flat surface. I know some about windmills and what it takes to put them in and am eager to some day learn about pipe laying as well." We're happy to see you flourishing out in the field! “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” (Psalm 116:15) We say "goodbye for now" to Bev Honey who, this last weekend, went to be with the Lord. Bev, together with her husband Noel, was one of the first couples who became followers of Jesus in the Joburg church. Throughout their lives, they were examples of great faith and love for God. They served the church in many different ways, especially in the North-west region, where they shared their lives, and love, with each family group they led. Their warmth and hospitality touched the hearts of many in and outside the church. Noel passed away in October last year, and Bev moved to England to be with her family. Both of them will never be forgotten and will hold a special place in our hearts. How do you react when life throws you a curveball? Do you find your strength in God? Ellen Mofomme is a single mother who became a follower of Jesus in 2000. A former nurse, her life changed drastically in 2013 when she became ill. She lost the majority of her functional abilities and became confined to a wheelchair. But she didn't allow her new disability to hold back her spiritual growth. She shares her story: "The disease left me in the wheelchair, but what I gained was my soul. When you're bedridden, there's not much left for you to do or to hide away from God. You are isolated most of the time. I began to have awesome quiet times with God, as I continued reading and praying for God to change my situation, or to heal me, so I could be like I was before the illness. But what I got was to come face-to-face with my Creator. I questioned who I was, and why God kept me alive. When I realised I couldn't answer those questions, I had no choice but to trust him. A life well-lived... What an encouraging memorial service and tribute to Aunty Edna, the oldest member of our church at 95. Those present paid tribute to her love for colour by wearing something bright. They shared how she loved serving the poor and those in need, her love for God (her favourite scripture was Psalm 91), her love for her husband, Tommy, who she outlived by 13 years, and her love for God's family, making sure she was at services and bringing friends to church whenever she could.
