OMG check out the newest addition to the marina!! 🦭 This little sweetheart was born a few days ago and has been hanging out in the marina while momma goes out and hunts during the day. I was told that often times the mother seals will give birth and use the marina like a "nursery", because it is a little safer for the pups here in the Bay, and the current is not as strong as down by the mouth of the ocean. Then when the pup is a little stronger, it can head out into the big water with momma. This little one was so young it was just starting to open its eyes 🥹 - and you could even see its umbilical cord still attached to its adorable little belly! And now for something completely different! Quick rundown: I reached the Sierra Nevada mountains on the PCT, decided I lacked the experience and will to trek across the heavy snow covering those peaks, and hopped up to the Oregon coast, where I'll be taking a short "break" to hike the 400 mile Oregon Coast Trail while the snow melts. More details: the snow levels in the central California mountain ranges are still high early in the season, and other sections of the trail are also covered (preventing an easy "flip" to another section). I had most of the gear, but none of the mountaineering and snow travel experience (traversing snowy Ontario sidewalks and watching YouTube videos doesn't count). I also wasn't feeling stoked about spending a month living and struggling through the snow - and after reading John Muir's description of the Sierra in the summer, realized I'd much rather see the alpine lakes and meadows in their full glory, rather than everything being a uniform, blinding white. Plus, maybe I was just a little burnt out on the PCT after all the desert sections. So, evaluating my options to wait for the snow to melt down, I landed on the OCT, since a full break from hiking didn't sound like a good idea (in too deep, now). It's an underappreciated trail, with temperate weather and refreshing views. More little towns on the way to grab a beer, but with more roads to walk, and less of the established trail culture of the PCT. Learning how to read tide charts and occasionally making the route up on the fly. I never got a picture with the owner! But damn- @northcoastpins was a happy accident. I initially booked a AirBNB that was in Rockaway Beach, OR instead of directly in Cannon Beach. So when I was driving through I came across this place- and man it brought me so much joy. I had a lot of medical stuff going on recently both mentally and physically. So when I walked in I immediately felt at home 💯. The owner was so beyond sweet and felt like a friend I needed in my life for a long time who was just really passionate about pinball. (low key I’m actually pretty good no lie 😉) There was all types of machines from really old to current! And it was super affordable! I’m hoping to actually go back this summer for a tournament they hold monthly! Highly recommend if you are in the area and want to visit something legitimately amazing- check this place out. It was genuinely the highlight of my trip! I’m super sorry I didn’t say by on the way out! I overly committed myself before my kids came back.
