The weather has graciously pushed me to make some coop decisions. These lovely chickens are Up for Discussion. Please message me via my farm page, it tracks things much easier than my personal page and keeps things in order. Just a reminder we are NPIP Certified and AI Clean... We are a working farm with biosecurity in place for pickup. These are already over the age of 6 months--- we have $36 in feed in them. They have been preventatively treated with Elector PSP and a natural wormer. Both which are safe and have no egg withdrawl. These are all coop trained and have free range time. They are use to coming and going in and out of coop. Today is Caroline's birthday. So she has a friend visiting for the afternoon. The routine has been adjusted slightly because of it, so Donkey Paul became a tad impatient. He followed me while I was collecting eggs. We had an extra farm hand when it came time to feed Paul, Dora, Boots and Cash. Cash welcomed the extra head rubs. When you have hens that free range from sun up to sun down, every day is an egg hunt. Some hens are helpful and lay their eggs in the nesting box or in a hidden low spot near the coop. Others lay them in places they feel are much safer. Today, we found one of their safe spots. 16 eggs in what must be a new hiding spot because all of them were fresh. How do we know they are fresh? We float tested them. Eggs that float or have an end lift off the bottom of a container of water are not fresh. Fresh eggs have the bloom entact and no air has permeated the shell, so they don't float in the slightest. Cool huh? #ncchicken #nceggs #farmfresh #egghunt #stokescountync

When you have free range hens, sometimes they use their nesting box, but most of the time they lay their eggs somewhere they feel is safer.... so safe that we can't find them. We uncovered a secret spot today while prepping the hay equipment for fall cutting. A float test confirmed 10 of the 16 were very fresh... the other 6 were a couple days older, but not by much as one end was barely floating off of the bottom. We’re loving our variety of eggs from our girls!
We’ve got 4 of our girls laying and one of them lays blue eggs!!!! We were super disappointed when we found out Annabelle and Doris weren’t true Ameraucanas but were instead “Easter eggers” because this meant we weren’t guaranteed blue eggs anymore. Annabelle lays our light brown eggs but it seems Doris is laying now and she’s giving us our blues!!
