Showy Orchis is kind to its pollinators, unlike those Lady Slippers! This plant is designed for the fit of queen bumblebees. That white lip is a large landing pad for arrival. Once on board, the bee is guided under the helmet to stick her long tongue to the bottom of those white nectaries for her nectar reward. But to do so, she has to stick their head in - just far enough for the orchid to attach its pollinia to her head. That term pollinia is a "package" of pollen grains, just like milkweed. Then, off she goes to another plant, leaving the pollinia to complete pollination. This orchid is noted as being capable of self pollination, but reproduction is superior with cross pollination. As it started to warm up in Germany, I headed out with a friend to find some bugs and test out my new diffuser from @cygnustech. I didn't find much, except this Platyrhinus resinosus beetle (Scarce Fungus Weevil) on some chopped wood - as always, correct me if I'm wrong with the ID😁 This little one kept really still during stacking, which is not usually the case with live specimens. Gisteren om 6:00 ging mijn wekkertje af en om 6:45 fietste ik het duin in en werd meteen verwelkomd door deze ree. Er is iets met haar rechter oog. Staar/blind en zelfs iets ingevallen. Op iets van 800 meter vanaf mijn huis (bron Google maps) bevind zich al een tijdje deze zeldzame bonte kraai. Jaren geleden, meer dan tien wel denk ik, had ik een witkopstaartmees aangemeld op waarneming om vervolgens een zooitje zelfbenoemde ornithologen over me heen te krijgen. Wat blijkt? Je hebt een staartmees, je hebt een witkopstaartmees maar je hebt dus ook een witkoppigestaartmees of zoals sommige zeggen een witgekopte staartmees. Veiligheidshalve kun je bij twijfel maar beter een witkoppigestaartmees aanhouden. Deze overgangsvorm is een stuk algemener en dus is het een stuk aannemelijker dat je die hebt waargenomen. Had ik jaren geleden ook moeten doen :) Het valt niet mee en zelfs als ik nu er nog het e.e.a. over nalees ga ik zo weer twijfelen. Foamflower with Quaker Ladies - a wildflower scene in a non-macro style that I typically don't post. I spent yesterday at Mt Cuba in Delaware - the most amazing native plant gardens. Last year, I couldn't get beyond taking macro shots of the amazing display and diversity of Trilliums. So this year, I put on my close-focus 40-150mm (not macro) lens. Not only does it require me to look at subjects differently, but as a bonus, I can get super close-ups of flowers in the beds from the paths. This wildflower series is a taste of early spring in the Colorado foothills from last week. The Spring Beauty is a look-a-like to the Eastern species, while that showy large Pasqueflower is unique to the West (and was the favorite of bees). Creeping Oregon Grape, a shrub, provided a carpet of yellow under Scrub Oaks, releasing an amazing fragrance. I was most struck by the ground hugging Star Lily. The first one I found had a single flower, others were hidden under dead grasses, but a few like this one were overachievers. The always amazing Larkspur were just getting started, timing well for the long tongue of hummingbirds that returned on my last day. And the large showy Wallflower is hard to miss. They are: 1. Western Spring Beauty, Claytonia lanceolata 2. American Pasqueflower, Pulsatilla nuttalliana 3. Creeping Oregon Grape, Mahonia repens 4. Common Star Lily, Leucocrinum montanum 5. Het moment gisteren waarbij ik dacht dat het wel eens wat zou kunnen worden. Uiteindelijk duurde het nog een uur. Dit is het hele plaatje, geeft de sfeer goed weer inclusief de omstandigheden. Door de harde wind ging alles te keer als een gek en door het weinige licht had ik een lage sluitertijd. Krijg je dit mooie effect. Verscholen in mijn regenjas stond ik tussen de struiken in de regen te wachten. Het vrouwtje zat helemaal vrij en aan haar krop te zien had ze al even niet gegeten. Ook haar gedrag wees er op dat er snel iets zou gaan gebeuren. Uiteindelijk duurde dat nog een uur. Ik had op mijn horloge gekeken en met mezelf een tijd afgesproken dat ik no matter what zou gaan. Mijn rechterbil begon zelfs te slapen (?) En eindelijk was het dan zo ver. Het mannetje kwam aangevlogen en vlak voor me in de lucht vond er een prooioverdracht plaats. Deze miste is, ging te snel. Het vrouwtje streek met een pimpelmees neer op een tak en begon zachtjes te roepen. Het mannetje kwam aangevlogen en een paring was een feit. The Trout-lilies were in full bloom yesterday. This beauty is at an intriguing stage where the anther is peeling back to reveal pollen. Trout-lily anthers are either solid yellow or a range of red-orange. These spring ephemerals grow in large colonies, and for unknown reasons, the flowers in some colonies will be exclusively yellow or red-orange. This flower was in a mixed colony. Gisteren weer een paar schitterende sperwermomenten in het bos hier meegemaakt. Vrouwtje zat voor me, meter of 10 afstand, op een meter of drie van de grond. Plotseling duikt ze op de grond en vliegt weer op om vlak voor me op een oude bemoste boomstronk te beginnen aan haar prooi wat een muis bleek te zijn. Het was natuurlijk donker regenachtig weer en dan op de bodem van een bos is het bijna niet te doen. Hoge ISO, lage sluitertijd en dan maar hopen. Ik maakte vele foto's en natuurlijk, ik zie vanuit mijn ooghoek iets fladderen en een seconde later vind er vlak voor me een paring plaats. Vandaag het maar een beetje klein gehouden om alle paasdrukte te ontlopen. Ieder jaar probeer ik ze te vinden en te fotograferen. Beide best lastig. Ik wil geen 'bloemtje op een steeltje foto' maar al vrij snel snap alleen ik waar ik naar zit te kijken :) Een poging dus van wat wilde kievitsbloemen. Dat 'wilde' moet je een beetje met een korreltje zout nemen want er zijn maar een paar plaatsen in Nederland waar de nog echt wilde exemplaren staan. Alle andere zijn verwilderde exemplaren uit tuincentra. Questions anyone? New Christmas Fern fronds will unfold soon. I had to look through lots of them for this perfect question mark shape to place on the final slide of my presentations. Christmas Ferns remain evergreen throughout winter in an attractive way. They're common in natural areas near me, probably supported by the fact that deer and other browsing mammals don't particularly like it. We planted a flat of plugs in our gardens ages ago, and they remain gorgeous and carefree in otherwise shady areas that would be challenging plant locations. That is except for one spot in the path of a downspout off the roof. Het ging allemaal niet vanzelf vandaag. Samen met Jan Met de Pet alle bosuilen plekken afgezocht die we kennen zonder resultaat (30 kilometer gefietst:) ). Een nieuwe wijk uitgeplozen en ook daar geen succes. Vervolgens komen we Jan Kuiper tegen die weer iets had gehoord van iemand maar eenmaal ter plekke bleek ook dat geen succes. Weer door het duin gefietst en terug over de landgoederen waardoor we besloten nog één keer te gaan zoeken. En ineens, ik ben daar altijd zelf verbaasd over, valt mijn oog op een takkeling die hoog boven in een boom ons aan zat te kijken! Direct onder het dier troffen we één van de ouders aan die de wacht hield. Mijn lente is begonnen :) Ik doe dit best al wat jaartjes en ieder jaar is het eerste moment dat ik ze vind altijd weer even wennen. Juiste diafragma kiezen om de hele kop scherp te hebben, goede ISO, juiste sluitertijd voor de tong, dat soort grappen. De eerste keer dat ik ging was het veel te koud en de tweede keer stond er een keiharde wind over het water op de oever. Gisteren beloofde perfect te worden dus ik nam snel een vrije dag op. Beetje bewolking met wat zon, goede temperatuur en weinig wind. Ik vond er totaal acht. Drie wist ik op de foto te krijgen en vijf waren me te snel af. Het waren zeven mannetjes en slechts één vrouwtje. A shimmering Venus' Looking Glass for #WildflowerWednesday. The name supposedly comes from its seeds that resemble little hand mirrors. A single plant appeared in our yard many years ago. While we planted much of our yard as a restoration from a fallow corn field, we also let nature find its way to by not weeding out unknown plants until we can determine what they are - mostly by waiting for them to flower. This was a reward in our herb bed, probably brought in with another plant. It's an annual plant that attracts teeny pollinators, but is self-pollinating - thus it can become prolific and "weedy". We still only have 1-2 plants in a year. Cat-tongue or Snake skin - which do you think this liverwort looks like? I checked this Snakewort (another of its many common names) yesterday at a local park where it covers a rock in the middle of a woodland stream. Only the section near the water shows any life right now, but I like these winter colors. Its summer growth will be a brilliant green. Liverworts and mosses are non-vascular plants that produce spores - not flowers or seeds. Otherwise, still waiting for blooming wildflowers here, except for skunk cabbage.
