Thank you for watching. Natalie Du Toit is a South African swimmer, Commonwealth Games and Paralympic gold-medalist, and Olympian. At the age of 17, she lost her left leg in a scooter accident. Prior to her accident, Natalie Du Toit was a teenage swimming prodigy. She was well on her way to qualifying for the 2004 Athens Games after just missing the cut four years earlier. However, in 2002 she qualified for the Commonwealth Game and became the first amputee to compete in the final of an international able-bodied swimming competition. She won gold medals at the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Paralympic Games, and in the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games. In 2008, she became the first female amputee to qualify for the Summer Olympics after finishing fourth in the 10km open-water race at the Open Water World Championships in Spain. After the 2012 London Paralympics, Du Toit retired – but only after tallying 13 Paralympic gold medals during her career. Her ability to physically adapt and keep her career on course is undoubtedly impressive. But her unwavering confidence, positive attitude, and hard work are what make her an elite athlete. Ever since I experienced being homeless many years ago in the streets of Manhattan - being lost, hungry, cold, and all the fear that goes with it – I would say a prayer of gratitude to God each day. Back then, my prayer was motivated out of fear, and would basically go something like, “Dear God, thank you for the roof over my head, food in my stomach, and the shirt on my back”. Focusing on even the little I had gave me hope. It was a prayer out of survival, necessity, and desperation. But what I have learnt in Bali, is that this level of prayer and gratitude, although serving a positive intention, is one dimensional. The energy that accompanies the prayer in times of shortage and struggle is often tainted with neediness, hopelessness, and frustration. Instead of reserving prayer only for the times, it’s most needed, the Balinese show gratitude multiple times a day in the form of blessing all things that come into their path. They hold a deep sense of gratitude and reverence for the simple fact that they are alive and are provided for in all ways by the abundant Island. They believe this kind of ‘living prayer’ will ensure they are blessed and loved throughout life – leaving no need or space for desperation or struggle in their lives. They see and feel God in nature, committing flowers and incense as offerings, seeing the mighty Islands’ volcanos as sources of divine power and energy. They disallow buildings that are higher than coconut trees so that the divine energy from the light and sun can always enter their space. Banana leaves serve as dinner plates. They also use leaves to make daily blessing baskets – the elements of nature are more important than the buildings themselves. They attract lightness and joy because their gratitude permeates their being. It does not come out of a place of necessity and fear. What would happen if you had to drop the fear and desperation in your prayers? What if the act of living itself became a prayer? Would you too, perhaps, begin living in a state of lightness and joy? Would you suddenly drop the need to live in the thickness of something thin. Sometimes all this requires is letting go, to see the magnificence.

Just three months later and Du Toit was back in the pool. Du Toit won multi-disability events in the 50m freestyle & 100m freestyle in world record time. The records didn’t stop there as Du Toit went on to make sporting history by qualifying for the 800m able-bodied freestyle final - the first time that an athlete with a disability had qualified for the final of an able-bodied event. Du toit said: “After Commonwealth Games, after Athens, when people started to get to know that I was a swimmer, and that, you know, I won a few awards, people started seeing my face before they saw my leg, and they've always been supportive and said: 'You know we always follow you, we've seen you swim on TV.'” . “Even when bad things happen you have to try to use those bad things in a positive manner and really just take the positive out of it.”- Natalie du Toit Natalie du Toit, a South African swimmer, best known for the gold medals she won at the 2004 Paralympic Games as well as the Commonwealth Games. She was one of two Paralympians to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Du Toit became the third amputee ever to qualify for the Olympics, where she placed 16th in the 10K, "Marathon", swim. She began competing internationally in swimming at the age of 14. When she was 17, her left leg was amputated at the knee after she was hit by a car while riding her scooter back to school after swimming practice. Three months later, before she had started walking again, she was back in the pool with the intention of competing in the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Du Toit swims without the aid of a prosthetic limb. Lei, che l’acqua ce l’aveva nel DNA dalla nascita, lei che proprio quando stava per realizzarsi ha dovuto fare i conti con la realtà, con un incidente in motorino che ha distrutto le sue speranze. Natalie ha subito un’amputazione della gamba sinistra a soli diciassette anni, ma non ha voluto rinunciare al suo sogno.
