Organization idea: Method Book Color Coding 🌈 If you have a lot of method books in your music library, color code the binding with dot stickers so you know which instrument is which without having to look at the cover! I got these dot stickers from Amazon (ten colors total) and made a chart to use for reference. Looking back on January 2023 when we interviewed team members Rachel and Ash about Unique Beatz, our project offering children and young people with disabilities access to high quality workshops featuring music making, singing and drumming. Stages is our weekly, term time session for 11 – 18 year olds. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to learn how to play drums, guitar or join their first band. The sessions can help to develop skills in production, beat making or recording or provide space to rehearse and the opportunity to get more gigs? Our experienced team cover all genres from hip-hop to jazz, metal to pop and everything in between. They provide support and guidance no matter what stage you are at in your musical career. We talked to everyone who came to Stages last term to ask them for their feedback and here’s what they said: 70% had an excellent overall experience 93% agree that Stages motivated and stretched them 89% said that it was good to develop their artistic skills Over half strongly agreed that Stages helped to improve musical skills and knowledge Over 80% said that Stages was good for their confidence and mental wellbeing The words they used to describe Stages are in the word cloud on the last slide. We made a Zine to demonstrate how participants in our Young People’s Programme navigated lockdown, to share the skills that they acquired and tell the story of how they adapted to the challenging circumstances of the pandemic. The story in the Zine shares learnings about important practical and social skills, gaining confidence, taking a mutually respectful, inclusive approach and how to advance ideas. It tells of opportunities to develop creatively and personallythrough a joint desire to escape isolation. It demonstrates how the group remained linked to the music scene and how the pandemic didn’t stop them! More Music’s youth programme provides young people with the opportunity to learn and develop new skills in a safe space. We provide a creative medium for self-expression, focus and positive relationships. We nurture confidence in individuals as well as teaching a variety of musical, practical and social skills whilst developing individual talent. There are a number of very popular sessions taking place at More Music, which enable young people not only to write and perform music but manage events and work towards achieving an arts award qualification. Young people continue to be part of the existing music scene and help to shape the future of music in Morecambe too.
