Yesterday marked the beginning of my month-long roadtrip, which, after hours of consideration through a rainy, rainy Kentucky, I have deemed "The Great Interior Drive." Here's a few shots from the road. On the first day, Monday, I covered about 600 miles from southeast Ohio to a campground outside of Hayti, MO. I departed at 5:30 and drove straight to Wickliffe, KY, stopping only for rest areas and gas stations. At Wickliffe, a enjoyed a view of the Mississippi before crossing the Ohio River to explore Cairo, IL, a once-prosperous city founded at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. After photographing here, I spent golden hour wandering the floodplain of the Mississippi River. Once the sun set, I parked at a campground off of I-55 for the night. Today was a (hardly) shorter 500-some mile drive from Hayti, MO, to Oklahoma City, OK. The day began rainy with a really nice lightning show going on to the northwest as I entered Arkansas. The skies were clearing by the time I got to central Arkansas, which worked out well for the couple of detours I planned to take. After doing some sightseeing near the AR-OK state line, I arrived to Oklahoma City and sat in my hotel for a bit before walking around the city in the evening. Oklahoma City is awesome! I wish I were here longer. Paddlefish Season starts FRIDAY! (Check the Missouri Department of Conservation for limits and guidelines.) ✨March 15, 2024 - April 30, 2024✨ 😃 Benton County is an incredible place for snagging season! Also known as “spoonbills” because of the shape of their snouts, the fish feed on plankton and other microscopic prey and therefore do not take bait from hooks and must be snagged. The best snagging conditions occur when water temperature reaches 50 to 55 degrees and there is an increase in water flow. This prompts them to move upstream to spawn. With area Spoonbill tournaments and guided fishing available, NOW is the best time to make plans for your snagging trip!
