What does breed specific enrichment look like for you and your dog(s)? I’ve always known about dogs needing mental exercise but only after I got Oscar did I realise that that can look different for different individual dogs. Here are the ways I enrich my beagle’s mind ⬇️ 🐾 I’m going to group puzzle toys, snuffle toys, tug of war, running, trick training, free walks etc all into this point. This is because these are things MOST dogs enjoy, and aren’t specific to Oscar’s breed. However, he still does enjoy them just as much as the others. 🐾 Scavenging : I love hiding treats and toys in different parts of the room and telling him to ‘Go find’. Oscar being a scent hound, absolutely loves using his nose and loves searching for goodies. 🐾 Hunting game : This is something I invented and I’m quite proud of it. I connect a string to a toy and hide the toy. I then scatter a few strings around the room so he doesn’t associate a string with the toy. I then tell him to go find and when he finds the toy, I yank the string and flail the toy around to simulate prey so he can chase it a little before chomping down. This is what beagles were bred for, to track and chase rabbits. 🐾 Tracking : An even more natural thing for him to do is tracking. I love letting him track the scent of dogs in the neighbourhood, and the scents of other animals when we’re out adventuring. Note that I only let him do it when I know he’ll be in the mindset to refocus off of the scent. If I note he’s getting too obsessed, I do intervene. 🐾 Scent-work : Something we’ve recently started is scent work. This gives a more structured outlet for his smelling desires. We’ve just only begun and I’m still learning how I can shape his change of body language into indicators. 1. These dogs are bred to go on forever. The MORE you physically do, the MORE they’ll be able to do. Teaching them to settle will be your hardest challenge & most days a mental activity/training session will tire them out faster and for longer than an hour of exercise could. You should STILL be aware of how much exercise they need but don’t be surprised if you go on a 5 mile run and come back and they still want more. 2. German shepherds have a high prey drive and are prone to reactivity. You have to remain consistent in your training even through their regressions and even if they develop temporary reactivity. You’ll thank yourself when you have a 2 year old dog that can handle any trigger. 3. GSDs can be very friendly and love anyone and everyone but don’t be surprised if there’s only one or MAYBE two people that they actually listen to above all else. Let’s be honest here… every dog much like us humans has their unique personalities, quirks and bad habits. While we like to tell Zara she is perfect we all know she isn’t 😜 She was an unruly puppy that was always getting into trouble and pestering her big brother - out to prove that despite starting out her life a little rough (we got her in a shoe box weighing 3.1lbs and vet aged her at 6-7weeks old) she was here to make her mark! In age she has mellowed, but she struggled with confidence being an only dog & living in busy area. She has regained her confidence after moving away from subdivision life - coming into her goofy self. While protective of her space, she is loving/ affectionate and would rarely turn down a back scratch. She shows patience with her sibling London whom she was pleased to welcome as a companion. Honestly, we are so happy this girl came into our lives. Little bit of scent work for Sammy. Just for fun and some mental enrichment and because Sam absolutely loves it so much! There is three videos. My husband did all the hides and I didn't know where they were either. We let him smell what he is searching for before it gets hidden. Hide #1: A piece of sausage in between two rubber mats. He honed in on it pretty quickly but I was waiting to see if he could indicate more precisely and if he would try and move the mat. Hide #2: A piece of sausage. Husband went through the house to the other side. He runs to the opposite side of the house pretty quickly but had to double back to find the scent trail. It was under the mulch. Hide #3: Birch odour. No food. He was quick on to this one. So I am happy he wants to search for odour as well as food. He is highly food motivated so I wasn't sure if he'd lose interest with no sausage. We need to work on him indicating more clearly and holding his nose to indicate that he's found it. But I notice his tail stops when he has honed in on it. He trots like a fox when he is searching. He never runs like this any other time only when he is searching for a hide. He changes how he runs when he hones in. You can hear him sniff and snort the air. Pretty fun to watch. Meal time is always one of excitement in our house, spins like tornados and drool puddles galore… We are a dry food household here but add lots of extras to the dogs bowls based on their medical needs, preferred flavors/textures and age concerns. They get very similar meals to each other with a few small tweaks.
