The Garbark/Soff house was built in 1937-1938 for professional baseball player, Robert Garbark and his wife, Eleanor in Meadville's north side. Together, Bob and “Toots” raised their 4 children at this home. Bob majored in mathematics and graduated from Allegheny College where he later returned as a physical education instructor and coach of the baseball team. Garbark made his MLB debut in 1934 as a catcher for the Cleveland Indians and played over his seven year career for the Cleveland Indians/Guardians, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Athletics, and Boston Red Sox. He later coached baseball for 32 seasons at Allegheny. He also coached the College football team for one season and basketball for 19 seasons. The home was purchased from the Garbark estate in 1991 by Christopher and Lori Soff. The Soff’s are thrilled to be only the second owners of this home and have lovingly renovated and updated the home over the past 33 years while also raising their family in the home. The gardens which cover the property include over 15 rose bushes, many perennial and annual flowers, an herb garden, fruit trees, berry bushes and a vegetable garden. Today from the Solarium! The Voodoo Lilly is closer to full bloom and over four feet tall (not including the table)! A generous donation this spring from Luann Knickerbocker has put elk horns (ok…so a little more than just the horns) and a mule deer mount back into the Solarium as they were in the historic photo in this post. Hello Friends of The Kilted Kiln: Every once in a while a person runs into someone who positively impacts their lives. The artist of the pictures presented has done just that to The Kilted Kiln family:) Over the last 7 years Steph has been our "Kiln Fairy", she has subbed as an employee when we have needed her the most, and she has turned into a great friend. Her passion and caring nature are unmatched and she is a true FIGHTER. Fighter you ask? Over the last year or so, Steph has battled stage 4 cancer and has crushed it into oblivion. She has used art to cope with this terrible disease and inspired us all along the way. Yes, "Art Therapy" is an actual thing and I believe in it more than ever thanks to her. The Kilted Kiln is excited to present "Steph's Spot" a way for her to showcase her art, inspire others going through the rigors of cancer treatment, and hopefully help defer some medical costs. It’s our opening day today! We have quite a bit on exhibit in United States Supreme Court Justice Henry Baldwin’s former study at Mount Hope: The Baldwin-Reynolds House Museum. Just a few of the artifacts on exhibit in this room: -Are those letters from THREE U.S. Presidents? Letters from Andrew Jackson, James Buchanan, and John Tyler to Justice Henry Baldwin -Sofa owned by Supreme Court Justice Henry Baldwin -Congressional desk used by General John Dick when serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. The desk was used from 1853-1857 when the new House Chambers were completed and put into service. Dick served until 1859. -“View of Constantinople from the East” by Antoine Ignace Melling, a gouache painted for King Joseph Bonaparte of Spain in 1802. Melling lived in Constantinople for 18 years and was imperial architect to Ottoman Sultan Selim III. He was later landscape painter to Napoleon’s first wife, Empress Josephine. This work was painted for Napoleon’s brother when King of Spain before being given by him to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Henry Baldwin. Henry Baldwin’s Mount Hope (The Baldwin-Reynolds House Museum) is open now through September on Thursdays through Saturdays from 11am until 4pm each day. We have a few surprises in store for you this summer at Mount Hope: The Baldwin-Reynolds House Museum! As we pull our solarium together for the season, several of those are in this room- we are actively collecting plants and have a few fun things including a banana tree and a VOODOO LILLY! The Voodoo Lilly (Amorphophallus konjac) is a relative of the rare Amorphophallus titanum or Corpse Flower. The Voodoo Lilly has an edible root (or corm) and a single flower with an unappealing scent that to attract pollinators. Amorphophallus konjac is grown in East and Southeast Asia. We are excited to share our Amorphophallus konjac will be in bloom on opening day- May 2nd! Stop in and visit for a tour of surprises as well as to see the Voodoo Lilly between 11am and 4pm.
