Test fit working with a new pattern. Doesn't have many finishing touches as it's the first run through, but it looks nice and I've already thought of a few modifications I can make to differentiate it from others as well as other creatures. Day NINETEEN of May for Makers. hey look at that I did two in a row. it's important to me to get out and hike. we used to do a bit more when carver was tiny. now carver and I have plans to get out every Sunday for a hike. today we went to South Park for a two mile hike. #mayformakers2024 what's important to you?

A friend asked me to make a stained glass panel of her best friend who recently passed. It's been a few years since I've had time to do any glasswork, so I am very excited to do this for her. Even though I am "an artist", I don't draw, so that is the hardest part of creating a pattern. It has to be exactly right, and my process is just try try again, honestly. Today I finished the pattern, my friend is happy with it, I picked out the glass and away we go! 😊 #stainedglass #stainedglasspanel #dogportrait #chihuahua #mayformakers #mayformakers2024 #handmade

Why it's important to prototype. Sometimes it's fine to just start and "go to school on the first one." But sometimes your design may be a bit uncertain in the details, and you don't want to waste good material. Prototyping with cheap/leftover mati can be a huge time.saber in the end, even if it feels like an extra step (or few). It can really help make sure you're on the right track In this example doing a quick prototype with scrap fabric let me know the pockets needed to be shorter. #mayformakers2024 #MFM @andtheymake #prototyping

May for Makers - Day 19: Why it’s important to ___ In my experience, it's important to embrace fear. Fear is one of the strongest emotions, but it's also one that can tell you a lot about yourself and your process. Being afraid of something isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes, it can lead you to amazing discoveries and creative solutions. At some point, I've had fear in every project I've done, and it's always turned out to be a solid alli. @plsmithed @andtheymake #mayformakers2024 #mayformakers

#mayformakers2024 Day 19 If you’re afraid to post it… just post it. Who cares if it doesn’t get “likes” — It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t “look good” — Oh well if they don’t buy your product — As long as you’re doing it for you and having fun, that is all that matters. Don’t let fear suck the joy out of it! Here are a handful of old posts from over the years that we felt weren’t post worthy. Just remember that your people want to see YOU and that at the end of the day, regardless of what you put out there to share, they follow you for who you are. Stay true! ✌️🤍🖤

Day 19 Why is it important to water pop the grain? Water popping is a technique used in woodworking to raise the grain of the wood before applying a finish. This involves applying water to the wood, which causes the wood fibers to swell and stand up. When the wood dries, it’s sanded smooth, resulting in a surface that’s more receptive to stains and finishes. For oil/clear finishes, I stop at 180. Anything higher, you’re just sealing the fibers more & more. #andtheymake #mayformakers2024

#mayformakers2024 DAY 19 - 'Why it's important to...' SLOW DOWN We live in chaos. We are bombarded by negativity in the news and the people around us. But, you can always make a little time for yourself... It helps recharge your soul, your creative outlet, your vision of the world. Me? I like going out in the Cube (@totallykubular) with the missus, having a coffee, going for a walk, admiring nature. I also really like taking photos. If you're scared to start, remember to start small. Your first go at anything isn't going to be perfect. If you're scared to try something new, just remember that it's okay to make mistakes, that everyone does, and its a part of the learning process. I still make mistakes on things i've done a thousand times - it happens. Its better to make those mistakes then to never try. Can you spot my mistakes in the first stonework that I installed? Its like a beacon to me, but I learned from it as I was going and If I ever do it again, i'll know what to do/what not to. Day 18 - #mayformakers2024 #mfm24 #mayformakers @andtheymake

May for Makers Day 18: If you’re scared to ‘start’ remember to ‘think about where you’ll be a year from now’! When I first bought my scroll saw, I set it up as soon as it was delivered. After that, it sat in all its shiny glory for a few months because I was so intimidated by it. I was scared to take the leap because I didn’t think I could do it well, I didn’t think I could cut a straight line. I watched so many other makers create beautiful projects, and I didn’t think I was up to the challenge. I finally bit the bullet, cut a simple project, and it was absolutely nothing special, but I did it. After that I began to challenge myself and strived to do better and more difficult, and that’s where I realized I could do it! Small steps equal big rewards, and every maker you see has taken the small steps to get where they are! Push past your fear, do the small things and they’ll become bigger with every step! The you a year from now will thank the you from a year ago! #mayformakers2024 #mayformakers #mfm #mfm2024 #scrollsawart #scrollsawartist #novascotiamaker #eastcoastmaker #maritimemaker @plsmithed @andtheymake

May For Makers - Day 18: If you’re scared to ___ remember to ___ If you're scared to start a project, remember what I posted early this month. Do the thing, don't die, repeat. I've heard people say that if you're afraid of doing something, it means you're going the right way. Oftentimes, we fear the unknown. So long as it won't do harm to anyone, do the thing! Day 15 #mayformakers2024 "The number one mistake new___ make, is ____" IMO the number 1 mistake new Makers make is thinking the need to go out and buy a shit ton of new tools to get started. You don't. You can start off with basic hand tools and work your way up, as needed. New, used, flea market, yard sales, or just low end brand new tools. Also, don't buy tools you don't need, until you need it. I have a few brand new tools I bought because I wanted it, not because I needed it, and it's still in my shop unused. Be smart. #paulmeyetteswoodshop #northeastmakersgroup #imakeri #woodworking #shoptime @andtheymake @plsmithed

Day 14 #mayformakers2024 "Does anyone else...?" Does anyone else store their paints, stains, and varnishes upside-down? I'll tell you why I do. When you store them upright, you quite often get a "skin" on top when you go back to it. This is because no matter how hard you try to get the top back on/in, there's usually a pinhole space allowing air to get in. When you store upside-down the paint seals off any pinhole and prevents the skin. #paulmeyetteswoodshop #northeastmakersgroup #imakeri #shoptime @andtheymake @plsmithed

If you're scared to introduce yourself, remember that everyone at a maker event is like you in many ways. Like many (if not most) makers I'm an introvert by nature. So I can find it difficult to introduce myself, especially to those who are very prominent in the Maker community. But I've yet to meet anyone who wasn't very nice and gracious. And they're all there because they enjoy making things, so you immediately have that in common. #mayformakers2024 #MFM24 @andtheymake @laura_kampf @davebauerart @whitehall_pottery #makercommunity @themakercamp

I have not done well keeping up with the May for Maker posts this year. Day 18: If you’re scared to grow remember to look back. I drug my feet with spending the money to expand my space. I wasn't sure if I was committed enough. Felt like it was selfish to pursue. I was snugged up in this tiny tiny room for quite a few years even after I outgrew it, I was plucking along at 2000+pots a year all thrown from this tiny nook. When I look back at that, I'm so grateful I made the decision to spend the money to grow into my new studio and wish I had a little more faith in what I was doing to take the leap sooner. Ben was so supportive and seemed to really enjoy helping with the build out, he'd been pushing me for a while to expand. Always having faith that his anxiety challenged wife was the only thing in between her success and growth. Today I'm designing drying racks and a clay storage solution for the new space and felt those old pangs again - trying to convince myself to pause on the remaining pieces of the studio. While trying to fix my computer I ran across this photo from 2020, the middle of worst days of the pandemic, throwing remembrance vessels and feeling a bit claustrophobic. #mayformakers2024

#mayformakers2024 day 18 If you’re scared to try something new, remember that everyone was scared to try the first time. This table I built was the first time I tried a lot of things. But the scariest for me was cutting mortise and tenons. This is the first time I built a table without using mechanical fasteners. Now, I feel like I can do it even though there are still nerves with every project. #mayformakers @andtheymake

Inspiration vs Influence, what’s the difference? For me inspiration touches different parts of your mind and soul, it brings a feeling that sometimes you can’t really put your finger on. Influence brings out different ideas, methods or thoughts, that can sometimes guide you to what you’ve been wanting to do all along. #mayformakers2024 @andtheymake @plsmithed #inspiration #influence #behindthescenes #blacksands #deepbluesea #epoxyart #oceanart #physiscollection

May for Makers Day 17: Inspiration VS influence, what’s the difference? For me, inspiration is what grounds me, what keeps me sane, what helps me focus and see things more clearly. The beach is absolutely my biggest inspiration. Influence is my environment, the world around me, trends and what others are doing or doing or creating. There is a huge difference between the two, and while I continue to follow trends when I get a request for a custom piece and follow influence, my heart gravitates toward what inspired me, like the beach and the sunset! @andtheymake @plsmithed #mayformakers2024 #mayformakers #mfm2024 #mfm #maritimemaker #eastcoastmaker #novascotiamaker

5/18/2024, 6:38:04 AM

#mayformakers2024 #mayformakers day 17 Influence and inspiration, while often intertwined, have distinct roles in shaping our actions and creativity. Influence is the impact or effect something or someone has on our decisions and behavior, acting as a guiding force. Inspiration, however, stimulates and motivates us, sparking creativity and new ideas. In essence, influence directs our actions, while inspiration ignites our passion and drives innovation Some things that have inspired me recently for context.

5/18/2024, 5:02:00 AM

Inspiration vs. influence. What's the difference? To me, inspiration creates an emotion. A spark. It can be an object or a person that inspires. @jimmydiresta inspires me to just get out into my shop and make things. @housemade.us inspires me to do more myself. Build my own tools, design more of my own parts. @federknives inspires me to do more voice work. To make sure my audio always sounds clean. To come up with more intelligent ways of presenting my work rather than just saying "here it is." .. Influence has a goal. Someone wants you to buy something. Weather influencing your travel plans or your attire. Close friends influencing what you're doing for the night, or who/what to avoid or engage. .. Are they interchangeable? I think at some point there is a gray area where things can overlap. Quotes can be inspirational, but they can be so powerful that the influence you to make a change. Something like that. Anyway, I've rambled enough. Have an awesome night! .. #reapermfg #wfiprojects #mayformakers #mayformakers2024 #MFM24 @andtheymake @plsmithed

5/18/2024, 2:43:05 AM

Inspiration vs. Influence. What's the difference. I think inspiration is more the big picture (and can often come from very different sources) whereas influence is more in how the details work together. Often one can be inspired and influenced from the same source, and I think there can be a lot of overlap. A recent example for me was seeing @_fingerhut 's use of color.. That clearly influenced me as as I decided to try more color in my own work. I've been fortunate to have many sources of influence and inspiration in the community - I won't try to name them all. #mayformakers2024 #MFM24 @andtheymake #leatherwork

#mayformakers2024 Day 17 To me “Influence” is a nasty word. I d never want to influence anyone to do whatever I may say. But “Inspiration” is a great word! I hope to inspire others to do whatever you’re itching to accomplish. Just try. You’ll likely suck for a while—we all suck at new stuff until we figure out a few fundamentals. So, what are YOU waiting for? Get out there and start sucking! Er, wait, I meant…get off your butt, ditch the excuses & made up mental roadblocks and try new stuff!!! #todayissomeday

5/17/2024, 6:48:25 PM

#mayformakers2024 DAY 17 - 'Inspiration vs Influence, what's the difference?' Well... For me, influence are the longer running, subtle (or otherwise) cultural impacts. Take my logo for example, the jaunty eyes are something I've drawn for many moons thanks to the incredible work of Jhonen Vasquez that marches through my veins, like giant radioactive rubber pants! Other cultural influences of my work are American Car & Truck Shows that I would visit as a kid... That whole Americana vibe engrained quickly, despite being a brit! 90's skate styles, and JDM culture also play huge parts on influencing my day to day ideas! Inspiration on the other hand, are the flirtatious passing fancies... A word, a texture, a colour combo... Anything that stirs an instant emotional connection! Nice prompt this one, I likey. #invaderzim #skull #wood #edc #coin #worrystone #coffeegasolinecult #coffeebook #mayformakers

May For Makers - Day 17: Inspiration vs Influence. What’s the difference? Influence changes your mind in ways it wouldn't normally happen. Where as inspiration expands your mind in ways it wouldn't on it's own. I find inspiration in many of the people within this community and several outside of it. Dipping into art, woodworking, engineering, and so many more. I find myself less influenced by them. I feel like the term "influencer" is sort of a dirty word. Be an inspiration! #mayformakers2024 #mayformakers @plsmithed @andtheymake

Day 13 #mayformakers2024 " I was today years old when I realized___" Ok, not really "today" but I have come to realize, your support group is very important in your growth. Family first, always. Day 12 #mayformakers2024 (yes I'm way behind) "The biggest mistake I made when I ___ is___" The biggest mistake I made in my Making life is doubting myself. I think I hesitate to do SOME things because I don't think it will come out right. Well, when you have friends like @jimmydiresta and @jackman_works to inspire you, and show your their processes, you gain confidence. Like Jimmy says "you go to school on the first one" and "just start" #paulmeyetteswoodshop # #northeastmakersgroup #imakeri @andtheymake @plsmithed

Day 15 of #mayformakers2024 🐣 🍀 ❤️ 🎄 ⚾️ One of the biggest mistakes I made starting out was not planning for holidays and seasons far enough in advance. I was constantly posting a new holiday collection just days before the holiday arrived. This created a lot of stress trying to get orders out immediately so they arrived in time and likely decreased the amount of sales I would have had if I planned ahead. While it's still a challenge to plan ahead for upcoming occasions, I've gotten a bit better. Mapping out the year has helped! Let's hope it continues. Keep a lookout for new collections as holidays approach this year! #livleilove #holidaycollections #mayformakers #mayisformakers

My favorite part about social media/the making community is just that. The community. Sharing knowledge, and making friends (that we may never meet in life, and that's okay). #mayformakers2024 Day 17: Inspiration vs Influence…what’s the difference? This is a tough one and I’m not sure I have a good answer. I do think there is a difference and I have two examples in my head to share. First, I was inspired to find a way to help manage my anxiety in November ‘17 and influenced to try woodworking when I saw what seemed like doable (with Tim’s help and tools) plans online for beer and wine totes. Second, I was inspired to try marquetry after seeing work by @chelseavanvoorhis and watching her instructional video and now I’m influenced by @albert.a.kleine to explore the double bevel method. Side note, this gobbler was one of my first pieces and the design was courtesy of my youngest. Stay safe and well. @plsmithed @andtheymake #silverhairandsawdust #mayformakers

#mayformakers2024 #mayformakers #andtheymake Day 12 prompt My biggest mistake I made when it came to woodworking was believing I could create high-quality products with subpar tools. If I could do it over, I would have invested in the right tools and materials from the start to produce top-notch art. Despite my skills, the quality of my work suffered due to inadequate tools. ✨BUY ONCE CRY ONCE✨

Day 16 of May for makers. My favourite part about ... crochet, is ... starting new things and getting excited about how awesome they will be. Sometimes projects can be arduous and painful, specially with my hands, but a lot of the time they start with a little bit, in this case a foot, and it is just the cutest beginning that fills me with joy. The finished item may be awesome, but that feeling of excitement when you start something and it goes well, it's the best. This is the first part towards a mushroom based creature to hide for the upcoming game of shrooms, I'll be posting photos of things I make and then hints for finding them on the day when it comes. I would lose a week or a month of work and life in a spiral of hopelessness after a triggering event (usually asking for help). 2.5 years ago I found a trauma therapist. A combination approach of EMDR and Motivational Interviewing have helped me rediscover who I am, and to know I can trust myself. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still trigger-able, but my reactions are much better and my boundaries are easier to enforce when I trust myself. This is powerful. I am beyond grateful. Therapy is rad. Pic: the giant trees surrounding my shed shop. A natural ombré. I was recently reminded that I live and work in the woods right on the border of a sprawling metro area. To me it’s just home; it’s good to be reminded how special this spot is. #mayformakers is a yearly, month-long challenge by @plsmithed and @andtheymake . To catch up on my participation, check out the “May4Makers” highlight on my IG profile #medicalPTSD #gettherapy #healingjourney #validationisrad #mayformakers2024

#mayformakers2024 Day 16 My favorite part about BEING A MAKER is MAKING MY OWN TOOLS. No roller, no problem! I made this simple bench-mount bender a few years back from scrap and it’s proven so useful. What’s YOUR favorite shop-made tool or jig?

My favourite part of woodworking is that there is always something different. New designs, new techniques, wood choices, different finishes... so many possibilities. There is always something to be done to change things up and I love learning new things, especially when they allow me to make improvements for furture builds. My favorite part of doing a project is seeing the finished product. Even if it's not perfect I can enjoy the sense.if accomplishment in having made something. Either for myself, or more often as a gift for someone else (which is even better). #mayformakers2024 #MFM24 @andtheymake #leatherwork #woodwork #making

Day 16 Prompt for #mayformakers2024 My favorite part of jewelry making is…’ Making something from simple materials. Wire, metal sheet, stones, beads and sometimes found objects. I love manipulating metal and pushing myself to work through the making process. There’s something so satisfying about having an idea in your head and coming up with a plan to make it happen. Taking a simple piece of wire or sheet metal and creating something beautiful is like magic! The design possibilities are endless plus I love scratching my creative itch! And hopefully in the end my pieces resonate with someone who will love them forever❤️ On that note, this cuff was really fun to make! She’ll be available soon! 😉 @plsmithed @andtheymake #youngmetaldesigns #coppercuff #lakesuperioragate #turquoise #handfabricatedjewelry #handmadejewelry #rusticstyle #kcmoartist #missouriartist

Day 16 of #mayformakers2024 My favorite thing about blacksmithing is the beauty of iron, both while it's polished and when it's still being worked. The array of colors and shapes attainable through proper application of heat and hammer is mind blowing. even after all the time I've been doing this I see shapes and techniques that blow me away all the time, and I absolutely love it. #blacksmith #candymountain #maker #handmade @andtheymake

The # 1 mistake new leatherworkers (or really any craft) is buying a bunch of unnecessary stuff when they first start out. From my very first project of this little pouch, all the way to a set of Witcher Armor, I used the same set of stitching chisels I got in a barebones $15 dollar kit. Add in a cutting mat, a ruler, and something to cut with, and you're golden. Pick up new tools that open up road blocks that your old tools may start to put in front of you. #mayformakers2024 Day 16: My favorite part about woodworking is the endless opportunities to learn and, as part of that learning, push my comfort zone and try new skills/areas of woodworking. In doing this I’m able to create (with love) pieces for our kiddos and for us and for our families and close friends and even do a bit of teaching. I appreciate all of you who help me with this learning and cheerlead for me in this journey. Stay safe and well. @plsmithed @andtheymake #silverhairandsawdust #mayformakers2022

I’m today years old and I just realized… That the drill press has different speeds, and I figured out how to change said speeds 🤦🏻‍♀️😅. I know I know, I shoulda known that. The drill press is probably one of the least used tools in the arsenal, and this year it’s been dusted off and being used more than it has been since year 1 of #carbonteal #mayformakers2024 @andtheymake @plsmithed #justrealized #learningnewthings #makerlife #🤦🏻‍♀️

The number one mistake new makers make (say that 5 times fast)... when starting out: you don't need all the fancy expensive tools. Work your way up to the bigger investments. Start small, learn tips/tricks, have a good time. Then when it's time to upgrade, go for it! .. #reapermfg #wfiprojects #mayformakers #mayformakers2024 #MFM24 @andtheymake @plsmithed

The number 1 mistake new makers make is thinking the machine doesn’t need a babysitter. It took me almost 6 months to leave the cnc running without supervision. Ken thought the 3D printer was sufficient enough to not have a babysitter. A few fail prints later luckily not a lot of material wasted. . . . #mfm24 #mayformakers2024 #mayformakers #plsmithed #andtheymake #makersofinstagram #woodworking #sidegig #laserworks #woodartist #decorativesigns #penturners #penturning #sawdustjunkies

May for Makers Day 15: The number one mistake new ‘artists’ make is ‘underpricing or overpricing their work’. Pricing is tricky, when I started out, I was absolutely undercharging for my work. However, my skills were not honed and my craft was not perfected. That all took time to learn, mistakes and practice to learn as I went, creating just a little better every single time. When you purchase a piece from an artist, you’re not just paying for the piece, you’re paying for the quality, the skills learned to create the piece, the time it takes to finish it, the tools and supplies necessary to cut and frame the backers, etc. I hope that all new and upcoming creators understand their worth, and price accordingly! @plsmithed @andtheymake #mayformakers2024 #mayformakers #mfm2024 #mfm #maritimemaker #eastcoastmaker #novascotiamaker #seashellart #nsseashells #coastalart #coastaldecor

#mayformakers2024 #mayformakers #andtheymake Day 11 prompt 3 Reasons why you should ___ in the shop/studio Popular opinion or not - praise and worship is INTEGRAL to my personal shop time. One - it helps me to enlist the Lord's protection, which I need because I am sometimes careless and do things like turn sketchy burl or just make dumb mistakes. Most of the time without even realizing it I will be singing thank you Jesus for the blood applied 🎶. Two - it connects me to the Lord throughout my work. It reminds me that everything I am doing should be with Him, and through Him, it doesn't have to be of my own strength. It also reminds me that all the things I have are a blessing - the tools and materials and opportunities and reminds me to be grateful, and thankful for them. ✨ Three - I think most importantly, you are full of what you feed on, and what you are full of is what you have to offer others. I want to be full of JOY and PEACE, and LOVE and I want to share that with others. I want to offer grace and hope and patience, I want to give others what God has given to me freely. Not the yucky grumpy version of Jessa that comes out when my gaze is fixed on me. 💕

#mayformakers2024 #mayformakers #andtheymake Day 10 I wish more people knew they could ___ by ___ (Matt) I wish more people knew they could increase their quality of work if they have passion behind it. There is a huge difference between doing something and loving something. I would never do woodworking if I didn't love it but because I do have a passion for it it shows in the quality of work. So my advice to anyone is do what you love in the results will show (Jess) I couldn't agree more with this - mostly because I find if I do a thing without passion, it comes out *wrong*. Something about it will just be off, no matter how hard I try, it just won't work. You can't force it, or it really shows.

Day:15 The #1 mistake new crafters make is not asking questions. Any questions to anyone. This image is full of questions. Some have good answers. Others, not so much. #mayisformakers #mayformakers2024 #andtheymake @andtheymake @plsmithed

Day 15. The #1 Mistake New metalsmiths Make is thinking they need to buy every tool they see. I started out with very few things besides my jeweler’s saw, and most of them I bought used on eBay. (Unfortunately the majority of my tools are in storage as I look for a new place, so I’m working with even fewer tools than ever.) If you ever check out Toolbox Initiative on Facebook, you’ll see amazing work being done with minimal tools while sitting on the floor (not my idea of comfort). It’s not the tools you have, but what you do with them that matters. First photo is some of my favorite tools that are in storage. Second photo is where I worked last winter, with minimal tools and supplies, in my mom’s basement- not ideal since she lives 6 hours away, but she did cook dinner most nights. #mayformakers #mayformakers2024 #toolsofthetrade

The #1 mistake newbies in general make is worrying too much about making the first whatever perfect. I'm not saying to be intentionally sloppy, but as @jimmydiresta says, you go to school on the first one. Better to focus on learning and accept that things won't be perfect. Even so they'll probably be more than good enough. #mayformakers2024 #MFM24 @andtheymake #learherwork #yougotoschoolonthefirstone
