uganda remains one of the friendliest places in the world when it comes to welcoming refugees from its surrounding (and beyond!), countries. these amazing soaps were made by sudanese and south sudanese women who have found refuge and support in a camp located in northern uganda, closest to the south sudan border. (a connection i made in my 2023 travels to uganda!) south sudan is in a (new) civil war, now. so so sadly, millions of displaced men, women and children seek safety, shelter, food and care and have found themselves in this very camp, which years ago, created a soap making program for refugee women (almost all whom are mamas). Last month Lucy was invited to take part in Bents Green special school careers week to talk to the students about what it is like working in shop. She supported to students in a role play activity, to take it in turns being the customer and the shopkeeper, an activity which they all really enjoyed. As well as talking about the skills you need to work in a shop, such as being friendly and helpful. Bents Green provides specialist education for young people aged 11-19 with Autistic Spectrum Conditions and communication and interaction difficulties. Four 💔 The number of NZ based fair trade stores I have seen shut or significantly downsize in the past few months. In a small country like ours, this is huge... and don't ask me to add up the small businesses I've seen close - there are too many to count. Truth be told, retail hasn't really recovered since Covid. And for fair trade businesses there are even bigger challenges involved that are making it harder to stay afloat. There are no shortcuts in fair trade production - when you choose sustainably sourced materials and place a value on fair wages, ethical working conditions and environmental protection it all costs more (the 'true cost' - and always worth it!)⚖️ In a world where it is becoming increasingly difficult to compete with mass production and big box brands, I want you to know that supporting fair trade on any level goes so much further than you think (you can read more about our artisans and the impact of fair trade on our website!)♡ Thank you for continuing to support our store, our artisans and our mission of changing the way we view and value toys here in Aotearoa.
