Lough Gur (Irish: Loch Goir) is a lake in County Limerick, Ireland between the towns of Herbertstown and Bruff. The lake forms a horseshoe shape at the base of Knockadoon Hill and some rugged elevated countryside. It is one of Ireland's most important archaeological sites. Humans have lived near Lough Gur since about 3000 BC and there are numerous megalithic remains there. Grange stone circle (the largest stone circle in Ireland) and a dolmen are located near the lake. The remains of at least three crannogs are present, and remains of Stone Age houses have been unearthed (the house outlines are known as "The Spectacles"). A number of ring forts are found in the area, with one hill fort overlooking the lake. Some are Irish national monuments. It is here that the 14th-century lord of Munster and poet Gearóid Iarla, votary of the Goddess Áine, is said to sleep in a cave and emerge at the time of Ireland's need to gallop around the lake on his great silver-shod white horse. A visitors' centre is open beside Lough Gur, along with a car park and picnic area. A gradual shoreline is present at the visitor area, with a shallow section of lake reaching up to the maintained lawn. As a result, the area is often used for water sports, though motorised craft are banned on the lake. There is a castle, or tower house (closed to visitors) near the entrance to the carpark. Named Bourchier's Castle after Sir George Bourchier, the son of the second Earl of Bath, it lies at the neck of the peninsula around which the lake washes. There is some other architecture dating from more recent times, with the ruins of an early Christian church by the road leading down to the lake. On this day in 1919 the famous rescue in Knocklong took place. The rescue of Seán Hogan took place at the railway station in Knocklong during the War of Independence on 13 May 1919. Hogan's colleagues from the Third Tipperary Brigade - Seán Treacy, Dan Breen and Séumas Robinson - were joined by Ned Foley, JJ O'Brien, Ned O'Brien, Seán Lynch, and Jim Scanlon from the East Limerick Brigade, to organise Hogan's rescue. Hogan was being transported by train to Cork, and the men, led by Treacy, boarded the train in Knocklong. A close-range shoot-out followed on the train. Treacy and Breen were seriously wounded in the gun fight, two RIC-men (Sergeant Peter Wallace and Constable Enright) died, but Hogan was rescued. He was spirited away to Knocklong village, where his handcuffs were cleaved by Séan Lynch, one of the rescuers, in the local butcher's shop. The rescue at Knocklong is commemorated in the song "The Station of Knocklong", which was a popular ballad during the Irish War of Independence. Ned Foley was later arrested and executed for his part in the rescue along with Patrick Maher, a volunteer from Limerick, who had no involvement in the rescue at Knocklong. Travelling Folk in Ballysteen Travelling folk visit this parish very often in the Summer but seldom in Winter except around Christmas, and Easter. Their ancestors also visited the parish in former times. Most of them are poor. They nearly all sell small articles, and the people buy from them. They get these goods at sales and bargain stores. These travellers generally remain for a night in camps and in by roads. They sleep in beds made of straw. They gather food from the people around the parish, and take anything that is given them. Most of them travel in families. Two men who travel alone visit this parish frequently - Dan Ryan and Paddy O Keeffe. The former is a poor man with nothing at all only depending on what he gets from the people. The latter is a pedlar, and goes around on foot with a big bag which contains many small articles such as - hair brushes, whangs; pins, needles, hosiery and studs. In exchange for these objects he receives horses hair which he makes into brushes. A tinsman named Mr Quilligan also visits this parish frequently. When he comes he remains about a fortnight and gets work from people of the neighbourhood or if not, he buys tin and makes tin cans, pans, saucepans and baking tins, and sells them before he leaves. A woman named Mrs Sheahan of Askeaton comes around looking for alms. My home district is #Drominoona in the townland of #Askeaton and the barony of #Kenery. Three families dwell in the district namely Walshes, Dorans and Nevilles. Two people live at Dorans, three at Walshes and ten at Nevilles. Each family had a one storey high house. Walshes and Dorans live about a mile in from the road and our house is situated on the side of the road. Two old people live in the district whose names are Mrs Neville and Mrs Doran, both of Drominoona. They know a little Irish which they got from their forefathers. They cannot tell Irish stories but they know English stories about the Hidden Treasure at #BeaghCastle Houses were more numerous former years. One was situated about two hundred yards from our outhouse and another one in Mr. Dorans beside the present residence. There are not any ruins except a piece of a wall now acting as a fence. One family emigrated to America. Some of the land is hilly and boggy, and the rest is fit for tillage. One stream is dividing Drominoona and #Ballyaglish and a lake is to be found in the district. County Limerick man Con Colbert, after whom Colbert Station in the city was named, was 27 years old when he was shot by firing squad in Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, on this day, 8 May 1916, due to his role in the 1916 Easter Rising. Cornelius "Con" Bernard Colbert was an #Irish rebel and pioneer of #fiannaéireann Irish: Conchúir Ó Colbáird, born 19 October 1888 , died 8 May 1916 For his part in the #EasterRising of 1916, he was shot by firing squad in #KilmainhamGaol #Dublin, on 8 May 1916. Born in the townland of #Moanleana #Castlemahon #CountyLimerick he was the fourth youngest of thirteen children of Michael Colbert, a farmer, and Honora McDermott. His family moved to the village of #Athea when Con was three years old. He was educated at the local national school. In 1901, his family were living in the townland of #Templeathea West. A younger brother, James, and a cousin, Michael Colbert, would later serve as TDs. He left Athea at the age of 16 and went to live with his sister Catherine in #Ranelagh, #CoDublin. Colbert continued his education at a #ChristianBrothers school in North Richmond street. He was employed as a clerk in the offices of Kennedy's Bakery in Dublin. "All Along The River" opening on Friday Night! Still on today till 4pm and during the week 10am to 4pm. It was lovely to see such a collection of artists celebrating the river Shannon. I have a piece about the @limericksuicidewatch Suicide Watch because our beloved Bernese Joey was so rambunctious that we always had to walk him around the river when the little dogs were gone to bed! (He liked them but they didn't like him!!) We regularly saw the wonderful work they do patrolling the river and providing a listening ear mostly. My other two pieces invited a lot of questions as they are Encaustic paintings, a quite unusual medium! They are based on the view up the River from #shannonrowingclub Annacotty, where all 3 of my children spent many happy years training. Last year, it was one of my greatest thrills to row up there myself in a double with my son Cathal...my 1st time ever on the water!
