The Blake exhibition at Tate Britain a couple of years ago was more extensive, but this one showed some of Blake's work I hadn't seen before as well as work from some European artists and engravers he influenced. Lampedusa by Steven Price is an achingly sad and elegiac novel about the final years of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. A lifelong reader diagnosed with a terminal illness, he decides to write a novel - The Leopard - that gets published posthumously and becomes one of the most-sold Italian novels. And again Cussler has a strong smart and fearless female character with hints of romance. I am virtually travelling to Malta, Italy, and the island of Lampadusa. The strong descriptions of the environment make me feel like I am on vacation. I also go back in time to the Egyptian City of the Dead and the French Revolution. There is something to be said for immersing yourself in a book over time, creating your own multimedia experience in your head. These epic action-packed storylines fit into a less than two hour passive experience means they get lost in translation. I am not sure I even want to read Sahara if I find a copy. Here, two scraps of wreckage, The Cross of Migrants, aka the ‘Lampadusa Cross’ leaning up against a column in Pembroke College Chapel, Cambridge. I wanted to share this photo - one I took while De Profundis were rehearsing a new CD...the moment that I felt beautifully captured the conductor's* posture connecting it both to the Lampedusa Cross and to Frederick Barocci's altarpiece painting 'Entombment' [copy], all within a audio ‘backdrop’ of sacred music. *Robert Hollingworth The Lampadusa Cross: “...a cross which is simultaneously a work of art, and a poignant reminder of the human cost of the Refugee and Migration crisis in the Mediterranean. The cross is made from the timbers of a refugee boat that came ashore at Lampedusa in 2016. The carpenter, Francesco Tuccio, has been using this material to remind the world of the frail boats and many deaths. 2443 people died in the Mediterranean in 2016 making the crossing. Francesco Tuccio has called this “The Cross of Migrants”. Its presence in the chapel is intended to provide a physical focus for our prayers and concerns. The College community has responded in a wide range of ways to this challenge. Fundraising, campaigning, welcoming a Visiting Scholar from a place of danger, sending baby slings, educating ourselves about the dynamics of the crisis, supporting a studentship for a refugee, and a studentship for refugee studies." Nossa Senhora de Lampadosa É uma linda imagem da Virgem Maria. Esta imagem era cultuada por alguns escravos que viviam na ilha italiana de Lampadosa, no mar Mediterrâneo até o começo do século XVIII. Eles eram provenientes da África e foram levados para a ilha escravizados por senhores italianos. Lá, por influência dos italianos, converteram-se ao cristianismo e adotaram Nossa Senhora da Lampadosa como Padroeira dos escravos e necessitados. Lampadosa ou Lampedusa é o nome de uma ilha italiana, Escravos devotos de Nossa Senhora da Lampadosa foram trazidos para o Brasil na primeira metade do século XVIII. Aqui, eles continuaram com sua devoção, já enraizada em suas vidas. Logo, esses escravos começaram a influenciar outros escravos que tinham vindo direto para o Brasil e não conheciam a fé cristã. Estes escravos aqui viviam sem identidade, sem fé, sem família e com muito sofrimento. Para estes, a chegada dos irmãos de Lampadosa foi um grande alento. Um alento do céu, um alento de uma Mãe carinhosa. A imagem de Nossa Senhora da Lampadosa aparece representada como uma jovem mãe que tem a mão direita um tanto elevada, com a qual segura um coração. Este coração simboliza o amor. Com o braço esquerdo Ela sustenta seu filho, o menino Jesus.
