A couple of beautiful shows in LA now: Alteronce Gumby at Parrasch Heijnen. His paintings are comprised of metals, glass and gemstones, including quartz mined by the artist in Mount Ida, Arkansas and asteroid particles the artist recovered from Meteor Crater in Winslow, Arizona embedded in acrylic. I couldn’t stop looking at these glistening surfaces. Bryan David Griffith’s mixed-media works are created by burning and/or salvaging materials from fire sites. Griffith’s works of smoke accumulated in encaustic beeswax on panel, and petroleum smoke accumulated on paper gleam with a healing, ethereal glow. They are from his Rethinking Fire series which explores the issues behind catastrophic wildfires, from past land management practices to climate change. The surfaces of these works comprised of soot and beeswax are stunningly beautiful. One must see these shows in person.

📍 Jorge Peris at @nicodimgallery Permafrost, Jorge Peris’s second solo exhibition with Nicodim, is an invocation of the apocalypse, a prayer sowed with salty tears. Relics of human existence populate the gallery: colored glasses are festively stacked in memoriam of some long-evacuated party; slightly knotted and twisted ropes hang themselves from the ceiling, would-be nooses whose accompanying necks disintegrated in an undefined past. Hely Omar Gonzalez, a California-based artist, brings a unique perspective to his art, drawing inspiration from his personal experiences. His work delves into representations of labor, race, and leisure, often existing between documentary focus and narrative fiction. The Gleaners, a notable series, depicts life on a marijuana processing farm, inspired by Jean-François Millet’s painting. Gonzalez immerses himself in the subject matter, living and working alongside laborers to authentically capture their environment. His artistic process involves Shibori dyeing linen, creating vivid underpaintings, and layering luminosity to portray natural and artificial lighting conditions. Gonzalez’s paintings, while showcasing the mundane with care, also reveal ominous undertones, highlighting the precarious nature of the farm operation. In addition to his exploration of marijuana cultivation, Gonzalez embarked on the Workhorse project, a two-year study focusing on the Toyota Hi-Lux mini truck, exploring its cultural significance and diverse uses worldwide.
