The Church of St Mary in Kinnerley, Shropshire is a striking red sandstone structure built in the 18th century to replace a medieval predecessor. Little is known about the original medieval church that stood on the site, but it is likely to have been 12th century or earlier as the nearby Church of St Mary in Knockin was built as a chapel of ease for the parish church in Kinnerley around 1190. The medieval church was rather dilapidated by the 1770s and all but the 16th century tower was taken down and rebuilt. Construction was completed in 1774, carried out by the Iron Bridge architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard. The Georgian church is wide and airy, with a stubby apsidal chancel. The pale blue reredos behind the altar bear the Ten Commandments, Creed and Lord's Prayer as well as plenty of rather baroque decoration. The current font was installed in 1862 during a rather restrained Victorian restoration. The original medieval font disappeared until the 1960s and can now be found in the churchyard as a glorified plant pot. It bears an inscription unusual for an English church. In lowercase Greek letters, the carving reads "Wash not only my face but my transgressions also", a phrase attributed to 4th archbishop of Constantinople, St Gregory of Nazianzus.
