Are my kids ready for a NZ Great Walk? With hut bookings opening just next week for the 2024/25 Great Walk season, you might be trying to decide if the family is up for an epic tramping trip Are the kids ready? Day walks are one thing, but multiple days for 6-8 hours on the trot is tough work If the kids have tramped a number of 6-8 hour walks (total time) and have coped well, they might be ready for a NZ Great Walk Our kids had walked multiple trails of up to 16km in one day before embarking on a NZ Great Walk. That gave a good idea that we were okay to attempt it ⁉️Here are the other questions I would be asking myself - Can the kids carry the majority of their gear (our carried all their clothes, sleeping bags, water and day food and as adults we carried all of the other food for them) Unless of course you have a huge pack and could take that weight for them - Can the kids cope with tramping food and whatever you pack for them. This isn’t the time when they can be fussy, they absolutely need the energy - Are they good at sleeping away from home? Have you tried an overnight hut first? - Have you hiked in adverse weather conditions or can they just “suck it up” if they have to? Kids need to be pretty resilient on multi day walks. On a day or overnight hike, you can more easily bail out if things don’t work out. You may be 30km from a trailhead so the kids need to be up for that. Also remember that some NZ Great Walks are easier than others. The Abel Tasman has many access points, water taxi options and if you tent, you can break it into many days of short walks. Other tracks like the Routeburn or Kepler, you don’t have the same flexibility (And of course you need to keep safe and know how to keep your kids safe) ⬇️ Here are a few mistakes we made on our first NZ Great Walk: The Routeburn Track (post continued in comments ) 🙋♀️Parents who have done this before… what else would you add? ❓Anyone done a Great Walk with the kids?

2024.03.09-10 Great Walks in 🇳🇿 忘了先看到推播的reels還是先查到網路上的資訊 只記得坐在樓梯眺望對面的山脊的那張照片（📷.2） 讓我著魔似地想爬 問許祐要不要一起走Kepler track，她竟然也說好（？） 拾起當時的照片和影片，永遠記得好喜歡這裡啊 最喜歡就是從Luxmore hut到Iris burn hut， 走過山腰上到山脊，身體的每一個細胞都在歡呼 (當然永遠記得有多累，也謝謝許祐一起瘋） ———Kepler track 資訊記錄區——— ⛰️環狀路線，全程60.1km，官方建議3-4天，我們走2天(累歪） 🛖網站上申請小屋或紮營，淡旺季小屋(Hut)的價格差很多，因為天氣因素，我們時間快到才預定 最重要的是需要提早去National Park Visitor Centre報到登記(📷.16我們當天一早開門衝去，館員還在標示天氣好Q) （建議如果健行天數短少就課金住小屋，當然要先有位置） 到了營區管理員會出來登記和介紹（📷.18-19) 因為kea半夜會出來覓食，有一個專門堆放行李的地方，怕kea咬破背包，晚上還會有超級爆多sandfly，記得帶防蚊噴霧 🐾起點終點是不同停車場，可以走路/搭接駁/搭便車，謝謝讓我們搭便車的好心一家人（📷.20）他們甚至還有來臺灣爬過山！！ #keplertrack #greatwalks #沿途都有廁所📷17好方便 #下次想去milfordtrack

This created the perfect reflections when stopping briefly at Shallow Bay. New Zealand 🇳🇿 May 2024 We took a small side trip to the Iris Burn Falls, spotting a Whio (an endangered endemic duck) on the river along the way. After departing the walk took us through thick temperate rainforest. We reached an area known as “the Big Slip” which occurred during a massive landslide in 1984. From here we encountered steady rain, which was too bad which the partial protection of the forest. Arriving at the Moturau Hut on lake Manapouri we found we found we were the only ones there. New Zealand 🇳🇿 May 2024 One of the best days we have ever had on a NZ Great Walk. The sun was shining, lighting up the glimmering snow caps and South Fiord arm of Lake Te Anau. We climbed up initially to the highest point of the 4 day journey to Luxmore Summit (1,472m). Not only were the view phenomenal but we also saw a mischievous Kea (alpine parrot 🦜) who had ripped a hole in one of our fellow hikers backpacks to get to his trail mix. The following section of the hike along the ridge line was the absolute highlight, with sweeping vistas on both sides of Lake Te Anau, the southern alps and Lake Manapouri. The first of 4 days takes us via the beautiful Lake Te Anau (the second largest in the country) stopping at a beautiful little bay known as Brod Bay before ascending 800m, reaching up above beautiful temperate rainforest. Once we clear the trees we can see the stunning vastness of Lake Te Anau and the Murchison mountains with Lake Manapouri and the Takitimu mountains in the distance. Let's go on another walk @ilonabouman_ says! 55kms, 2 days, 1 night later, and another great walk, "Kepler" ticked off. They say do it in 3 days, but my love was adamant we could do it in 2. 31kms the first day and 25 on day two, and my legs feel like someone has run over them in a car and then reversed back over them. This was by far the hardest walk I've done so far, but the views and scenery were absolutely breathtaking and worth it.
