James “Jim” Barnett: One of the most influential and historically important “behind the scenes” people in pro wrestling history was an openly gay man born in Oklahoma City. His name was Jim Barnett and his initial entry into the wrestling industry was working for the magazine “Wrestling As You Like It” which was owned by Chicago promoter Fred Kohler. Jim eventually got involved in the operations of the promotion and a business partner with Kohler in the NWA’s Indianapolis territory. Many wrestling historians and veterans of the business from the ‘50s have credited Barnett with the innovation referred to as “studio wrestling”. The idea, which became a staple of the business for decades, was that short matches and promos would be filmed in front of a small audience in a television studio to promote the more profitable house shows. In 1958 Barnett became business partners with promoter Johnny Doyle who was running shows on a national basis in multiple cities sometimes as part of the NWA but sometimes against them. In 1964 Barnett and Doyle sold their Indianapolis and Detroit promotions and set up World Championship Wrestling in Australia. The promotion was a huge hit and lasted a decade before Barnett sold his stake and returned to the US in 1974. He had been recruited to help win the “Battle of Atlanta” for promoter Bill Watts against Ann Gunkel. In 1976 after their home tv station became distributed nationally on satellite the promotion was named Georgia Championship Wrestling and was hugely popular. In 1984 ,after a falling out with part owner/booker Ole Anderson, Barnett orchestrated with partners Jack and Jerry Brisco the sale of GCW to Vince McMahon. Vince wanted the cable television slot on TBS .It’s known as Black Saturday since it was the end of GCW. It was a disaster as fans rebelled and eventually Barnett (now WWF Vice President) negotiated the sale of it to Jim Crockett Promotions. Barnett was an important figure during the first three WrestleManias before leaving for Crockett. Barnett worked for WCW as a talent scout and later as adviser to Vince McMahon until his death. Nov 15 1970 - #LarrySiegfried, technically a "former #blazer", dished out 21 assists in #SanDiegoRockets 136-118 victory over the @trailblazers. Siegfried, who was drafted by the Blazers in the expansion draft on May 11, 1970 from the roster of the @celtics, was traded to the Rockets for #JimBarnett the very same day. Siegfried played college basketball at @theohiostateuniversity and was a member of the 1960 @ncaa Title team with future @NBA @naismith_hall of Famers #JerryLucas and #JohnHavlicek as well as future Hall of Fame coach #BobbyKnight. He was also a member of the 1960 @usabasketball Olympic Basketball team that won the Gold Medal in Rome. He backed up the starting guards tandem of Oscar Robertson and Jerry West. Drafted as the 3rd pick in the 1961 NBA draft by the Cincinnati Royals, he played for the ABL Cleveland Pipers during the 1961/62 season and helped the Pipers to the Championship in the short-lived league. The team, owned by future New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and coached by John McLendon and Bill Sharman. Future NBA players Dick Barnett and Connie Dierking were among that team's stars. He joined the Celtics for the 1963/64 season and won 5 NBA rings over the next 7 seasons as a reserve before the 1970 expansion draft. Following his NBA career, Siegfried counseled prisoners at the Mansfield Correctional Institution in Ohio and did motivational speaking. He also served briefly as the Executive Director of the Central Ohio Chapter of The Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC). He passed away from a heart attack on October 14, 2010. Elvin Hayes led the Rockets with 29 points and 23 rebounds as the Rockets out-rebounded the Blazers 77-47. Jim Barnett had 24 for Portland and Stan McKenzie had 19. Prior to the game, it was announced that #BillStricker was waived by the Blazers. Stricker played in 1 game, scored 4 points, and earned a technical foul before legally entering the game when he jumped from the bench and ran onto the floor.

Entering the final quarter, Portland was behind by 5 points and eventually falling behind by 8 before mounting the comeback to record the win. In un articolo pubblicato su @wearemel il giornalista David Bixenspan ha riassunto le vicende tra #PatPatterson e il governo #USA legate alla sua #omosessualità. Il dipartimento dell’immigrazione ha indagato in un periodo di tempo tra il #1964 e il #1967 #Patterson, volevano dimostrare che fosse #gay per poterlo deportare in #Canada, suo paese di nascita. Quando nel #1962 si trasferí a #Portland da #Boston, sotto la guida di #DonOwen, conobbe il suo compagno Louie Dondero (rimasero insieme fino alla sua morte nel 1998) e iniziò a frequentare la scena gay, interpretando un personaggio effemminato sul ring. La polizia interrogò molte persone e pure #Pat in un paio di occasioni. Data l’impossibilità di avere delle confessioni da possibili partner sessuali e negando la sua omosessualità, il governo aveva preparato una trappola. Sarebbe dovuto tornare in Canada entro il 10 gennaio del 1967 e, al momento della richiesta di un permesso di lavoro all’ambasciata americana nel #Quebec, sarebbe stato costretto a una valutazione psichiatrica per accertarne l’omosessualità, negandogli cosí il visto. Non è chiaro cosa successe, non ci sono record tra il 9 e il 16 gennaio, e nella primavera del 67 fece un tour in #Australia, ripresentando domanda di permesso di lavoro solo nel 1971, con l’intervento di #JimBarnett, #RoyShire e Owen. Questo tipo di situazioni furono comuni e dovrebbero far riflettere sulla storia dal punto di vista #LGBT.

7/14/84 𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝑺𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒅𝒂𝒚 One of the most infamous days in wrestling history occurred when Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation took over the time slot on Superstation WTBS that had been home to Georgia Championship Wrestling and its flagship weekly program, World Championship Wrestling. In 1972, Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW) aired its weekly Saturday evening show on WTCG from 6pm-8pm. In 1976, GCW got a national cable deal on the renamed Superstation WTBS, and eventually began airing their show at 6:05pm ET called World Championship Wrestling. The Brisco brothers, Jack and Gerald, had major stakes in Georgia Championship Wrestling, while Ole Anderson had a minority stake, but was its head booker and ran day-to-day operations. Vince McMahon was working on his plan to expand the WWF to a national audience. In 1983, he purchased Texas-based Southwest Championship Wrestling’s Sunday morning timeslot on the USA Network and replaced their show with WWF’s All American Wrestling. Vince McMahon later decided that he needed a second cable deal to further his expansion plans and he made an offer to Ted Turner buy GCW's timeslot. Turner declined the offer, however GCW was on shaky ground due to Ole’s booking and operating, and the other owners not liking the direction. McMahon got GCW’s other three owners, Jack and Gerald Brisco and Jim Barnett, to sell their 90% stake in the company for $900,000, and took over the Saturday night timeslot. On July 14, Freddie Miller, the only on-camera performer remaining from the ownership change, opened the show before turning it over to Vince McMahon. This was blasphemous to GCW fans tuning in. Not even before the show ended, GCW fans began flooding and blowing up switchboards to TBS. Complaints soon came in by the thousands via phone calls and letters about WWF’s style of wrestling, emphasizing cartoonish larger-than-life personalities rather than GCW's gritty, athletic-based competition. Fans were also upset with the loss of legendary announcer Gordon Solie.
