Meshuggah: Immutable I am honestly glad that I am now able to truly enjoy tons of Meshuggah’s output after listening to albums like Obzen and Chaosphere. The first album that I listened to was this 2022 release and It did not really leave a good first impression on me and I haven’t really listened to it again since. I at first found it pretty boring but I think I wasn’t exactly used to their style yet. Since then, I have grown to really appreciate their sound so I am curious to revisit this album. I gave it another listen and yeah I definitely enjoyed it more. This album definitely maintaina the same extreme atmosphere and djenty rhythms that Meshuggah is known very well for, but the weirdest thing about it is that the album gives off some sort of a doom metal atmosphere with tracks like “Broken Cog”, “They Move Below” and “Past Tense” which actually dives into some funeral doom territory. Plus, this album is the only meshuggah album to go over the one hour mark, and I feel some of the slower and atmospheric songwriting played a big part of that. Due to this album usually sounding more doom oriented, this would mean the musicianship would kinda falter. Thomas Haake’s drumming isn’t quite as impressive as they were in Obzen for instance. Also Jens Kidman’s vocals are as cool as they always were, but there are definitely moments in the first track where he would mostly whisper. Luckily, the album would manage to kick their musicianship into high gear with tracks like “The Abysmal Eye” and “Phantoms”. All in all, I definitely had a better time listening to this album. I would not at all recommend this album to anyone who is brand new to Meshuggah since this album has less to latch on to as opposed to albums like “Nothing” and “Obzen”, but it’s still a cool album to check out. Nine years ago, I accidentally came across Meshuggah at a festival. At that point in my life, I had only dipped my toes into extreme metal, and particularly hadn't heard the more technical or progressive stuff yet. I certainly wasn't ready for hearing Meshuggah, but I remember I was highly fascinated by the insane rhythmics and the sheer violence of their sound and Jens Kidman's ice cold vocals. Fascinated, but also quite overwhelmed. I dipped my toes a bit more, I took some deep dives, and when I was ready, I wanted to see Meshuggah again. But they never toured. Or they toured but didn't come to Hamburg. Or they cancelled shows during the pandemic (of course they did). Or I don't know what else went wrong, but it took me until last week to catch them for the second time in my life. And I tell you, my listening perspective might have changed in those nine years, but Meshuggah haven't lost a single bit of their fascination. Their show possessed an impossible power, with the band members standing almost motionless on stage while the lights in their backs went nuts in all colours and their riffs rolled over us. They played with skilful precision and still it felt like you were hit by a monster truck. My second Meshuggah show blew my mind even more than the first one nine years ago. Thomas Haake really gives that song and especially this entire album life with his bludgeoning drumming and wonderful use of polyrhythms. If you asked a metalhead or a Bill Burr fan for an example of a polyrhythm, I am pretty sure they would cite that song as a good example. But I don’t think I have ever fully listened to that song; and now that I have, I now wonder why haven’t I. I feel the heavy-hitting-ness of the drumming might’ve been a bit overwhelming for me to continue(which is a GOOD thing), but the atmospheric bridge halfway through was a really neat touch. However, Bleed is not the only song in this album. Every other song in here goes insanely hard. Electric Red for instance is a song that is just relentlessly heavy. Fredrik Thordendal and Mårten Hagström also make some absolutely amazing riffs. It frequently blows my mind that this band exists due to how mathematically accurate the rhythms are. I even appreciate how this band also likes to take breaks with more atmospheric segments alongside the band’s insane polyrhythms. Some examples include “Combustion”, the aforementioned “Bleed” and “This Spiteful Snake”. It allows this album to be more accessible in spite of its unrelenting heaviness. All in all, this album is a straight up masterpiece. I haven’t listened to Destroy Erase Improve or Catch Thirtythree, but for now, this would definitely be my favorite Meshuggah album and I would even put this in my top 10 Swedish metal albums if I had one. Don’t ask me what it is because I haven’t listened to all Swedish albums and it would be incredibly difficult to actually attempt to make that list. But Obzen would definitely be there.
