A wall of inspiration. I've spent the day with the mentoring group at @paintbox_artschool today. The first task was chopping up two large paintings on paper I did there a few months ago. This was the result. I finished a couple of larger works inspired by these today. It's always a wonderful energy in the room with everyone painting together. Feel lucky to have this monthly source of collaborative practice.

SURE OF WHAT SHE WANTS. When I asked her about her plans for her future she said she was a traditional woman. I took that to mean she would conduct her life as was typical of her country 's way to do things regarding marriage, children, and a career. She sounded sure and committed to this path and yet I wondered. Other things about her I felt were an indication of a dedicated and powerful inner person who may want something quite a bit more in her life rather than the accepted routine. It was for only one day I got to know her. I kept her statement in the back of my head wondering what would happen in her future. I met her again 6 years later when she was expecting her first child. It's too early to tell but maybe she is the kind of person who ultimately can do everything that is inside of her waiting to be discovered. So important to me was what I could discover in the camera about her. She was an excellent model as some of my strongest artworks from the project, "The New Global Woman", feature her. This artwork about her was created 2 days ago, a final result of seven other attempts over 8 years to feature this small headshot of her. . Inspired by the beautiful scenery in East Lothian at this time of year, this painting is a mixture of texture and colours found in the fields and along the coastline. The red earth and cabbage fields surrounding Dunbar feature heavily in this body of work - created for my upcoming exhibition at @birchtreegalleryedinburgh. N E W W O R K S O N P A P E R Fresh from the painting table, 3 new landscape studies in charcoal and watercolour. If you scroll through, you’ll see they started with big sweeping lines and marks in charcoal moving across the 3 pieces. I’ve got some new watercolour paints in tubes, and they are brilliant. Colour mixing is so much easier. I’ve only ever had them in a tin (half pan) and discovered I like to use big flat wide brushes and it wasn’t working out so well. Also my watercolour paints were so old. They were hand me downs from family and had seen better days. It was definitely time to indulge in some new paints. The frustration I’m having though is that I want to explore painting bigger, either on paper or canvas in charcoal and watercolour, like these, just scaled up. Only paper seems to come in certain sizes and I’ve not ever painted on canvas in watercolour, so I’m heading into unknown territory. It’ll be 2 years this month since I started on this journey of focusing on painting and there’s always new ground to cover, it can just feel a little unsteady at times. Days out on the hill before dawn earlier this month, black grouse gather, resplendent in glossy black and white plumage with a touch of vivid red at the eye. Males promenade side by side measuring each other up. They turn to face one another, glaring, wings and tail held stiffly in position, a show of might. ABOUT ME A little behind with this week's post for #ssfmay2024 👋But a big hello to any new followers or to anyone who doesn't really know me. I'm Charlotte a North Yorkshire based potter, who has been pottering away for the last 14+ years. 🎓After graduating from the Univercity of Cumbria back in 2009, I set up my own pottery business & grown it slowly over the last 14 years. 🍶I handbuild all my ceramic work & use predominantly porcelain clay, which is a beautiful clay - even if it can be a little awkward at times! 🌱My work is decorated in various ways, but generally inspired by nature & the landscape around me. This is my second time taking part in @supersecondsfestival & I'm really looking forward to being part of it again on the 11th-12th May.
