⚠️ FOREWARNING - THIS IS A MUSHY POST - KEEP SCROLLING IF YOU’RE NOT INTO SAPPY SHIT ⚠️ “Feeling uncomfortable in my own skin” is a statement I never thought I could come to terms with. And I mean that in a metaphorical but also literal sense. For a long time, I was ashamed of the stories that my scars told. To an outsider, I can see where this post may seem “over-exaggerated” or like any other post about “surface-level” insecurities. But to me, it’s a bit more than that. Trauma, pain, embarrassment, humiliation, heartache, violence, fear, and hostility have all been embedded into the scars I wear on my face. For a long time, I lost sight of who I was, literally. I was nauseous at my own reflection. I tried to purposely go unnoticed. I felt hideous and absolutely disgusting. I dreaded first impressions. I didn’t want to be seen. I didn’t want my picture taken. For a long time, I didn’t want to remember how much of myself I had lost. Today, I let them gleam under the sun; I don’t put effort into hiding them (much) anymore. I know that each one a testament to the person I am today - a person I’ve come to be proud of. These marks, etched on my skin, also tell stories of resilience and the beauty of rebirth. I’m learning to be okay standing in every fragment of my being, finding peace and pride in the skin I’m in.
