First Full-Scale Retrospective of Chinese American Architect Ieoh Ming Pei, Laureate of the 1983 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Exhibition set to debut in Honk Kong in June Organized with the support of the Estate of I. M. Pei, PEI Architects, and Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, the exhibition is curated by Shirley Surya, Curator, Design and Architecture, M+, and Aric Chen, General and Artistic Director, The New Institute, Rotterdam. This retrospective features more than three hundred objects, many of them never exhibited before. These include original drawings, architectural models, photographs, films, and other archival documentation from institutional and private holdings. The architectural model for the Johnson Museum, created by I.M. Pei and Partners, captures a wide expanse of Fall Creek Gorge in #IthacaNY and the Arts Quad at #Cornell. Sucou muzeum - jedno z najnavstevovanejsich muzei na svete. Moderna cast muzea je navrhnuta slavnym architektom I.M.Pei-om. Vstupenku za asi eur 30 bolo treba rezervovat a na dnes uz mali vypredane, ale ako ztp mi dovolili ist zadarmo a prednostne. Kedze bolo naozaj teplo, vlhko a za chvilu mi isiel vlak - pozrela som si hlavne muzejne zahrady. Ale muzeum je obrovske a ma mnoho zbierok v interieri, ktore ja som nevidela a dal by sa pri nich stravit cely den. / Suzhou Museum - one of the most visited museums in the world. The modern part of the museum was designed by famous architect I.M.Pei. The ticket was about eur 30, but was sold out, but as I am disabled, they allowed me to enter free of charge and as a priority. As it was really hot, wet and my train was going soon, I visited mainly museum gardens. Hace 5 años murió, a los 102 años, uno de los arquitectos más apreciados de nuestro tiempo, creador de la Pirámide del Museo del #Louvre... #impei Ieoh Ming Pei (Cantón, República de China, 26 de abril de 1917 - Nueva York, 16 de mayo de 2019), conocido comúnmente como I. M. Pei, se trasladó a los 18 años a los Estados Unidos para estudiar arquitectura. Se graduó en 1940 en el Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts. Entre 1945 y 1948 amplió su formación enseñando en Harvard como profesor adjunto, bajo la tutela de dos famosos arquitectos europeos, Marcel Breuer y Walter Gropius. A raíz de ello se considera a Pei como uno de los sucesores americanos de los grandes maestros de la arquitectura europea. En 1955 Pei se nacionalizó en EE UU. En sus proyectos Pei busca la pureza de líneas, unida a una eficacia funcional, siguiendo el llamado "estilo internacional" y los criterios de Gropius. Utiliza frecuentemente formas abstractas, recurre a materiales fríos, como el acero, el cemento y el vidrio, e incorpora efectos que resultan impactantes para el observador. Sus obras se caracterizan en muchas ocasiones por unas estructuras que requieren soluciones valientes. Born in Guangzhou, Pei drew inspiration at an early age from the garden villas at Suzhou, the traditional retreat of the scholar-gentry to which his family belonged. In 1935, he moved to the United States and enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania’s architecture school, but quickly transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduating, he joined the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) and befriended the Bauhaus architects Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. In 1948, Pei was recruited by New York City real estate magnate William Zeckendorf, for whom he worked for seven years before establishing an independent design firm, I. M. Pei & Associates, in 1955. In 1966, that became I. M. Pei & Partners, and became Pei Cobb Freed & Partners in 1989. Pei’s first major recognition came with the Mesa Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado (designed in 1961, and completed in 1967). His new stature led to his selection as chief architect for the John F. Kennedy Library in Massachusetts. He went on to design Dallas City Hall and the East Building of the National Gallery of Art. He returned to China for the first time in 1975 to design a hotel at Fragrant Hills and, fifteen years later, designed Bank of China Tower, Hong Kong. In the early 1980s, Pei was the focus of controversy when he designed a glass-and-steel pyramid for the Louvre in Paris. He designed the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, the Miho Museum in Japan, Shigaraki, near Kyoto, and the chapel of the junior and high school: MIHO Institute of Aesthetics, the Suzhou Museum in Suzhou, Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar, and the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art in Luxembourg. Pei won prizes and awards in the field of architecture, including the AIA Gold Medal in 1979, the first Praemium Imperiale for Architecture in 1989, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, in 2003. In 1983, he won the Pritzker Prize, which is sometimes referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture.
