McMahon's World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1983. McMahon purchased the company from his father in 1982 and pushed it into pop culture with The Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection on MTV, drawing record house shows, pay-per-view buyrates, and television ratings in the process with Hogan being a 12-time world champion for the organization that being a six-time WWF/WWE Champion, six-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, and a former WWE World Tag Team Champion as the premier face of the company along with being IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, AWA World Heavyweight Champion (2 Times), NWA Southeastern Heavyweight Champion and Southern Division Champion (2 Times), and NWA World Heavyweight Champion. During his initial run, Hulkamania ran wild for an astonishing 1,474 days as Hulk Hogan held the WWF World Heavyweight Championship from April 2, 1984, to February 5, 1988. During his first WWF/WWE tenure, he defeated such greats as Nikolai Volkoff, Greg Valentine, King Kong Bundy, Andre the Giant, Ted DiBiase, Randy Savage, Zues, Big Boss Man, Sid Vicious, Sgt. Slaughter, The Iron Sheik, Don Muraco, Kamala, Mr.Wonderful, Mr. Perfect, The Undertaker, and many others! In a September 4, 1988 promo, Hogan donned the War Bonnet helmet (seen above in the 8th picture) in front of his Hulkamania logo screen and officially declared war on the WWF, starting with Ted DiBiase. WWE Mattel Elite Legends Series 12 After a rough childhood in Canada, Roderick George Toombs started wrestling under the care of promoter Al Tomko in Canada billed as coming from Glasgow and was known for his signature kilt and bagpipe entrance music; this was because of his Scottish heritage. Piper earned the nickname #RowdyRoddyPiper by displaying his trademark "Scottish" short temper, spontaneity, and quick wit. From 1973 to 1975, Piper was a jobber in the AWA. By early 1976, Piper was a top villain for National Wrestling Alliance and went to Mid-Atlantic Wrestling. 1980 until 1983, as a fan favorite Piper feuded with Greg Valentine, Sgt. Slaughter, and defeated Ric Flair for the NWA United States Heavyweight Title. Piper's feud with Valentine culminated in a dog collar match at the first Starrcade. Valentine broke Piper's left eardrum. He came to WWF now WWE in 1984, quickly rising to astronomical heights. He became a WWF mainstay and often engaged in heated interview segments that rank among the most entertaining in the company’s history by hosting the "Piper’s Pit." One of wrestling's most recognizable stars, Piper headlined multiple PPV events, including the WWF and WCW's respective premier annual events. He accumulated 34 championships and acted in dozens of films and TV shows. Most notably, he took the lead role of John Nada in the 1988 cult classic They Live. Piper returned to WWE for good as a vaunted member of the 2005 Hall of Fame, working there until 2015. On July 24, 2015, Piper appeared as a guest on The Rich Eisen Show. He had trouble collecting his thoughts and staying focused, often rambling and not answering Eisen's questions. Roussimoff relocated to North America in 1971. From 1973 to the mid-1980s, Roussimoff was booked by World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) promoter Vincent J. McMahon as a "special attraction" who wrestled for promotions throughout the United States, as well as in Japan for New Japan Pro-Wrestling. During the 1980s wrestling boom, Roussimoff became a mainstay of the WWWF (by then renamed the World Wrestling Federation), being paired with the villainous manager Bobby Heenan. His disputable winning streak was ended when Hulk Hogan picked up the 7 foot tall, 500 pound giant and body slammed him for the pin at WrestleMania III. Over 94,000 fans viewed this history making match up, setting an indoor record which still stands today. In 1988, he defeated Hulk Hogan to win the WWF Championship, his sole world heavyweight championship, on the first episode of The Main Event. As his WWF career wound down after WrestleMania VI in 1990, Roussimoff wrestled primarily for All Japan Pro-Wrestling, usually alongside Giant Baba. Notable title wins include: IWA Tag Titles with Michael Nader; Austral-Asian Tag Titles with Ron Miller; NWA U.S. (Tri-State) Tag Titles with Dusty Rhodes; Florida Tag Titles with Rhodes; WWF Heavyweight Title; WWF Tag Team Titles (with Tonga Fifita, aka Haku). Andre was 46 when he died in a Paris hotel room on January 28, 1993. He died from congestive heart failure, linked to his untreated Acromegaly. Andre, who'd been in France to attend his father's funeral and visit his family, wanted to be cremated. Mattel WWE Elite Collection Series 89 Robert Rudolph Remus was born in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He attended Eden Prairie High School in nearby Eden Prairie, where he wrestled and played football. He burst onto the wrestling scene in 1974 using his real name, Robert Remus in the American Wrestling Association (AWA), working for and being trained by WWE Hall of Famer Verne Gagne. The gimmick of Sgt. Slaughter is that of a former U.S. Marine who fought in the Vietnam War. Remus himself never served in the military. His arch enemy was the master of the Camel klutch, The Iron Sheik. As Sgt. Slaughter, Remus became known for his dark sunglasses, his campaign hat, and his Vietnam War-era military fatigues. In the 1980s, an alternate version of the #SgtSlaughter character was incorporated into the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toy line as well as its animated series and comic books. From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, Slaughter had success in the National Wrestling Alliance, American Wrestling Association, and the World Wrestling Federation. Slaughter captured the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship twice and received a push throughout 1985 and 1986, winning the AWA America's Heavyweight Championship by defeating Larry Zbyszko. The August 1990 invasion of Kuwait by Ba'athist Iraq triggered a political crisis that would lead to the 1991 Gulf War. Vincent Kennedy McMahon Jr wanted him to be a heel supporting the Iraqi cause. He won the WWF World Heavyweight Championship from the Ultimate Warrior and lost it when he headlined WrestleMania VII against Hulk Hogan in 1991. In 1997, Slaughter returned as WWE Commissioner and did his best to control the chaos. Mattel WWE Elite Legends Series 21 The Iron Sheik became WWE Champion the day after Christmas in 1983 when he defeated Bob Backlund at Madison Square Garden. The victory was a controversial one, as Backlund's manager Arnold Skaaland threw in the towel after Backlund refused to submit. The Iron Sheik held the title for just under a month before losing the championship to the Immortal Hulk Hogan on January 23, 1984 in one of the most famous matches of all time. Although The Iron Sheik lost, he was involved in the match that launched the career of Hollywood Hogan, which put professional wrestling in the mainstream light for the first time. A former amateur wrestler in his native Iran, The Iron Sheik was a master of the suplex, although he was best known for his crippling Camel Clutch maneuver. After losing the WWE Championship, The Iron Sheik engaged in one of the most famous and nationalistic rivalries in wrestling history when he butted heads with Sgt. Slaughter. Slaughter beat The Iron Sheik in a famous Boot Camp Match at Madison Square Garden. Soon after, The Iron Sheik moved to the tag team division and teamed with Nikolai Volkoff. The foreign pairing went on to win the World Tag Team Championship in 1985 at WrestleMania, defeating the U.S. Express. The Iron Sheik left WWE in 1988 and popped up in WCW in 1989 for a brief period. He then reappeared in WWE in 1991 by the side of former enemy Sgt. Slaughter as Colonal Mustafa. After that short stint, he reappeared again in 1997 as a manager of The Sultan. Mattel WWE Elite Series 87 In 1986, at a Minnesota gym bench pressing more than 650 plus pounds in his prime, the 323 lb 6-foot-5 Pompano Beach, Florida native Terry Szopinski met the gyms owner Joe Laurinaitis, better known as the professional wrestler Road Warrior Animal. After coming up with the ring name #TheWarlord Terry Szopinski had a brief stint in JCP, before going to Central States Wrestling. While there, he teamed with Karl Kovac and won the territory's tag team championship on June 8, 1987, in a tournament. Kovac was fired and Szopinski traveled to Japan to train. Upon coming to NWA, he formed an alliance with The Barbarian and Ivan Koloff, becoming an enemy of Dusty Rhodes and The Road Warriors until The Powers of Pain moved to WWE in 1988. Arriving as faces, The Warlord and The Barbarian aligned themselves with the mysterious Baron and set their sights on Demolition. They soon linked up with Mr. Fuji as heels. In 1990, Fuji sold them separately so that the duo wouldn't be able to take on Fuji's new clients, the Orient Express. As such, the Powers of Pain were broken up into singles wrestlers, with Barbarian being managed by Bobby Heenan while Warlord was managed by Slick. The Warlord was a nightmare for jobbers with his running powerslam and a devastating Full Nelson. Still, when it came time to battle a known entity in “The British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith, he lost his most high-profile bout to the Englishman at WrestleMania VII. Upon returning to the independent circuit in 1992, The Powers of Pain won the WWWA Tag Team Championship together before later debuting for World Championship Wrestling in 1996. During their time in WCW, they wrestled under masks as the Super Assassins and were managed by Col. Rob Parker.
