I'll be honest and say that I was pretty nervous about taking my beloved Sigma 85mm ART lens into this environment but the combination of a UV filter on the front and the plastic rain cover held in place with electrical tape did a good job at keeping out most of the water and coloured dye. Retratos de Guatemala, desde los estrechos y coloridos mercados de Antigua hasta las abarrotadas calles de los pueblos del Lago Atitlán. Un huipil amarillo con mirada atenta, un sombrero y una sonrisa sincera, un carro lleno de frutos secos que desconozco, el amor de una madre y su hija, una artesana rodeada de telas de mil colores, la curiosidad de una niña, una amable vendedora junto a montones de frutas. A veces me pregunto qué me lleva a fijarme tanto en las personas. ¿Es la cámara o siempre ha sido una curiosidad personal? Creo que ambas fuentes manan hacia el mismo río. Hacer retratos lleva consigo muchos rechazos. Y es que todo el mundo, por supuesto, tiene el derecho a no querer hacerse una foto. Faltaría más. Pero son aquellas pequeñas (grandes) charlas y esas caras de satisfacción al ver sus propios retratos las que me llenan por completo. En mis manos porto un ticket que me lleva a abrirme a las personas, a fijarme todavía más en sus ojos, en sus arrugas o en las dobladuras de sus vestimentas. Hoy me siento muy agradecido por poder conocer a tantas personas y de poder seguir peleando cada día con ilusión por ganarme la vida como fotógrafo.
