The legend of King Midas 👑🌟🍇 Hello! Today I want to talk about a Greek-Phrygian myth which probably you already know. In the post dedicated to my character Azra/Ankara, I mentioned King Midas who, according to Pausanias, founded the city. Midas (of bryges origins) was adopted by Phrygian King Gordias and the goddess Cybele. Ovid wrote about his myth in “Metamorphoses”. Midas helped and treated Silenus (Dionysus’ old schoolmaster) hospitably. The Thracian god decided to offer Midas whatever he wanted, obtaining to change everything he touched into gold. Nathaniel Hawthorne retold several Greek myths in “A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys” (1852). For this illustration, I obviously took inspiration from this version of Midas’ touch: his daughter, Zoë, hugged him for comfort, because her own garden had been destroyed by Midas’ powers but, by touching his arms, she turned into gold. I represented my character (whom I named “Zoë” referring to the legend of Midas) slowly turning into gold. Zoë/Ancyra is sitting on the throne, just like the Goddess Cybele. Through history, we know that Ancyra was occupied by the Lydians, the Persians and, in the III century BC, by the Galatians, a Celtic people who made the city one of the first tribal centres. When the city was conquered by Romans, Augustus created the province of Galatia, and Ancyra acquired its own importance. After the battle of Manzikert, in 1073, Ankara was captured by the Seljuk Turks. Before our indulgence, we took an exclusive tour of the Chinese paintings exhibition at the Frankfurt Museum of Applied Art. The tour was guided by Dr. Stephan Graf von der Schulenburg, the East-Asian curator. I am a big fan of his storytelling approach, which not only engages and provides historical context but also humanises the people and society of the past. This experience offered a nice break from the polemical online communication that fills many of my online feeds. His first name, being the city-State of Astachos (a Megarian colony), was Leon, which was romanised Leontius and translated Aslan after the Turkish conquest of Bithynia. Nicomedia had a very important role in Roman history because, during the Tetrarchy system, Diocletian made it one of his capitals. Redesign of the character Alice from my old "The Rise of Darkas" AU story~ "The Rise of Darkas" is one of the oldest and one of the craziest ideas of mine in the HTTYD fandom:D My thoughts about this began more than 5 years ago.
