It really makes a difference. I forgot to use it where sea meets sky. The cartoon was drawn by Marlena up to the horizon. {THIS IS US} This past year was the first year we can remember in the almost 19 years since we began our family that we didn’t do a professional family portrait. It pains us, as we love looking back on each year of the almost two decades of watching our kids grow. Thankfully, we have a few cute 2023 iPhone family photos from holidays and special occasions, but we definitely have 2024’s professional family portrait high on our priority list! These photos, taken November of 2022 here at our homestead, are the second time we’ve had professional portraits taken here since we purchased the acreage almost 4 years ago. The first in 2019, we hadn’t even broken ground. Prior to those, we did several annual sessions at our beloved home of 20 years in Destin. Although we love portraits at public locations, there’s something so special about having portraits made in the homes we’ve built our family and foundation on and we would encourage any family to consider doing the same. As professional photographers by trade, we’ve also been surprised & blessed by those who’ve started requesting to do photos of their own families here at Sevenfold Homestead (all kids get a free egg right out of the coop! ;). Many of you don’t know our story yet, but this property has come as a result of a lot of personal & physical sacrifice - but also SO many miracles, prayer, faith, and love. We spent all afternoon yesterday with my mom and sisters at Homestead Heritage. It was a lot of fun. It has been nearly 20 years since I’ve gone. So much has changed and grown there. Stepping back in time to 1950, when the Coral Castle was still a relatively young Florida attraction! 🏰 This mind-boggling structure was created single-handedly by the Latvian-American eccentric Edward Leedskalnin, who dedicated more than 28 years to building his limestone masterpiece. Each stone weighs several tons, and the castle features all kinds of shapes, from slab walls to a crescent moon, a water fountain, and even a sundial! Rumor has it that Ed used reverse magnetism or supernatural abilities to move and carve the stones. Can you believe it? 🧲💪🔨 Ed originally built the Coral Castle, then known as "Ed's Place", in the remote location of Florida City around 1923. As development in the area began, Ed decided to protect his privacy and transported the entire castle 10 miles north to its current location outside Homestead, Florida—a process that took him three whole years! Talk about dedication! 👏 Fast-forward to today, the castle is open Thursday to Sunday, offering guided tours to anyone eager to witness this testament to one man's persistence and ingenuity. The legacy of Ed and his Coral Castle continues to mesmerize, making us proud of our Sunshine State's rich and unique history. I made a Tote Basket! I love tote baskets so I was very happy to make this. It still needs some finishing work, but I'm loving the color and design. I have my hands full right now (physically and financially) with 5 weaving projects on various looms, but I very much want to continue with basket weaving. I see basket weaving as being nicely compatible with loom weaving and sewing. I can weave my own fabric liners, bread cloths (for bread baskets), etc. And, of course, baskets can be used for holding yarn. To this day, memories of the Veyo Pool always seem to find their way into casual conversation when spending time with the family. Now, Braken has extended this family tradition to her children, and usually spends a couple of days a month relaxing in the cool oasis of the Veyo Pool. The Veyo Pool was founded in 1927 by James and Caroline Cottam, who obtained the land through the Homestead Act. The couple, along with some ingenious foresight, built a simple cement pool, fed by a nearby 83-degree hot spring in a part of the Basin and Range/Colorado Plateau transition zone where there are higher concentrations of geothermal activity.
