Wine writer Thomas Stockley, a columnist for The Seattle Times, and his wife, Peggy, were killed on Alaska Airlines Flight 261 when it crashed off the coast of California. The crash killed all 88 on board including two pilots, three flight attendants, and 83 passengers. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board concluded inadequate maintenance led to excessive wear and eventual failure of the airplane’s pitch control. Flight 261 plunged into a near-vertical nosedive, inverted, then fell upside-down towards the Pacific Ocean. James Manning Colman was a former Georgia legislator. He moved to Renton, WA in 1876 with his wife Clara and their four children. Colman was elected county commissioner in 1880 and again in 1882. On February 8, 1886, Colman was murdered after leaving his home by rowboat. His decomposed body, along with Wilbur Patten’s was found on March 7th, three miles south of where his boat was found. George Miller was accused of the crime but the jury could not agree on a verdict. A second trial was held in Seattle but that jury also failed to agree. Finally, after a third trial, the jury found Miller guilty and was sentenced to hang. Miller received a stay of execution a few months later and was released. Briggs remarried in 1877 to Sarah Griffiths and had 6 children. In January 1907, their son, Clyde Briggs, married Victoria Erickson. According to The News Tribune Briggs “deserted her” after living together for only two days. In April that same year, Mrs. Briggs was appointed guardian of Clyde alleging he was “weak-minded and unable to manage his own affairs.” During that same time, attorneys for Erickson began an action for “non-support.” When the complaint was served to Mrs. Briggs she replied that hypnotism had been used and asked for the marriage to be dissolved. She claimed Lucas O’Brien, who brought Erickson to Seattle, influenced her son to marry her. Thomas Mercer was born on March 11, 1813 to parents Aaron and Jane Mercer. He was the eldest of 14 children. His father manufactured woolen clothes and blankets at his factory in Ohio. Mercer grew up in the factory, becoming foreman at age 14. He operated the factory until 1834 when the family moved to Princeton, Illinois. There, the family left factory life and began farming. Mercer married Nancy Brigham in 1838. They with their 4 daughters left Illinois for Oregon in 1851. Unfortunately, Mrs. Mercer fell ill in The Dalles and passed away in the Cascades. Mercer and his 4 children settled in Salem for a brief period before moving to Seattle in 1853. He built a home and continued his work as a farmer. He was appointed the first commissioner of King County in 1854. He was elected probate judge in 1858 and held his position for 10 years. He passed away on May 25, 1898. Part I: William and Elizabeth Lappeus were born in New York. They had one son and three daughters. They moved to Portland in 1870. William passed away from epilepsy in October, 1878. Elizabeth passed away a month later. At 18, their son James Henry Lappeus joined a regiment of New York Volunteers assigned to occupy San Francisco during the Mexican-American War. When the war ended in 1848, James headed to the gold fields and started working as a saloon keeper. During that time, James may have been associated with a gang of criminals and war veterans, known as The Hounds. The Hounds were an anti-foreigner group that used brutal tactics to drive Mexican, Peruvian, and Chilean immigrants from the gold fields. In 1849, the Hounds attacked an area called “Little Chile,” savagely beating and raping occupants. They destroyed tents, stole valuables, and eventually starting firing their weapons indiscriminately, killing several people, including a child. The citizens rose up in protest and demanded the cities Mayor, Thaddeus Leavenworth, take action. He denounced the Hounds and deputized 230 men to arrest them. A little over 24 hours after the attack, 20 men had been arrested. After the arrests, the Hounds disbanded and were unable to regroup. Emily Frances Lindsey was born on August 19, 1835 in Illinois. She married Calvin Perry Wineset on January 30, 1851 and had 5ish children. Emily and Calvin started for Oregon in the spring of 1854 from Texas. They first landed in Shasta Co. California where Calvin did some mining during the gold rush. In 1863 they arrived in Walla Walla, WA where Calvin built up an extensive business as a wagon maker. They eventually made their way to Portland and Oregon City. Emily died on September 6, 1874 at the age of 39. Calvin remarried Lydia Jane Forrester and had 7ish more children. They arrived in Portland 6 months later. John was a carpenter and contractor. He started the first planing mill in Portland in 1859, the same year Oregon became a state. Harriette and John had two children together, Myrtle O. And Nellie F. Harriette died in 1869 at the age of 34. James Bowles Stephens was an Oregon pioneer. He operated one of the first ferries across the Willamette River and was the founder of East Portland. His father, Emmor Stephens was the first person buried at Lone Fir Cemetery. James married Elizabeth Walker in 1830 while living in Kentucky. They had seven children together and moved to Oregon in 1844. They left several years later during the California Gold Rush but returned shorty after in 1850. Before leaving Portland for California, James’ father Emmor passed away. He was buried on the Stephens’ land in 1846. James sold the land to Colburn Barrell in 1854 with the promise that Colburn would maintain his father’s gravesite. Shortly after the sale, Barrell’s ship the Gazelle exploded, killing his partner and several others. He buried them next to Emmor and created Lone Fir Cemetery (then Mt. Crawford Cemetery). Elizabeth Stephens died on April 26, 1887. James followed soon after in 1889. Their headstone is one of the most recognizable, not only for its carving of their likeness but also for their interesting epitaph. It reads: HERE WE LIE BY CONSENT.
