Please join Historic Congressional Cemetery and the Daughters of the American Revolution to dedicate a new sign for Belva Lockwood! The event is this Sunday, May 19th, at 10 a.m. Belva Lockwood is one of the most notable individuals interred at Congressional Cemetery. A lawyer, activist, and women’s rights pioneer, she authored a sterling legal career, blazing a trail for women in American society. The first woman to legally run for president, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. To celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women, we hope that you will join us on the morning of May 19th, her death anniversary, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. There will be some brief remarks at the gravesite, rain or shine! Thank you to the Daughters of the American Revolution for the new historic signage to highlight Belva Lockwood’s achievements and life. #history #belvalockwood #lockwood #congressionalcemetery #historiccongressionalcemetery #womenshistory #dar #daughtersoftheamericanrevolution #dc #washingtondc #washingtondcevents #presidentialhistory

Congressional Cemetery welcomes Gabby Welsh, @bonesandgravestones as our Spring Events and Digital Content Intern. Following a decade-long career as a Stage Manager in Chicago’s Theatre Industry, Gabby moved to the D.C. area with her husband, Mike, two years ago. She first joined the Congressional Cemetery community last year, by taking photos for Find a Grave and attending our book club, Tombs and Tomes. In the Fall, she contributed two posts to our Blog about Body Snatching in the District and volunteered at a few events. A long-time explorer of cemeteries, Gabby is particularly drawn to stories about local cemetery customs, people misunderstood during their lifetime, creative historians and communities brought together by tragedy. In her personal life, Gabby enjoys books, antique malls, jigsaw puzzles and DIY projects around her 96-year-old house in Riverdale, Maryland. She looks forward to collaborating with the Congressional team on further events and digital content! #cemetery #congressionalcemetery #cemeteriesofdc #Welcomeaboard #historiccongressionalcemetery #cemeteryintern

Posted @withregram • @congcemetery Happy Indigenous People's Day! Congressional Cemetery is honored to be the final resting place for several influential Native American historical figures and tribal members from over ten different nations. Among them are the graves shared here-- those of Choctaw Chief Push-ma-ta-ha, Apache Chief Taza, and Choctaw Chief Ha-tchoo-tuc-knee [Peter Pitchlynn]. Chief Push-ma-ta-ha, a war hero and an advocate for his people; Chief Taza, a leader in a time of difficulty for his people; and Peter Pitchlynn a controversial but nonetheless important leader and delegate. The tales of these men are so rich and fascinating that they deserve more than a single social media post to do them justice. Dayle Dooley's story with Historic Congressional Cemetery traces back to the early 1980s when she embarked on a captivating journey of genealogical research centred around her own family history. Her connection to HCC deepened over the years, and her dedication to preserving its rich heritage became evident. Among the remarkable individuals who have devoted themselves to this historic site, Dayle stands out as the staff member with the longest tenure. In 2007, Dayle assumed the role of a docent, sharing her knowledge and passion for the cemetery's historical significance with visitors from near and far. Her extensive expertise in the subject matter, coupled with her engaging storytelling, has made her an invaluable asset to HCC. Following her retirement in 2009, Dayle's profound connection to the cemetery compelled her to continue contributing to its preservation and she took on the role of part-time Archivist, which she still does today. The cemetery holds a special place in her heart, not only due to its historical significance but also because it serves as the final resting place of her great-great grandparents. Her dedication to the preservation of HCC's historical legacy, combined with her deep-rooted familial ties, makes her an extraordinary advocate for the cemetery and an indispensable custodian of its past. #CongressionalCemetery #archives #cemeteryarchives #archivist #cemeteryhistory #historiccongressionalcemetery #dccemeteries #taphophile

WALK WITH ME featuring Congressional Cemetery #historicalwashingtondc Congressional Cemetery was founded in 1807. It was turned over to Christ Church March 1812. This cemetery was a stop on the Underground Railroad. There are several prominent African Americans buried here such as former Mayor Marion Barry and Alain Locke, the first African American man awarded a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University. Here also rests many Euro-American, Caucasian families some which were prominent in Washington, DC politics. Others which undoubtedly assisted with the abolitionist movement. Walking tours are available. Beautifully manicured with birds singing, several families were walking and having lunch at Congressional Cemetery while practicing social distance. ___________ #walkwithme #gowithme #dcmustsee #dcliving #congressionalcemetery #soaah #historicalplace #associationforthepreservationofhistoriccongressionalcemetery #dchistory #africanamericanhistory #historiccongressionalcemetery #naturaltrustforhistoricpreservation #congressionalcemeteryendowment #lifeduringcovid19 #washingtondc #districtofcolumbia #undergroundrailroad #abolitionisthistory #freedomforallamericans #mustseedc #explorewashingtondc #explorehistory #dcyelp #traveldc #throughmyeyes #blackhistoryfacts #americanhistory #dcnature #studyofafricanamericanhistory

I threw a party in the Historical Congressional Cemetery and helped raise nearly $18,000! I won't pretend this was my easiest event - the bartenders never showed up (and now I've had to file a lawsuit), a performer's car died in the middle of the cemetery, and I woke up to a bunch of complaints and death threats because the open bar didn't last more than two hours. Thankfully, my amazing friends stepped in during the event to save my butt - they helped me bartend, helped assuage the crowd, and just kept things enjoyable, rather than disastrous. I owe them big time! #halloween #washingtondc #dc #cemetery #party #charity #firebreather #historiccongressionalcemetery #costume #cosplay #dogsofinstagram #fire #acrobatics #aerialsilks #spooky #givingback #spookyseason
