Mapusa District and Sessions Court in Goa on Friday acquitted former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal of charges of raping his female colleague in a luxury hotel in North Goa in 2013. Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant, though, said the state government will challenge the acquittal in the high court. Speaking to reporters, Sawant added: "We will not tolerate any injustice to be meted out to the women in Goa.” The timeline Arrested on Nov. 30, 2013 by the Goa Crime Branch — it filed its chargesheet in February 2014 — Tejpal was granted bail on Jul. 1, 2014 by the Supreme Court. On Sept. 28, 2017, the trial court framed charges against him under various sections of the IPC. The trial commenced in March 2018 but got interrupted due to several factors, one of them being Tejpal seeking a discharge in the case, for which he first moved the sessions court, then the high court and later the SC. In August 2019, the SC declined his plea and ordered that the trial be held in-camera (not open to the public) and be completed in six months. The trial finally began on Dec. 7, 2020, and the survivor was examined and cross-examined for an entire month till Jan. 7, 2021, by physical appearance and through videoconferencing. The prosecution examined 71 witnesses and the defence had four, including family members of both the accused and the survivor. Toolkit case: Environmental Activist seeks anticipatory bail On March 3rd, the Goa bench of Bombay High Court had granted transit anticipatory bail to environmental activist Subham Kar Chaudhuri, providing him protection till March 12th in order to enable him to approach the competent court in Delhi for availing appropriate reliefs. He has now approached a Delhi Court seeking anticipatory bail in the ‘toolkit’ case shared by climate activist Greta Thunberg. The case was registered by Cyber Crime Cell of Delhi Police in connection with the ongoing farmers’ protests. Greta Thunberg had shared the ‘toolkit’ to lend her support to the farmer’s agitation near Delhi borders against the Centre’s three new agriculture laws. The toolkit has been cited by some critics as a ‘proof’ of her intentions to fuel protests in India. Chaudhuri, in his plea, said he was a resident of Goa since August last year and has no connection to the toolkit case. He also said that he was an ardent environmentalist, actively involved in seeking ecologically sustainable solutions through an environment-oriented policy making approach. The other suspects in the case had also been granted transit anticipatory bail. Nikita Jacob was granted transit bail for three weeks by the principal Bench of Bombay High Court after which she moved Delhi Sessions Court for anticipatory bail. Muluk was granted transit bail for 10 days by the Aurangabad Bench of Bombay High Court and this protection was extended till March 9 by the Delhi Sessions Court in her anticipatory bail plea.
