Day 31 - This guy! #braintumorawareness #GoGrayInMay On December 2, 2019, a mass was found on his brain. His first surgery was on December 11, 2019. Second surgery for a recurrent tumor was May 10, 2022. His third tumor was found on January 16, 2023, and it is inoperable due to being too close to his mobility, speech, and optic nerve. Mike has known he has a fatal brain cancer with no cure for 4-1/2 years. Today is day 1,642. It’s been 502 days since we were told he is inoperable. And yet, he remains happy in life. Can our phones 📱cure cancer?! A collaboration between @ourbrainbankforglioblastoma, harvard scientists and neurosurgeons 🧠, and neuro-oncologists at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute looks into this. The current progression tracking of patients with glioblastoma can often be infrequent and unreliable 👎️. Could passive data from our smartphones, such as physical activity levels, sleep patterns, language complexity changes, and distance traveled, be the solution? 🧐 Dr. Jay makes a great point in bringing up the fact that if the patient is disabled from the tumor, they *CAN'T use their phone. Day 30 - How long can a brain tumor go undetected? #braintumorawareness #GoGrayInMay A brain tumor can go undetected for several years, depending on the type of tumor and its growth rate. Benign brain tumors, which grow slowly, can remain inconspicuous for many years until they become large enough to affect brain function and cause symptoms. Meningiomas, a common type of brain cancer in adults, can also go undetected for long periods of time. Glioblastomas, a type of brain tumor, can sometimes grow for almost a year before symptoms appear. Some patients may experience gradual changes, such as issues with language, concentration, or coordination and strength on one side of the body. However, others may not experience any noticeable symptoms for months or years. In Mike’s case, his symptoms showed as a gradual personality change for at least one year before his tumor was found. His eyes and face on one side (looking back at photos) showed signs of drooping every so often 12-15 months before it was found. Amanda and Jesse went on a walk down the hall today and she asked “can we go to the window to look at the view?” She stood there for a few minutes taking in the beauty, before making the journey back to her room. She is excited to read all the messages so many of you have sent in the coming days. Day 25 - Support System #BrainTumorAwarenessMonth #GoGrayInMay "Everyone needs a support system, be it family, friends, coworkers, therapists, or religious leaders. We cannot do life alone and expect to keep mentally, emotionally, and spiritually healthy". Support comes in different ways. It can be a simple phone call or text to see how you’re doing. It can be a visit, a card in the mail, including you in their life with an invitation even though they already know you may not be able to attend, and even someone trying to give you hope by sending an article they found, coming by to help with a home project, or even sit with you for no other reason but to spend time with you. When you go through something that changes your life with such magnitude, having good people who love and care for you and who step up whether you ask for help or they offer, is so important. Thankfully we have a solid amount of family and friends who have been our support system from the beginning of this journey. May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month, which is something I didn’t know until recently. Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive brain tumor - also something I didn’t know until recently. If you didn’t know these facts either, you’re not alone. The scope and severity of brain tumors is widely unrecognized. My sudden passion for raising awareness and funding for brain tumor research comes in the wake of my Dad’s diagnosis with brain cancer in the form of glioblastoma. He has bravely endured a biopsy-only craniotomy (brain surgery), devoted himself to a ketogenic diet, and started his first round of chemo-radiation. My Dad is my safety net, hero, and best friend. There is no cure for glioblastoma. The amount of money going toward brain tumor research is minimal compared to other forms of cancer. This week I #Head2Hill with the @NatlBrainTumorSociety along with my fellow brain tumor advocates to urge Congress to support increased funding for brain tumor research and treatment. Rudy passed away in January, 2,5 years after being diagnosed with Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), which is the most common type of primary malignant brain tumours in adults. Glioblastoma can affect anybody at any age, although it is more commonly found in people ages 45 to 70. There is still no cure for Glioblastoma. Treatments focus on removing or shrinking the tumour to reduce symptoms; however, they are not successful in long-term survival, making Glioblastoma a devastating diagnosis with most patients surviving an average of 12 to 18 months after diagnosis. Finding a cure needs research and research needs funding! Raised funds will go to “The Laboratory for Precision Cancer Medicine” in KU Leuven: “At the LPCM we contribute to the battle against brain tumors. Our multidisciplinary team translational researchers wants, in close cooperation with the physicians of the University Hospitals Leuven, to support the development of newer and more efficient therapies for patients diagnosed with a brain tumor. This is my father (Mike). Who passed on to his next big race on June 2, 2021, following a battle with #glioblastoma4 brain cancer. My father (Mike) had a love of all things with an engine and was especially fond of drag racing. A wizard at math, he was often sought out for his skills as a crew chief for several amateur and professional super stock racing teams; to him, it was just a hobby. As a kid, he often took me to car shows and drag races with him and his crew. I have grown a huge passion for cars and it is now my hobby. I own a 2018 Dodge RT Challenger, which is my first car while his first car was a 1970 Dodge Challenger. His passion and the hobby that he introduced me to have opened so many doors for me. It has allowed me to work in the field of automotive technology and introduced me to a lot of new people who share the same passion. His diagnosis is the first time my family or I have heard of glioblastoma. Which is why I’m starting this group to spread the word. Sometimes we need a bridge and sometimes we are the bridge. •There are times in our lives when we could use a little help while other times we are offered the opportunity to help others. •My friend Kelly was a bridge when I was diagnosed with late stage cancer. Just her presence made me feel a sense of calm.
