My most treasured possession is probably what call my Grandad's funeral book. He was a wheelwright, undertaker and carpenter and this ledger details the work he did, complete with prices. It's amazing! The entries in this book begin in 1912 and ends in 1964 ๐ There is a gap between 1914 and 1921. The most amazing line in the whole book is just 1 simple, very understated line placed between details of a 1941 funeral and a 1946 funeral. "Started Business after 6 years War Service" This is the man who went to Belgium with the British Expeditionary Force in WW1 and was shot in the head a few days after he arrived, was repatriated thru Ypres to recover, and then returned to the front line before the end of the war.. Then went on to do 6 years in WW11.. I remember he suffered from ptsd but I adored him, and he me. I'm starting to make a journal to honour his memory. I doubt it will do him the justice he deserves. #12 'Good Mourning' by Elizabeth Meyer An overly privileged socialite tells a story of her 3-year stint at a famous rich-people funeral home in New York. Elizabeth decided to join the funeral business after losing her father. Her family and friends are very unsupportive and assume Elizabeth is simply trying to rebel against her mother. However, for Elizabeth, working at a funeral home provided the healing she needed and allowed her to find passion in helping families find closure after lived one's passing. Elizabeth retells stories of services, drama, and personal life. She got body fluids on her $600 Gucci heels when retrieving a body. She had a body with missing brain. She lost a body of a political figure. There are definitely entertaining stories in there. The book does have mean girl vibes to it. Elizabeth describes Kardashians as "quasi celebrities", makes sure to remind people how she has famous friends, and insists she couldn't have had an affair with a man because he was "pudgy". I do not recommend this as an audiobook. The narrarator is very distressing. She uses the weirdest voices and accents. But as an actual book, it's a different subject matter.
