#TheHighlanders was the fourth serial of Doctor Who’s 1966/67 season. It was broadcast as four twenty-five minute episodes from 17th December #1966 to 7th January #1967. The story was the last of the “pure historical” genre of Doctor Who television stories, which had been a regular feature of the show since its inception, until Black Orchid in 1982. It was also the first appearance of #FrazerHines as #JamieMcCrimmon, who would become the #SecondDoctor’s longest serving companion. All four episodes are currently missing from the BBC Archives. A full audio recording of the complete adventure (with linking narration by Frazer Hines) has been released on various formats down the years, including this brand new edition for #VinylWeek which will be available exclusively at #HMV stores beginning 15th June 2024. Presented in a widespine sleeve, these two 140g translucent discs (one red and one blue) feature the complete original soundtrack. Two fully illustrated inner sleeves supply Radio Times-style billings for each episode. History books don’t always tell the whole story. Certainly there is no record of an episode that occurred when the Scots, led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, were defeated by the English at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. And the presence at the time of a blue Police Box on the Scottish moors seems to have escaped the notice of most eye-witnesses. The Highlanders sets the record straight. Just two days! Here we have the dashing Jamie McCrimmon and the cosmic hobo that is the Second Doctor. They are one of the great duos in Who. I consider Patrick Troughton one of the best Doctors, old & new. Matt Smith, whom played the Eleventh Doctor took inspiration from him in his portrayal of the Time Lord. Some of my favorite stories that I’d recommend are “Enemy of the World” & “The Mind Robber”. The later I’d also say is one of the best episodes period. I have such a love of this era of Who, when it’s at its best it gives me Twilight Zone vibes. Also if you are a fan of Outlander, you have Jamie McCrimmon to thank for that.

It’s a uniquely exotic setting that’s ripe for strong storytelling especially considering the history behind the titular emperor himself but Nigel Robinson’s script is so by the book that there’s not a shred of anything new or exciting going on here. There’s so much going on in the plot that everything becomes muddled and outside of the TARDIS team, none of the characters established are remotely interesting. It’s like the narrative wanted to replicate everything strong about a similar story “Marco Polo” but in the process forgot the heart that made said story good backed by a silly conclusion that doesn’t feel earned given a lot of the nastier elements through the audio. It’s also interesting how little Robinson’s writing channels this TARDIS team properly. The Second Doctor and Jamie played by Frazer Hines are are so barely in this story that they’re not worth mentioning and while Deborah Watling’s performance is decent, the way Victoria is portaryed is so far out of line that she feels like someone almost entirely different in character. Her selflessness, naivete, and mercy are pushed to the extreme to the point of foolishness and her vocals in those moments comes off as hysterical to the point where it grates on you really fast. ‘Emperor of Eternity’ then is a major disappointment for what it could’ve been and a lackluster story for this TARDIS team. Today’s Tardis leap is to 1967’s “The Enemy of the World,” where Patrick Troughton plays Dr. Who and the snaky Salamander, an evil genius trying to take over the world in 2018! All but one part of this 6-parter was lost until 2013 when the film canisters shipped around the world were located in an un-airconditioned tv station storage unit in Jos, Nigeria (swipe to the last pic). Great fun to see what the costumer thought we’d be wearing in 2018 — lots of buckles and high-collared leather. I’m consecutively watching all the existing Patrick Troughton episodes of Dr. Who. These images are from “The Ice Warriors,” about halfway through the talented Mr. Troughton’s run in the role. As of this post, only one story from each of his three seasons has not been located or animated using fans’ original audio recordings taped off the telly (something my brother used to have me do when he wasn’t home to watch his favorite shows back before VCRs). I have to say the animations are nice to have but don’t hold a candle to seeing Mr. Troughton and the rest performmng “live.” And the rep Classic Who has of being poorly produced and looking cheap is BS. Most of these episodes could stand up next to any sci-fi produced in the 50s and 60s. Some of the filmed sequences are breathtakingly beautiful.
