I see this a lot from photographers trying to sell posing guides. No shade to the photographers that pose their families, that’s an art and a skill that’s valuable and worthwhile. But so is a documentary approach. Just because it makes you uncomfortable to consider not posing your clients doesn’t make it the “wrong” approach for the photographers who make better pictures this way. OUT OF STUDIO! Okay folks, I am headed out of the country - to Australia in fact, to join my fellow filmmakers on the @unfiltered.au retreat! We accomplished a banging party last night for my eldest - thank you to all the parents that brought their end of the camp week tired kids and celebrated with us - it really was such a great party! Brian finished the night off by dislocating his shoulder - happy to have had his brother and dad still hanging out to maneuver him onto our new counter top to pop that baby back in. Want to know the best part of a 16 hour plane flight from Saudi to the USA? Getting to finally sit on the deck of our cabin in the mountains of North Carolina and JUST RELAX. Yay! As this post goes up, I've probably just landed back in the USA after a loooonnnggg flight. But before a summer spent at the cabin begins, I have a few stops to make — specifically family films in Texas and Michigan, as well as eating as much Lupe Tortilla (tex/mex) food in Texas as I can fit in my belly. Here’s what I love the most about what I do. It’s not the end result. It’s not the photos or the film although don’t get me wrong, I do truly love both. But what I love more than anything, is the relationships I’ve built with the families that I’ve worked with. It’s staying late after the session and having deep conversations about parenthood. It’s listening to their struggles with their lunatic toddler, and sharing stories back about my own lunatic toddler. It’s reassuring them that things will be ok, and that they are doing everything right, and that one day they’ll sleep through the night again. If I had to give up the end result, I probably could. I joined @filminglifeacademy two years ago in search of a community of family filmmakers. My business had been offering family films for three years but, when you’re on the leading edge of a growing trend, this niche can feel downright lonely. For years it felt like hacking a path for myself through a jungle. Spanning the globe, Filming Life members are a growing and courageous tribe of trailblazers. We are passionate storytellers convinced that our own and our clients memories deserve sound and movement. In this community I’ve made some really dear friends and been given opportunities as a Filming Life Pro to partner with our community leaders in seeing filmmakers flourish…whether through a podcast interview (linked in bio), hosting a group for newcomers, posting tutorials or sharing a little inspiration along the way. We got our Christmas tree last weekend! I love Herrick Tree Farm - the Meyer first took me there to do their family session. It’s close, though they were low on tall trees to cut yourself they had a nice collection for pre-cut, and they had hot chocolate, AND these really cool Christmas pompoms. … I never did ask what they are called. Anyway totally tagging our tree early next year there! And though I’m not in the video (though you can hear me 🤣) I did find some clever spots to set my camera down to take a photo of us all! Week 4: INSIDE SOMETHING This weeks theme of “inside something” is probably very achievable if you live with small humans or cute pets! I’ve noticed lots of ridiculous spaces my boys manage to get inside. This morning my 3yo simply HAD to ride his bike under the outdoor table. It’s a fascinating view on the world....literally exploring the space your body can fit inside. It’s all relative hey! My advice for this week is to think like your subject, whether it be a toddler or a fur-baby.....get down at their level. I mean literally hit the deck, bend those knees and get down low. Remember being a kid and viewing the world upside a lot. (Or was that just me 🤣) maybe do something upside down to warm up the creativity. But shoot from no higher than the height of your subjects eyes. It’s a great and new view for us giant humans. OR....maybe YOU’RE inside something shoot outwards. Get amongst the flowers with this weeks theme of FLOWERS in the 52-week project. I’m currently editing this very fabulous families film @natashapauli and stumbled on these little people fossicking amongst the flowers in their stunning native gardens. Perfect on theme! When you have a family film created, the package also includes photos....you definitely need something hardcopy for your memories too ♥️
