Cormorant Island There is an island in the middle of the Willamette with a dead tree inhabited by a flock of Double Crested Cormorants. One of my favorite things to do is watch them at dusk when they all gather in the water after a long day of fishing. As soon as the sun sets, one by one they pat the water with their wings as they get ready for take off, then circle around the dead tree until they find a branch suitable for roosting. At the end of it some fights always break out as there are only so many limbs. The whole spectacle, although just a bedtime routine, appears to be a choreographed ballet I’ve dubbed “The Dance of the Cormorants.” Upon research I’ve learned that their guano is what killed the tree. I bet it would make great fertilizer since they eat so many fish, but alas. There is such a thing as too much. Neon Nectar & the Popper Pollinators My grandma Helen always had beautiful hanging flower baskets. They were choice and brought her so much joy. Fuchsias were a staple which I referred to as “poppers” and would proceed to pop open the unopened blooms despite her scolding. This memory and an affection for hummingbirds inspired this piece. Did you know Anna’s Hummingbirds get their name from a French courtier whose husband was an amateur ornithologist even though they are exclusively a New World bird? I wonder what they were called before. Anyone know? Another fun fact: they didn’t become year round residents of the PNW until the mid 20th century due to people planting bright ornamentals in their gardens. Hard to imagine life without them and their CRAZY calls. There’s a lot of communication going on there. I really do adore them.
