The original cast and families of Eric Monte and Mike Evans are speaking out against the upcoming Good Times remake set to premiere on Netflix in April. Mixed reactions have surfaced online after the release of the trailer for the animated series. John Amos and Bernadette Stanis shared their thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter, expressing disappointment in the new portrayal of their classic show. Stanis commented, “They figured, if you put us in there, it wouldn’t look so bad.” Good Times first aired in February 1974, marking 2024 as its 50th anniversary. Stanis added, “A lot of times, you use a certain name to open up the door for a new show. That could be what it is. But I’m sure a lot of people will be a little confused at first because they have to think that it’s us.” In a 2006 interview with Annette John-Hall of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Eric Monte revealed his controversial history with the industry, alleging that the late Norman Lear stole his idea for The Jeffersons and signed a deal with Monte’s agent behind his back. Monte sued his agent, Lear, CBS, and ABC in 1977 and was offered a one million dollar settlement. He initially declined but was forced to accept after his lawyers threatened to quit. Monte claimed he was blacklisted and unable to sell more scripts. He worked as a writer on the original Good Times, which he co-created with the late Mike Evans, who played Lionel Jefferson on The Jeffersons. It’s about the Evans family and their lives growing up in a poor, black neighborhood in inner-city Chicago. Throughout its six season run, the main cast of Good Times featured the likes of Esther Rolle as Florida Evans, @officialjohnamos as James Evans, Ja’Net DuBois as Willona Woods, Ralph Carter as Michael Evans, @thelmaofgoodtimes as Thelma Evans, Jimmie Walker as J.J. Evans, Johnny Brown as Nathan Bookman, @janetjackson as Penny Gordon and Ben Powers as Keith Anderson.
