Geothermal energy is a valuable energy resource being utilized by more and more tribes. It is produced by drilling into the ground to harness the power of hot water reservoirs below the earth's surface. Most geothermal reservoirs in the U.S. are in the Western deserts, where for many tribes, choosing how to implement geothermal energy is an important discussion. Especially when it comes to drilling locations, which must be carefully chosen to preserve sacred sites and native animal habitats. This is why it is critical for Native people to determine when and where these large-scale energy projects are implemented. Hydropower, which uses the natural flow of water to generate electricity, currently accounts for about 6.2% of total U.S. electricity generation. That means it's the largest source of renewable power in the country. Hydropower, also called hydroelectric power, also offers a clean, renewable, and affordable alternative to the diesel generators many tribal members must use to power their homes. According to a 2022 report by the U.S. Energy Department’s Office of Indian Energy, nearly 17,000 tribal homes are without electricity and must use generators for essential heating and power. As a lawyer, he conducts legal research on topics affecting natural resource and energy and water planning efforts. From endangered salmon issues in the Pacific Northwest to oil spill restoration in the Gulf of Mexico, he has assisted federal agencies in navigating environmental laws to develop scientifically sound and legally defensible management plans, programs, and strategies. He has contributed to national endeavors such as the DOI’s initiative on adaptive management. Internationally, he worked with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection for the Republic of Georgia, conducting stakeholder meetings and developing statutory amendments to strengthen the laws and regulations of its protected areas. As a Principal Environmental Project Manager with HDR, he assists his clients in meeting their environmental missions and regulatory requirements. Mike currently serves as the President of NAEP and leads the biological resources working group. Last week, several FLC staff and volunteers attended the Public Service Commission’s (PSC) listening session in Missoula for NorthWestern Energy’s 2023 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). The IRP will determine how energy is produced for the majority of our municipalities over the next 20 years. Unfortunately, as it stands now, the plan fails to adequately address the climate crisis and increases Montana's reliance on expensive, polluting fossil fuels. At the listening session, the PSC faced a room full of Montanans who expressed deep concern about the IRP and asked the PSC to reject the plan and push NorthWestern Energy toward clean and affordable energy. Missoula’s listening session was no outlier; the majority of commenters in other Montana communities where hearings were held (Great Falls, Helena, Billings, and Butte) shared similar opinions - that the current IRP does not work for Montanans. Montanans want an energy plan that protects our pocketbooks, families, and futures. It is long past time for NorthWestern Energy to acknowledge that, and to follow through on their promise to “deliver a bright future” by transitioning to clean and affordable energy NOW.
