One of my most FAVORITE things to do is to take the boat up into the Edisto River on a sunny day ☀️ to my special shark 🦈 tooth 🦷 “honey hole” and dig in the sand for treasures. I recently heard from Robby Maynor, author of SC Novel Prize winner THE BIG GAME IS EVERY NIGHT (@hubcitywriters) and a program director at @conservationleague, who lives two miles upstream of the proposed site. “The site once held a coal-fired plant that operated from 1962 until 2013 that polluted the air of the surrounding Canadys community and the water of the Edisto River through water withdrawals for cooling and dirty coal ash ponds located along the river. Fish in the Edisto River still contain notoriously high amounts of mercury. Now, after a short hiatus, the power companies are looking to build one of the largest natural gas plants in the country here, perpetuating a reckless pattern of environmental injustice, and further degrading one of the most significant natural resources in the Southeast.” Local organizations have arranged a “Rally for the Edisto” to take place April 7th at Colleton State Park from 2-5 with an optional paddle past the site of the old coal plant. This is a very early Colonial hatchet head that colonist sold to American Indians from 1670 when the first settlers to South Carolina/Charleston arrived. I found this many years ago on the banks of the Edisto River at New London/Willtown/Willtown Bluff, on my great aunt's plantation. It has a curved blade to be used for hollowing out logs to become canoes that the Indians used. There is still black soot on it as well as a redish paint. It is heavy and barely holding together. You do not see anything like this today. I love it, knowing the history and age. It is 5.5 inches long, 3-3.5 wide and about 1.5 inches thick. I love museum quality things! And, things of local interest.

The Edisto River is the longest free-flowing black water river in the United States. This beautiful river ranks as one of the most beautiful in the country, ambling for 250 miles from the Sandhills through cypress swamps and floodplain forests to the rich coastal estuary of the Ashepoo/Combahee/Edisto Basin. Along its path, visitors will encounter internationally renowned sanctuaries for birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and rare plants. This river is also home to the threatened Atlantic sturgeon that is absent from most of the state's rivers. It is also a vital cultural, recreational, and economic hub for the rural communities that surround it. At this moment, a proposed large gas-fired power plant threatens to permanently damage the Edisto and its surrounding ecosystems. This would require the construction of a gas pipeline through the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest remaining undeveloped wetlands and uplands ecosystems along the Atlantic Coast. On Tuesday, February 27th, there will be a demonstration at the Blatt Building in Columbia to oppose any legislation or relaxing of regulations that would allow for this short-sighted and disastrous decision. The entire system of watersheds of our region are under threat from exploitation along our rivers, in our wetlands, and in the deep off of our shores. It was a rough time physically and mentally, and this ring gave me something to concentrate on other than the panic of the unknown(now I know the joint and body pain is due to rheumatoid arthritis, but it's pretty scary when you're experiencing it when it's still unexplained). I looked for weeks for the perfect piece of Pilot Mountain turquoise- I've admired it for its deep blues and teals against caramel matrix, plus it's from Mineral County in Nevada, and I do love a good piece of American turquoise(no offense to Hubei or Golden Hills, of course!). This one was cut by John Hartman and I love the way the stone's design looks like flowers! I set it on a comfy double band and trimmed it with beaded trim. I was able to enjoy this ring for months, until I was officially diagnosed with RA and put on Prednisone lol. *Spoiler alert, weight gain with Prednisone is a thing, I can attest to it* Now the ring won't fit my finger, so I decided to offer it for sale so someone else can enjoy its beauty. I hate that it sits in my jewelry box unworn! Size 7.75. I'm offering it for $172 including shipping. Givhans Ferry State Park is located off off Hwy 61. I stopped by last week on my way back to Charleston. It's a peaceful park, with a new walking path. The boat dock was quiet during my visit. This would be a nice spot to kayak or throw a line in the water. Here's your winter view of the Edisto River.
