Found this beautiful big guy on #worldturtleday in need of help on a construction site. In attempts to escape the silt fence around what was his home, he managed to perfectly wedge himself between some rocks. He was released on the opposite side of the fence. (Part 2/2) Happy World Turtle Day! 🌎🐢 We love our Pringle Nature Center turtles, so we decided to “shellebrate” by holding a pageant! Each turtle was ranked in six categories: talent, beauty, poise, athleticism, interview, and probability of biting you. The judges have deliberated, and the results are in. See part 1 on our previous post for the first two turtle contestants! 🐢 Clementine, the common snapping turtle, was also a pet before coming to live at PNC. He enjoys shrimp, snapping at his caretakers, and sitting so still that visitors ask "...is he ok?" Snappers can be found in wetlands throughout our area, and can stretch their necks out to the same length as their shell, so keep your hands away! Talent: 8/10 dismantles his tank filter in seconds flat! Beauty: 7/10 has a bad case of resting dinosaur face Poise: 5/10 can't seem to take a good photo Athleticism: 2/10 more interested in sun bathing Interview: 6/10 not a conversationalist, but is a great listener Probability of biting you: 11/10 will try it every time What a shock, it’s a tie! 🥳 I guess all of our turtles are equally amazing. ✨🐢✨ Come see them in person the next time you visit Pringle Nature Center. Speaking of turtles, did you know that they are the most-surrendered animal? Turtles can make great pets, but they are long-lived, can grow to be quite large, and have extensive care requirements. When owners are not educated on proper care prior to adoption, bad situations may arise. Thankfully, people who can no longer care for their pet turtle can contact a rescue organization, rather than release it into the wild where it may perish or become invasive. Each turtle was ranked in six categories: talent, beauty, poise, athleticism, interview, and probability of biting you. The judges have deliberated, and the results are in: 🐢 Lily, the red-eared slider (photos 1-3), came to PNC after her previous owner could no longer care for her. She loves showing off for visitors and digging up her tank plants. Red-eared sliders are not native to WI, but have become more common from being released into the wild. They are related to painted turtles and are strong swimmers. Talent: 7/10 if escaping her tank and horking down food count, then she is a double-threat Beauty: 10/10 interesting stripes, great sense of style! Poise: 4/10 we once saw her trip and get stuck on her back, it was embarrassing Athleticism: 9/10 strong runner, stronger swimmer! Interview: 6/10 kind of an attention hog, only wants to discuss her next meal Probability of biting you: 3/10 gets over-eager at feeding time, might accidentally give you a “love nip” 🐢 "Marsh" Marshall, the Eastern box turtle (photos 4-6), is the youngest PNC turtle and was adopted from J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue. He is our “shy guy” and spends his time hiding in his caves or chomping bugs. Eastern box turtles are native to our area and eat plants and small animals. They spend most of their time on land as they are not strong swimmers, so please do not throw them in the water if you see them! We move to an International Mail Facility in Torrence, California. On March 10, 2024, Wildlife Inspectors spotted four packages labeled Almonds and Chocolate Cookies. Three of the packages contained 8 Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) hidden inside black socks. A fourth package contained seven live turtles and one deceased turtle. The address on these packages lead to a fake name in Hong Kong. The name "Ji Yearlong" was a bogus pseudonym for Sai Keung Tin (53) AKA "Ricky Tin". They arrested this Perp on February 25, 2024. An Affidavit in the Criminal Complaint of February 26, 2024 said that Tin was trafficking turtles for Kang JunTao 康君桃in Hang Zhou City 杭州市. The Chinese eat turtles and crush the shells for local witchcraft medicine. From June 2017 to December 2028 Kang moved $2.25 million worth of 1,500 turtles. Police in Malaysia extradited Kang to China where they arrested him on Money Laundering. It’s #terrapenetuesday and for this edition we’ve got a really good looking subadult Eastern box turtle located on an overcast day a couple weeks ago. I really enjoy the burnt orange color this one exhibited, and hope to see how its patterning develops as it puts on size. This turtle had already emerged from the leaf litter when I walked up on it mid-morning. It was found utilizing downed woody debris and some beech regen for vertical cover. In fact, box turtles can travel up to 55 yards outside of their home range in just one day. What bravery! Oh, how romantic! How can you help them along their journey? Keep an eye out while driving for turtles crossing busy roads. While helping a turtle cross, and keeping your own safety in mind, place the turtle on the side of the road in the direction they were already crossing. I love that little boy and his big heart! 🐢 It’s turtle season! One of the most common turtles you’ll see is the eastern box turtle. Their colorful shell marked with yellow and orange streaks and blotches ranges from 4 ½ to 6 inches long. The rest of its body may also have bright markings. Box turtles have a sharp, horned beak. Perhaps the coolest feature of the eastern box turtle is the hinged door on their shell that allows them to box themselves in (get it… box turtle, box itself in? 🤭) for protection against predators. When disturbed or frightened, they will pull their head and legs in, and tightly close the shell. The shell is almost impossible to pry open when closed. When you see an eastern box turtle wandering around, give it space. Even if it’s trying to cross the road, the best approach could be to just stand guard as it crosses on its own. If you do move it, please don’t pick it up by the tail. Make sure to move it in the same direction it was already going.
