Otariids appeared about 15-17 million years ago during the late Miocene epoch, initially being terrestrial mammals, but they quickly adapted to the marine environment. They are believed to descend from a common ancestor closely related to present-day bears. The subfamily Arctocephalinae of fur seals specifically refers to "bear-headed". On the other hand, seals are believed to descend from a terrestrial mustelid-like ancestor. The oldest fossils of fur seals date back to the late Miocene, approximately 10-7 million years ago, and were found in the North Pacific region. Fur seals are a relatively recent addition to mammals. About 3-2 million years ago, during the late Pliocene, fur seals moved to the southern hemisphere, where the species diversified rapidly, evolving into nine different species. Eight species belong to the Arctocephalus genus and are mostly found in the Southern Hemisphere. The ninth species is sometimes called a fur seal, although it belongs to a different species, Callorhinus ursinus, and inhabits the North Pacific. The fur seals of the genus Arctocephalus are more closely related to sea lions than to northern fur seals. The Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) is a common seal species in the waters of Tasmania, and they are also found in the Bass Strait and the southern Victorian islands as well as the islands of South Australia and New South Wales. Australian fur seals are genetically identical to Cape/South African fur seals, and they are believed to have arrived in Australia around 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. Pinnipeds, or fin-footed animals (Pinnipedia), are divided into two subfamilies: true seals (Phocidae) and otariids, which include eared seals or fur seals (Otariidae) and walruses (Odobenidae). Anatomical differences distinguish true seals from fur seals and sea lions. These differences include the structure of the ears and the function of the hind flippers. True seals are called "earless," whereas fur seals and sea lions have visible ear flaps. Regarding the hind flippers, the hind flippers of true seals cannot be turned forward, whereas those of fur seals and sea lions are longer and can move by turning towards the front of the body. Due to these differences, their way of moving on land differs; seals use thrusting movements forward, while sea lions use their hind limbs to walk. Day 2 in Tasmania! This was a special day. These flowers were for a special lad. William Swallow is buried on the Isle of the Dead in an unmarked grave. It was a privilege to be able to leave him these flowers. I hope he likes them. We toured a misty Port Arthur, where he spent the last 4 years of his life. Then the sun came out and gave us the most spectacular, private beach experience in Pirate's Bay (where William committed his first act of piracy 🏴☠️) No waves. Perfectly clear turquoise water. I just floated and floated in the shadow of these mountains.
