Big congratulations to our Youth Community Ambassadors, Anastasia Kapranos and Oscar Montogomery, and the class of 2024! We have had the pleasure of watching you grow up right in front of our eyes. From the days in the Kidventure summer camp, now soon heading off to college and all the things in between. You are both rock stars and true community champions! Part of our mission as an organization is to engage the Youth in our community and when we decided to put this program together, Oscar and Tasi jumped at the opportunity to get involved and be that youth voice that we actively seek out to be part of the community conversations. Although they are moving on to college soon, their work is ongoing with Downtown Wytheville. We will be announcing their student project early next week and they will both be assisting us with the July 4th Celebration and Street Festival as well as helping us select the next round of ambassadors. ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT: Over the next few days, we will highlight many of the artists who will be playing at the July 4th Celebration and Street Festival this year. Kicking off the event from the Food City Main Stage will be Martha Spencer and the Wonderland Country Band. Martha Spencer is a singer-songwriter, mountain musician, and dancer from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. She grew up in the musical Spencer family and learned to play several instruments (guitar, fiddle, banjo, bass, dulcimer, mandolin) and flatfoot/clog at a young age. She performs and has recorded with various groups and has been involved with several roots music projects. She has played shows, festivals, and led workshops across the US, Australia, UK, Canada, and Europe. Martha’s first solo album in 2018 and latest release “Wonderland” in 2022 have been featured in articles in Rolling Stone Country, No Depression, Holler, Wide Open Country, Bluegrass Situation, Americana Highways, Pop Matters and more. She also has been included in articles in the NY Times, Austin Chronicle and Billboard and was a part of the Fiddlin’ documentary. It’s a special weekend in Downtown Wytheville as it starts to feel like summer with warmer weather and even more things to do downtown. If you’re looking for some live music, you can find Nate Montgomery & Friends, Chad Cox, Chase Altizer, Jaden Uniek & The Outlaw Coalition, The Untrained Professionals, and Jim Lloyd at Seven Sisters Brewery, 7 Dogs Brewpub, and Petals Wine Bar. Friday night, make sure to come out for the Wytheville-Wythe-Bland Chamber of Commerce’s annual Community Connections Day featuring over 50 booths representing local businesses, non-profits, artisans, and more along Main Street’s Sidewalks giving members of the community a great way to get involved and find out more about their hometown. This event will also have live music, a Chick-fil-A Food Truck, our Downtown Wytheville Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area License, and much more. After Community Connections Day, join the Chamber of Commerce and grab a ticket to see the Silk Groove Revue at the Millwald Theatre. Saturday morning, join the Wytheville Farmers Market for their Summer Season Opening featuring seed plantings, vendors, live music, children’s activities, and more. You can also join the Wytheville Department of Museums for historic baseball games at the Homestead on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Besides these great activities, you’ll find game nights, craft workshops, trivia nights, jam sessions, and much more throughout the weekend and weeknights. While visiting any of these fantastic community events, remember to make your visit an event by grabbing something to eat or drink from a downtown restaurant, including our newest restaurant O’ Taste & See Kitchen, then browse the many retail shops downtown including some of our newest like C&K Designs and the Flower Girl Boutique.
