HOPEDATE (and #throwbackthursday ) This photo is from our first ever walk together, two months ago, the day we took Hope home. Since then she’s growing into this beautiful confident dog that loves a cuddle and her treats. It hasn’t been smooth sailing, Hope reactivity to everything new is still a work in progress plus her getting overwhelmed in some environments. We are now muzzle training her to keep her safe 🩵 Her skin is improving every day, new furr sprouting all over her body. We FINALLY settled her tummy and we are in the process of slowly switching her to her @ardengrangeuk dry food. My beautiful Ivy……… 🥰 Most of you have met Ivy now, however, to all my new customers meet my little poodle Ivy. The crazy little mite that should of been born a terrier 😂 This week is a quiet week here at smart paws, which means some of my dog’s are getting a well over due tidy up. Being my competition dog Ivy usually has weekly maintenance baths however, in this case she hasn’t had a bath since I opened smart paws 😱 Ivy’s coat is growing back out after being spay back in March! We also have an amazing 1-2-1 training day booked with an award winning Asian fusion groomer Holly Mills. Chunk……..💙 Oops bad dog groomer mum alert ‼️ This is actually one of my dogs teeth (it pains me to say) Being a dog groomer people think my dogs are immaculate all the time well……. I hate to say it but there not! 😂 infact they get put to the bottom of the list. Today’s victim was my chunky boy, who’s teeth where in some serious need of sorting out. Chunk is one of our working gun dogs, this being said it’s safe to say he carry’s a lot of bacteria and germs in his mouth on a regular basis. Deffo Won't Look Wednesday 😆 I wanted to talk about doggos and muzzles cos it needs talking about! Marv wears a muzzle, but what does it mean? 🐶 Does a muzzle conjure images of an angry, aggressive dog? Our concept of muzzles is often informed by the media and as a result they aren't always seen as useful training tools. I want to dispel any myths and explore the truth as to why muzzles are often used. 🐶 Marv wears his because he doesn’t like unknown dogs getting too close in his space. This way he and they can be safe. 🐶 Common misconceptions: Muzzles are only used to stop a dog from biting - they are a useful preventative tool to stop them from engaging in dangerous behaviour, but this doesn't necessarily mean biting. They are a useful tool to stop dogs who like to eat anything and everything on walks, including poo! 🐶 A dog wearing a muzzle has bitten before - if a dog is wearing a muzzle it doesn't mean they have bitten previously. If a dog is nervous it is better that they are kept out of situations that cause them anxiety, but a muzzle can be useful in keeping other dogs safe in the event they are suddenly frightened. 🐶 Muzzles are cruel - when used properly a muzzle should never cause pain or discomfort. Positive reinforcement training will get your dog used to wearing a muzzle, and they are easily able to pant, drink water and accept treats. 🐶 My dog doesn't need to wear a muzzle - not only does a muzzle prevent eating unsavoury things(!), or preventative biting, it is also useful for a trip to the vets or even after surgery to stop aggravating a healing wound or stitches. 🐶 So the next time you see a muzzled dog on your walk, consider why they might be wearing it.
