Samantha and Darrin’s wedding anniversary is considered to be September 17, 1964, the day the first episode aired. But have you ever wondered what day their infamous revolving door meeting occurred? I have re-discovered a plausible answer. In 1965 Dell Publishing released a “Bewitched” novelization by Al Hine based on the first seven episodes. On the first page Mr. Hine retells the story of their first meeting and places it occurring on May 19th at 12:12 PM! But he also gives Samantha a very mortal sounding last name - Dobson. Here’s the first few paragraphs of the book, which appears often for sale on eBay. “SAMANTHA DOBSON MET DARRIN STEPHENS IN A REVOLVING door in the Templar Building, which housed the offices of McMann & Tate, Advertising, wherein Darrin toiled as most promising junior executive. Revolving doors are constructed invariably to revolve in a conventional clockwise direction. For reasons concerned with her early childhood and peculiar juvenile games-among them dancing widdershins (or counterclockwise) around the summer solstice fires—Samantha invariably had trouble with revolving doors, and the chrome and glass pride of the Templar Building was no exception. Dashing out from the Boutique Exotique in the lobby to keep a luncheon date with her mother, Samantha sallied into the same pie-wedge of door occupied by Darrin. She began immediately to push in the wrong direction as Darrin exerted his manly strength on the opposite panel. “Damn and Hecate!” Samantha cried in girlish embarrassment and wheeled to readjust herself. Darrin, gentlemanly, had also wheeled to see what was happening behind him. And so it was that they fell into each other’s arms at twelve minutes after noon on May 19, Saint Celestine’s Day. France was one of the few countries where the show had special opening credits in the local language, changing the famous Bewitched logo to “Ma Sorcière Bien-Aimée”. The show debuted in France in July 1966, when it had already been a huge hit in the US for almost 2 years. There were other adaptations beyond the opening credits to make the show more relatable to the French audience. Darrin Stephens, for example, was renamed Jean-Pierre Stephens. Jean-Pierre’s boss, Larry Tate, became Alfred Tate, and the Kravitzes were renamed Charlotte (Gladys) and Albert (Abner). The French audience followed the Stephens’ saga dubbed, as you can see in this post, and “Ma Sorcière Bien Aimée” means something like “My Beloved Witch.” Charming, isn’t it? Some rare behind-the-scenes images show Dick York in front of a chroma-key (the blue background) while filming S05E01 “Samantha’s Wedding Present,” originally aired on September 26th, 1968. The special effects department faced significant challenges working on this episode because all the effects in Bewitched were created before the computer era. The technique used here was purely chemical to exclude the blue background of the film. Fifty-five years ago tonight (4/24/69) ABC aired the Fifth Season finale, Episode #170: “Samantha and Darrin in Mexico City.” Excerpt from THE BEWITCHED HISTORY BOOK (available at the link in my bio): “I really like this episode and would give it at least three stars. I love that Samantha finally gives Larry a kick in the pants for being so greedy and money grubbing. It seems that scene with her floating in the air at the meeting was always cut short in airings, maybe because Larry calls Mexico a backward country and calls them sleepy, which I thought was a strange thing for them to be offended about. I wonder if the line was originally “lazy” but they thought that might be going too far. Anyway, I LOVE seeing Samantha in her flying suit and Liz looked very gorgeous. “I also love it when Samantha pops out the first time from coming to ask Endora what she’s done and she says, “Mother. You make a mockery of the word “mother”!” And then she gets that mean look on her face and pops out. “Sigh. Which brings us to the end of Dick York’s five season tenure on ‘Bewitched.’ At the end of January it was announced that he would not be returning to ‘Bewitched.’ After having missed fourteen episodes for various reasons, he was let go or decided to quit depending on whose story you believe. And think about how hard it was on everyone on the cast and crew to have one of the main stars miss that many days of work. It had to be done. But the 156 episodes he was in are truly brilliant and Dick York will ALWAYS be Durwood, no, DARRIN in my book. When fans are asked about their favorite episodes from Bewitched, many of them mention S05E12, “Weep No More My Willow”. In this episode, Samantha calls Doctor Bombay to treat her sick willow tree but ends up getting caught in the spell. She starts weeping every time the wind blows. To reverse the spell, she begins to laugh uncontrollably until she is cured. Although the plot of the episode may not be the most creative, it stands out because of the great performances by the cast. We particularly enjoy Elizabeth’s acting when she does Samantha’s loud crying. However, the episode becomes especially hilarious when the spell is reversed, and Samantha can’t control her own laughter. This creates a contagious laughter effect, especially when we see David White with tears in his eyes while shooting a laughing scene with Dick York and Liz Montgomery. The title, “Weep No More My Willow”, comes from a line in Stephen Foster’s anti-slavery ballad, ‘The Old Kentucky Home’, published in January 1853: “Weep no more my lady, oh! weep no more today!”. Lizzie’s costume looks particularly adorable in this episode. Fifty-six years ago tonight (4/4/68) ABC aired Episode #135: “I Confess”. Excerpt from THE BEWITCHED HISTORY BOOK (available at the link in my bio): “...Flabbergasted, Larry tries to believe that maybe the mirrors were up her sleeve but Samantha changes them into two full length mirrors which he weakly tries to rationalize as the smaller ones being expandable. She zaps them away and Larry tries to gather his thoughts which end up being that with his brains and her voodoo they could take over the world, a dream Larry has had since he was a kid. Darrin and Samantha refuse to use her powers in such a manner and Larry promptly fires Darrin… I interrupt this episode at a place where an actual interruption may have occurred that night when ABC news announced that the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had been killed in Memphis, Tennessee earlier that evening. Of course, Martin Luther King Jr. was, and is, considered the greatest leader of the Civil Rights Movement. America had been boiling over with high tensions with race riots for many years before now, but things really came to a boiling point with the murder of Dr. King. Most of the country would’ve turned to CBS to the beloved and trusted Walter Cronkite for information about this horrible circumstance. When I chose it I had forgot that it was a comic book cover. Eighteen years ago today (3/21/06) Sony released Season Three on DVD. This was the first time all 32 episodes were available in crystal clear visual and audio. Too bad there were so many little stupid edits like the ball of light when Samantha zaps up Benjamin Franklin’s tankard of ale being edited out in “My Friend Ben”. And at the end of the episode they blank out the freeze frame on Samantha’s face that has the words “Next Week” under it. And that whole episode’s recap on “Samantha for the Defense” is entirely missing. We recently conducted a quiz to find out which Bewitched episode is your favorite. Many of you said that it’s the pilot episode, so let’s start with it! The pilot episode of Bewitched was first aired on September 17th, 1964 on the ABC Network. It introduced us to our beloved characters, Samantha played by Elizabeth Montgomery, Darrin played by Dick York, and Endora played by Agnes Moorehead. The episode also gave us a glimpse of Endora’s acid personality as the witch mother-in-law. Also called as “I, Darrin, Take This, Witch Samantha”, in this episode, the real villain is not a witch but a mortal. Darrin’s ex-girlfriend, Sheila played by Nancy Kovack, causes trouble for Samantha at a dinner party. However, Samantha uses her magical abilities to turn things around in a memorable scene. The cast worked so well together that the pilot episode felt like a well-established show instead of a new one. The 1st season was so popular with the audience that it was repeated on ABC on December 31, 1964 to celebrate New Year’s Eve. During the episode shooting, Elizabeth was pregnant, so the crew had to be careful to conceal it in Samantha’s scenes. The episode was produced and directed by William Asher, who was Elizabeth’s real-life husband during the Bewitched years. He was a respected director in show business and is well-known for directing the classic I Love Lucy. Due to his pioneering work, he was called “the man who invented the sitcom” in the US. Before its premiere, some people protested against Bewitched, thinking that it would promote devil worship. But Samantha’s character proved to be an adorable witch, and the pilot episode was just the beginning of the show’s huge success.
